Re: Housekeeping

Started to pull lower radiator hose to remove thermostat. Have made a second radiator cap to be lower pressure to allow bubbles to escape to keep internal pressure down into espansion tank.

At the top of each head is a combining tube that brings both coolant exits to the radiator of which I am looking to see if it can tell which side the problem is at if I can make something to bolt to them as well.

The new gaskets are designed with more layers and of a different material.

I have used high temp rtv to solve warped heads in the past as the problem could be on the block surface that are never planed.

The water pump, timing belt and radiator are all new...

SOHC 2.5L 4-cylinder head gaskets came from the factory with a single layer steel HG with a coating that deteriorates over time. This causes external oil and coolant leaks. Every last SOHC 2.5 we have seen has this issue, even the brand new ones.

Re: Housekeeping

Block warpage requiring planing is more a problem with aluminum blocks than iron,  but still fairly rare even with aluminum.  Usually by the time an overheat problem has warped the block,  you have incurred other damage,  too.

Head gaskets are often made of different materials,  usually multi-layered.  The differences are unimportant,  all these seem to be good gasket designs.  Using dabs of silicone to hold the head gasket in place during assembly is fine.  Counting on such to help the gasket stay sealed if the block is warped is not OK.  It will only hold for days to weeks max,  if that long.

Glad to see you have a radiator in your list of new parts.  I just ran into a mostly-clogged radiator on a small farm tractor.  The flow through the core is too low to support running the shredder in the warm months when I need it,  which makes the engine run at much higher power levels than just motoring around.

The symptoms are water temperature increasing without limit to boilover while shredding,  yet staying at a controlled level while just motoring around.  I removed the thermostat and the behavior persisted,  which confirmed the diagnosis.  Must remove and clean that radiator,  if possible.  Just been too lazy to go and do it,  yet. My excuse is that I'm getting too old to do as much anymore.

Re: Housekeeping

Todays experimentation was to reduce radiator cap pressure and to remove thermostat to do short refill and drive use to monitor temp rise to heating dropping out. Also was noted engine rpm as well as heating for conditions as to or if flow was stopping as fluid level in coolant system dropped.

When heat dropped during run was when it was below 1500 rpm but would comeback when it was above 2500 rpm with total distanced covered round trip being 10 miles with temperature still below thermostat opening temperature if it were installed.

Will be adding cooant leak product tomorrow while early in the day, placing normal radiator cap on once at operating temp just prior to turning vehicle off after circulating. This should while hot and under pressure force the sealant into the gap to fix the issue temporarily. Of course retest after cooling with the low pressure cap installed after cool down.

This plus putting in a ph conditioner are usually tried before doing the head gasket work. It is a known problem that its the cooling system ph that is damaging the original gaskets.

update

this is where i am as well with idle rpm under 1,000

the heater will blow cold but raise the rpm to 1,200 and it gets warm which indicates lower fluid or flow rate or pump head pressure...

Re: Housekeeping

Update on vehicle as I have been able to monitor conditions of idle and heat control such as to be able to work. The coolant head gasket sealing product did not full seal the leaking seam but was pretty close. Possibly another filling of the product will finish the job to make that seal more permanent such as to not need an engine or head work in the short term future.

A business opportunity of a none gas powered vehicle has been in the background under the quadricycle recumbent topic with pedal powered power generation to be stored in batteries to propel the vehicle in electric mode. This is also part of that mars mobility as well of which we have within the My Hacienda.

The Business opportunity power charging system for earth could also be part of the my Hacienda topic project as well for mars...

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

By any chance, can you find the post by RobertDyck where he shows his recommendation for an atmosphere for a Mars habitat, and for his space vessel?

I thought I had set tags for that, but apparently not.

The detail I am looking for is the pressure he decided was optimum to allow humans to live comfortably in the habitat, and then put on Mars suits without having to spend time pre-breathing.

The one detail I remember is that the oxygen level was set to meet human requirements.  My recollection is that Mars trace gases were then added until the pressure was right to achieve the desired flexibility.

I'd like to record a link to that post in the lead post of the new Fire / Mars shelter topic.

Thanks!

Re: Housekeeping

There has been a couple of mars air mixes, pressure levels and where they might be used over the years but hopefully I can find them...

GW's take on a partial air pressure

found my co2 scrubber

RobertDyck exhale content also my post just before this one also has content

RobertDyck with a post on gas mix with GW following it up in post 186

A good portion of this topic Habitat air starts with RobertDyck posting

This one starts with Bryon for Optimal air pressures.. - Which is best? More O2 or more pressure?

Thanks for taking the time to do that research!

RobertDyck's post (http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 20#p117720) was a good example, and I'll check the other links as well.

What I was looking for was his study of the optimum hab pressure to allow for transfer to a Mars suit with no waiting time.

For SpaceNut .... I went back to look at the beginning of clark's time with the forum.

I came away with the impression that he has always taken a negative position on just about every topic, and early on he even admitted his pessimistic leanings.

However, his recent set of posts suggests to me he may be experiencing challenges which impact the quality of his presentation.

Please take a look at his recent posts to see if they are the kind of material you want to have in a family oriented forum

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re possible new topic ....

First, I'd like to ask how your attention to the "new" (2008) Suburu has held up.  At the last report, (as I recall) you were on the road but with a watchful eye.

Second, I'd like to point out that your experience might be seen as illustrative of what life could be like for Mars settlement pioneers.  The ordinary (on Earth) expectation is that everyone is isolated when problems occur, and they have to solve them without help.

I've over simplified the statement above, in an attempt to set the stage for the concept I'd like to introduce.

In planning for Mars settlement, we have a model to go by for how humans on location might be supported.

