#2426 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Important Discovery! » 2007-12-20 15:18:37

as an honest question, has anyone at newmars ever given you a positive response to one of your "discoveries"?

#2427 Re: Interplanetary transportation » New Fuel » 2007-12-19 15:48:17

New (new [new] ) Fuel

Hydrazine and N2O/ NO / NO2
should be decent isp.  Reaction as follows:

N2H4 + 2N2O => 2N2 + 2H2O
What do you think?

#2428 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Important Discovery! » 2007-12-19 14:45:57

does this image editing yeild similar results to this image?

30155_S0801258_pc_oln_2.jpg

if it is, it's your usual silliness.

#2429 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Important Discovery! » 2007-12-18 14:53:40

I do not have that.  I would prefer if you put it up here.  As is, or as any other way, THERE IS NOTHING THERE.  It's very simple.  MARS IS DEAD.(or abiotic, whichever you prefer)

Actually, there might be a few hardy microbes, but nothing more.

#2430 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Polywell Fusion » 2007-12-17 14:58:17

This seems to be a major breakthrough in fusion.  Imagine fusion NTR.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only/biggest problem in fusion right now (and for the last 50 years or so) has been containment, right?

#2431 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » 3 ideas. » 2007-12-16 19:24:22

Oh, OK so no go on TTP.

What about NIXRS (I even gave it a scientific acronym lol ) and the calendar?

#2432 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » 3 ideas. » 2007-12-16 16:56:21

Thanks about the tamplate, it seemed like a good way to follow the (unofficial) "not another bland wikipedia ripoff" slogan.

On the topic of templates, I  think there should definitely be a CERTIFIED BY AN EXPERT template.  It would be put on pages by an expert in a subject, to say that everything on that page is correct.

And Maybe as an addition to the front page, maybe a picture w/the unofficial slogan on it (for decoration)

TTP doesn't have thermite as a fuel, it is used to heat the fuel (usually Hydrogen, I suppose) as opposed to a nuclear reactor.  So I guess you could say that it's nuclear thermal, only without the nuclear.

#2434 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » 3 ideas. » 2007-12-16 13:22:01

Three Ideas I would like to ask about.  They are on:
1-http://newmars.com/wiki/index.php/Therm … propulsion
2-http://newmars.com/wiki/index.php/NIXRS
3-http://newmars.com/wiki/index.php/Weitian_Calendar

What do you think?

BTW, I made my own template
Am I allowed to do that?

#2435 Re: Meta New Mars » Spacecraft Design » 2007-12-16 11:39:24

I you really want one, ask josh for a usergroup, but I agree w/ you on this one.

#2436 Re: Liberum Olympia » New Template » 2007-12-16 11:22:19

Nevermind, made one myself.  See it on the NIXRS article,  and on the Weitian Calendar article.

#2437 Re: Meta New Mars » general things to say. » 2007-12-15 19:16:14

On the main page of the forum somewhere, there should be a link to the wiki.  Maybe where it has a link to 'the newmars forum index' on 'the newmars forum index' big_smile

Just a suggestion

#2438 Re: Mars Rovers / University Rover Challenge » Limited Machine, Unlimited (mostly) Man - Rovers Suck!!!! » 2007-12-15 16:11:23

Oh, the sand particle hits with exactly the same amount of force.  Assuming it weighs 1/10th of a gram, at 250 kph, that is (for each sand grain) like getting hit w/ a 1 kg weight moving at.-025kph)

#2439 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Mercury » 2007-12-15 16:02:49

Actually, I think a combination of the two would be best.  Dig a 10-20 km hole, at the bottom if you're more than 10 or 20 km n/s of the equator, you NEVER get hit w/direct sunlight.  Have it 1 km on, 1 km off, then you're golden (like this)
Mercury.jpg

But this is going too far.  Why not go down 1km?  Why build shafts at all?  Why not mine mercury w/ automated machines, and get the stuff from orbit?  Venus, once you get it to a more-or-less earthlike state is somewhat stable.  But mercury?  Mercury will never be.  Mercury should be the metal mine of the system.  Instead of using  insanely long shafts to build overheated and vulnerable habs, let's experiment w/ solar powered core mining.

#2440 Re: Liberum Olympia » Some issues » 2007-12-15 10:38:19

As for the martian vs marsian issue, if it is an issue, I would vote neither, and say Marsan.  If it's an issue at all.  For metric vs imperial, maybe metric is preferred, but imperial is second best?

#2441 Re: Liberum Olympia » New Template » 2007-12-15 10:31:52

How about making a new template?  Maybe something like an Idea by Jumpboy11j template, or a Certified by an Expert template, or a This Article Needs Work template?  I think I heard maxie say something about making a new template.  Is it possible?

