Sol 283 is Wednesday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in January on Earth.

For current weather on Mars at Insight location, see:

All forum members are invited to post significant events for this day.
Events of interest will be ON Mars, or relate to Mars. Examples are launches, landings, discoveries

The topic My Hacienda is set up to encourage up to 2750 forum members to build a virtual community.
Each participant "claims" a square kilometer of surface, and shares below surface with the community.
Each Hacienda is a participant in the economy of a thriving interdependent free market.
Each Hacienda provides at least one product or service, and multiple products or services are welcome.

As of this Sol, the number of plots established in Sagan City (2018) is: > 1 (inventory pending) [Thanks to everyone who registered!]

Recruiting Announcement: People are needed to participate in the Sagan City (2018) Virtual Community

The concept is to imagine life on Mars at the level of current 1st Tier civilization on Earth.  This community is assumed well past startup phases.

The objective is to gain a clear understanding of the operation of market forces in a community of 2750 plots.  Community members have needs.

The market is there to meet those needs.  The first step is to identify the needs.

I'd like to thank the members of the Mars Society whose financial support allows the NewMars forum database to flourish.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

When people live on Mars do you think they will measure their lives and their age in Earth years or Mars years? Aresians might like cutting their age in half! But of course it would be confusing for anyone who travels between the two planets. But trying to retain Earth years and calculate your birthday by the Earth calendar would be confusing.

I guess that your Smartphone or equivalent will be able to do a calculation.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

That makes for a duel time clock time piece not all unfimilair for those that travel across multiple time zones often.

Being able to align ones thoughts to those that are still on earth will take some effort but most likely will fade with time and many years from now.

Things like the reason for celebrating Martin Luther King day to will fade as we become a one world nation of humans...

What are your plans for your day "on" Monday January 20th? Congress passed the King Holiday and Service act to be celevrated on the third Monday in January not only as a Federal Holiday but as National Day of Service to be a Day on, not a Day off. Volunteering is a wonderful way to honor the legacy of the Rev. King by giving back to community. It is a moment in time for promoting peaceful social change and enduring equality. His vision was one of an endevour to realize the dream united in inclusion. The inclusion is a chance to eliminate barriers of biases and to create an environment where we strive to reach the visions goal.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For Louis re #461

Thank you for noting this situation for future humans to consider.

I have only one data point to offer from the Science Fiction genre ... Only one story I've read included this as a factor in the story, albeit a minor one. That particular author went with the idea that a year on any body where humans live will mark age.

There ** is ** a universal time value derivable from the vibration rate of atoms.

As has been discussed at great length in the forum archives, the "second" is NOT a universal interval of time.

I think the consensus of how this will be dealt with for legal purposes is very much in the future.

There are multiple Star Trek sites (of course).  I found one which had assembled a list of birthday mentions in the series (all versions).

With one exception (an alien) it appears all birthdays (and accounting of years) was done based upon the Earth standard year.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

I can understand that if you are a Star Trekker popping back to Earth for shore leave, but if you are a Mars-born Aresian, working to a 24 month Mars Year calendar and having no connections with Earth other than maybe visiting it once for a vacation (which you didn't much enjoy), I can't really see the imperative to continue with the old years. But, it is one of our most embedded cultural artefacts - Earth year age - so, on the other hand, I can see it might be difficult to dislodge.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

I guess your Smartphone or future equivalent can give you both ages.  People living in countries with both Catholics and Orthodox adherents get used to Christmas occurring twice...maybe I'm making too big a thing of it. We'll be aged both 55 and 24 or whatever at the same time.  In the UK we cope with both celsius and farenheit, both the 24 hour and 12 hour clock and both metric and Imperial measures, so it's not so difficult to maintain two scales in the head.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Pondering the weather on Mars does bring us closer to the planet.  The highest temperature over the last week was -12 celsius.  I've probably experienced -8 celsius so probably not that far off from being to survive the temperature! I am sure some of our North American contributors have experienced a lot worse than -12.
