Best Practices for Mars Settlers

The NewMars forum contains a great number of discussions of how best to carry out activities on Mars.  These discussions often contain insights offered by knowledgeable persons whose words would be helpful for anyone planning an expedition to Mars, or anyone planning a permanent settlement there.

It is hoped that this will be a moderately self-curated topic, which will allow for efficient discovery of needed information about specific problems.

Opinion and wild speculation are encouraged in the NewMars forum in general, but this topic is reserved for the outcome of rigorous review in other topics.

Posts set here should be seen as valuable guides to those who are currently planning education and career paths which will lead toward establishing successful business enterprise on Mars or otherwise away from Earth.

Furthermore, it is intended that the posts set in this topic will be updated as new information arrives.  All posts in the forum can be edited by their creators, and all posts can be edited by the Administrator, who can be counted upon to use good judgement when making changes.

This may be a good time to enlist Arthur C. Clarke as guidance for the new topic:

Arthur C Clarke's three laws of forecasting: When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. ... Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

What it will take for humans to colonize the Moon and Mars

“We had indications that H2O – the familiar water we know – might be present on the sunlit side of the Moon,” Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, said at the time. “Now we know it is there. This discovery challenges our understanding of the lunar surface and raises intriguing questions about resources relevant for deep space exploration.”

Based on this new evidence, Mueller estimates that there should be enough water ice available to “launch a vehicle like the space shuttle every day for 2,000 years. So there's a lot of water on the moon. The trick is, is we have to find it, access it, and mine it, and then economically use it.”

Re: Best Practices for Mars Settlers

A great deal is in the exact planning of the missions not just how many people are for the crew:
1. start of launch, landing with knowledge of duration of stay, for a prepared site with lots of equipment and other cargo
2. whether any stay after mars launch window for return to earth is desired from insitu refueling, done with a resupply ship cargo of fuel
3. mission goals while on mars exploration, samples, or building,
4. life support of power, co2/ oxygen regenerative, building and expanding the power levels
5. food support through dried goods, greenhouse and what needs to be used for a return flight,
6. Building of shelter/ protection, expanding man's hold on mars in all forms to excess.
7.

list can continue due to what ifs, redundancy and change of mission plans.