#2442 Re: Unmanned probes » Cool places on Mars to land » 2007-12-14 20:18:33

Hi, welcome to new mars.  This is also addressed, although for people, at http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5603  But this is a different topic.  One aim for rovers should be  Somewhere in the Hellas Basin.  it definitely has something interesting there.

#2443 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Un- conventional ways to LEO » 2007-12-14 20:10:04

Actually, on the matter of it being slowed down, I agree with you 100%.  I envision, I could be wrong, anyone correct me if I am, but it could be constantly accellerated, possibly by nasa's m2p2 concept.  However, the atmosphere at any part of the elevator being so thin, and the cable a cable, wind resistance should be minimal.  It could be built slightly topheavy to account for that.  Failing those, bringing just a little fuel on every supply ship, or 1 supply ship in 25 or so in fuel, will still drastically improve over chemical rockets.  It's not a craft, really, anyway, more of  a floating ribbon.

Sorry jumpboy11j, it had to be said

Sorry terraformer, it had to be said

very funny-- Actually, I'm just kidding, a decent joke.

And the newmars wiki gladly accepts new ideas.  Put an article there (www.newmars.com/wiki)  and list it as a wikipedia source.

#2444 Re: Civilization and Culture » A Question of Time » 2007-12-14 15:51:09

For the time system, I would of course feel greatly honored if you used the Weitian calendar (www.newmars.com/wiki/indec.php/Weitian_calendar).  That would, of course, be because I made it up tongue

About finding earth, A computer would of course be best, just a simple desktop one.
Lacking that, the earth is always within X degrees of the sun, so from day A to day B you could pray to the slightly 'west' of the sun, and from day B to day C, you could prey slightly to the 'east' of the sun.

Might not be a good idea to prey towards the sun at all, though, looking at it can damage your eyes 8)

#2445 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Important Discovery! » 2007-12-14 14:00:57

Assuming this is the picture that you ment, I have posted it below.

I really see nothing, nor do I believe that anything is there.

#2446 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Un- conventional ways to LEO » 2007-12-13 16:27:12

Sorry terraformer, it had to be said.  Now, my favorite is suborbital craft to smaller space elevator.  It would orbit the earth in about a 4 hour orbit, and begin at ~ 2-3 km above the karman line.  (102-103 km above earth's surface)

This cable would be no more than a couple hundred of km,  and steel, or at worst carbon fiber, would suffice (note- household carbon fiber, not CNT's or super advanced materials.)  Minimal fuel would be needed, it would travel at its lowest point, ~ Mach 6 or 6.5.

Of course, cnt's would lighten the load.

This means away w/ making thousands of km of cnt's.  Away with small weight quotas (smaller weight would of course be better, but bigger isn't deadly.)  Away w/ power isssues (See flywheels at http://www.liftport.com/component/optio … opic,793.0, they look good for this kind of thing)  And radiation damage ( think that even the top of the cable will be below the radiation belts.

What do you think?

#2447 Re: Mars Rovers / University Rover Challenge » Limited Machine, Unlimited (mostly) Man - Rovers Suck!!!! » 2007-12-12 14:57:00

The Martian Atmosphere is about 1 % as thick as earth's.  That means that a 250 mph wind on mars has as much strength as a 2.5 mph wind here.

The winds aren't really a problem, but those microscopic fines that get blown in them will be big trouble.

#2448 Re: Human missions » Lunar economics etc » 2007-12-05 14:45:10

Not to mention that fusing Hydrogen (protium) and Deuterium (Hydrogen 2) yeilds Helium 3

which, by the way, would get us right back to the off topic state of this topic (using Helium 3 in fusion)

#2449 Re: Meta New Mars » general things to say. » 2007-12-04 15:41:19

First, I would like to suggest some sort of conversation thing on the side.  I've seen it before, and it was very useful.  Basically, it's a shoutout box, it's aways there, and you can have public ie- everyone looking at the site can see them- conversations.  its rectangular, about 150 by 1000 pixels ( downwards in my experience.

Also, could I request that me and someone else (no point really, maybe just to 'check my power') be made mod of one of the subsections of the "Earth" section? (the whole section wouldn't be a problem either, there have been 2 posts there in the last month.)

Third, I would just like to reiterate that I would gladly help with anytthing that needs to be done.  Does trawling through the old posts for wiki info sound like a good idea?

What about H-D Fusion?  It doesn't seem to have been researched much and there are no neutrons let off.  I don't know if that's good or bad.  But Surely H-1 and H-2 would be so much cheaper to get?  About that tritium storage issue, there is a magical compount that can store 2 tritiums per molecule.  It only contaits tritium and a very common element.  It can be stored in a closed aluminum can with no losses.  Some call it dihydrogen monoxide.  I call it water. big_smile