For the ISS, each human is supported by a small army of people in various agencies and organizations on Earth.  That goes for every nationality, and even the ones who don't have national space programs.

The Mars environment is remarkably similar (from the standpoint of communications) to this forum.  24 hour turnaround is quite common in this forum, although there are occasional rapid turnaround events, and there are occasional delays of days or even weeks.

In the Mars support concept I am imagining, each onsite worker could be supported by a network of family and friends, and by professionals who are paid to support the onsite team, much as the robot explorers are supported by paid staff in today's situation.

The person who is on site is going to need to be handy with tools, as you have demonstrated, and the support group can help by offering advice or specific data that might be helpful.

Accordingly, I'm hoping this post will stimulate one or two forum readers to start thinking about the human support network that might be set in place for each on site worker.

Re: Housekeeping

Still watchful eye as when its in stop and go traffic the temperature will rise rapidly as the low 600 rpm does not make the coolant circulate through the engine properly. The tell is the heat coming from the heater is absent but if you bring that rpm up to 1200 rpm minimum you will get heat. Monitoring the heat and temperature guage allows the vehicles use. I still need to wire in some sort of indicators to see if the cooling fans ever come on under normal use. They do work as pushing the AC switch allows for them to phase on and off even when the vehicle is first started but at a reduced rpm.

How about one of you guys actually post something tangentially related to Mars?

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re new StraitsResearch posts about collaborative robots

I think the posts that are currently in New Mars Articles could be moved to the new Business Opportunity section ...

This is spam of course, but it has potential to fit into the scope of what I think NewMars forum is about.

The posts are obviously not a good fit for New Mars Articles.

I'm also hesitant to click on the link to StraitsResearch.com, because it could be a trap for unwary Internet users.

If someone has a system fully up to date with every available hacker protection, it might be interesting to find out what waits at the end of the link.

Edit#1 ... I decided to see if Google could act as a line blocker, and found that Straits Research is running what looks like a legitimate web site.

The company claims to have phone numbers in the US and in the UK.

OK ... this spam appears to have been placed by someone working for the company.

Re: Housekeeping

For Oldfart1939 re #290

Your advice is going to SpaceNut (hopefully)

However, I would ask for the people from India to be given a chance to redeem themselves.

They haven't done anything illegal, and they appear to be representing a legitimate enterprise.

The message they posted just ** happens ** to be one that I completely and enthusiastically agree with.

SpaceNut is going to be making the final call on this, but if he should decide to let them stay until we (I) can find out if they are interested in a serious discussion of cobot technology (especially as it would apply to Mars (which it most definitely would)), they might turn out to be a valuable addition to the forum.

Obviously, the ** sales ** person would not be the representative we would want, so it remains to be seen if a member of the engineering staff would be interested in participating in the forum.

Re: Housekeeping

Such a waste of time to spam the website. This one would have gotten a pass on one of my 4 checks for new user accounts...
But its all cleaned up now.
Have started to ban more often new accounts based on the checks leaving what appears to be real....
This does up the work for each nightly session as once the new ones are taken care of its time to go back through the no post 30 day usernames that have not posted to close.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #295 and another idea to try to help with the problem

First, thanks for cleaning up the debris field from RatFink or whatever it's name was!

Second, thanks for taking the time to work on the spammers early instead of waiting.

Now I'd like to offer a suggestion .... Some time ago I set up NewMarsMember in order to be able to communicate via email without revealing my own email.

You and the moderators (of course) know everyone's email.

It would be possible to set up an email address (on gmail or wherever you would prefer) that would be a receiving station for applications for admission to the forum.  This email can be set up in the email configuration of each of the moderators/administrators, and (as I am imagining it) the application for admission would be transmitted to the application email account by FluxBB (I'm assuming that capability exists - would have to check to be sure).

It is ** highly ** unlikely any of the spammers would go to the trouble of sending an email to ask for admission.

What we ** do ** want is a smoothly functioning way for people we NEED in this forum to be able to apply and receive approval swiftly.

Examples would be people with the education, experience and available tools to help RobertDyck with his space ship undertaking.  I want that project to move forward with all deliberate speed.  It is worthy of the Mars Society, and worthy of support.

Other examples are Calliban's visions for (a) asteroid capture in webbing and (b) a design for modest sized fission reactor to be deployed on Mars.

There are probably lots of other ideas that have been given a first light opportunity on this forum, and which never amounted to anything because the critical mass of educated, motivated and generous people is not present.

Re: Housekeeping

There is now an interesting treat for you to observe...

The current email filter to the webmaster and I do not think the process for selective user is enabled as the would be the server admin that needs to make that change. It was enabled back during the period of 2005 through 2008  but it was a full time job for the admins at that time to go through all of the new applications.

Forums have always had this problem for giving all the chance to become members. This lead to a number of them being corrupted to the point of a crash as I was a member on many that did and some never did restart.

Re: Housekeeping

Is it time to revisit that?

It should be possible to modify the behavior of FluxBB to send the registration request to someone other than the Webmaster.

*** And *** !!! *** it should be possible to require an actual email application to be filled out by the applicant.

What I think you are describing is a system that sent a notice to the Webmaster when someone applied for membership without any prior vetting.

What I am talking about here is a vetting process that could be farmed out to willing volunteers.

We would ** not ** want to be looking at applications from spammers.

For SpaceNut ... it's a small world ... In today's paper, I caught the home maintenance column as usual ...

On this occasion, the writer mentioned he lives in New Hampshire ... I realize New Hampshire is a good sized state, so you very well may not have heard of him ... the column is titled:

Special epoxy a good match for patch in driveway

You should be able to find it, but when I ran a search using that string I got some replies not related to this particular writer.
