understanding why
The initiators of the attacks decided to implement their plan after America has provoked immense hatred throughout the world. Not because of its might, but because of the way it uses its might. It is hated by the enemies of globalization, who blame it for the terrible gap between rich and poor in the world. It is hated by millions of Arabs, because of its support for the Israeli occupation and the suffering of the Palestinian people. It is hated by multitudes of Muslims, because of what looks like its support for the Jewish domination of the Islamic holy shrines in Jerusalem. And there are many more angry peoples who believe that America supports their tormentors.
Until September 11, 2001 ? a date to remember - Americans could entertain the illusion that all this concerns only others, in far-away places beyond the seas, that it does not touch their sheltered lives at home. No more.
understanding world leaders, their position?
This is not a battle between the United States and terrorism but between the free and democratic world and terrorism.
This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world. The people who perpetrate it have no regard whatever for the sanctity or value of human life.
We, the democracies of the world, must come together and defeat and eradicate it."
- Tony Blair, UK Prime Minister.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the darkest days of European history,
America stood close by us
and today we stand close by America.

how long would it be before those arriving to live on mars suddenly developed a home sick yearning to go back to Earth?
a) 3 months
b) 6 months
c) 1 year
d) 2 years

too true space nut
ok ok here goes QUIZ 4; you are driving home from work alone in your own car, when you see a house on fire, suddenly the front door screeches open and a teenage boy runs out, his clothes are ablaze and upon seeing your car runs straight to YOU, he is WELL ON FIRE, what do you do?
a) beckon him into your car, there is a swimming pool less than 2 miles from here that you are fairly sure is open this time of day, you can drive him to the swimming pool very quickly
b) ignore the boy, there are quite possibly more members of his family inside, there is no time to waste, STORM in through the open door and see if you can rescue them all from the raging inferno
c) approach the boy in an authoritative manner, STOP HIM, move him to the ground immediately and roll him - if possible using some heavy fabric wrapped around him before the roll, with any luck, this should put his flames out
d) tell the boy to calm down and then set about finding a fire extinguisher, either in your own car or from one of the neighbours' houses or cars, before using the fire extinguisher though, tell the boy to close his eyes tightly
QUIZ 5
You feel that a night on the town is in order after you pass your astronomy exam
as you arrive at "Henry's Extra" night club, you see that there has been a fight
A man aged about 30 has been punched and his mouth has blood coming from it. As you arrive, a woman says to you "Look, his tooth has been punched out" and in the road you see a tooth lieing there. The woman picks the tooth up and with her bicycle water bottle, washes the tooth over with fresh water, handing the tooth to you - saying "That's evidence mate" There is no sign of the assailant
a) you tell the woman to keep the tooth in her water bottle, to keep it best preserved for the moment
b) you take the tooth, making sure that the poor victim is reassured, reinsert the tooth BACK into his tooth socket where it came from
c) you throw the tooth in the nearest waste bin, as it will only upset the poor guy
Mad Grad :;): you got another QUIZ up your sleeve??
Dark Star is a beautiful sci fi movie but sadly now tremendously dated
I first saw Dark Star back in 1984 and have seen it many times since, didn't particularly like the ending but at least Carpenter built on some tongue in cheek humour to make it less sour of a finish

without permission?
who's permission is required exactly ?
1977 was the year I purchased a Peter Frampton 8-track.
Was that a good year? You all be the judge.
yeah and it's now available on CD thank goodness
1977 was an exceedingly good year: CONFIRMED
hi Mad Grad - thanks for looking at my 2 quizzes - so I will now look at yours
I say answer B because I have never had training in any 'Automated Emergency Defibrilator,' althought it sounds mighty tempting for sure
D is the worst answer for sure, no way - remember THIS is your secret sweet heart we're talking about here and only after 1 hour of continuous CPR do we then admit to the slight possibility of failure

Airdate: 27 AUG 9:00 PM GMT Discovery Science Sky 555 NTL 510/134
Discovery Channel will air the three-hour documentary "Mars on Earth." The documentary was filmed by twice-Emmy- award winning filmmaker Andy Liebman. To make the documentary, Liebman and a crew of 5 spent two summers living and working with the Mars Society and NASA Haughton Mars Project teams.
"The Mars Society built a prototype of a spacecraft habitat that could land humans on Mars and serve as their base in the exploration of the Martian surface. The purpose of the prototype is to study how astronauts will one day explore and inhabit our neighboring world.
This habitat, to which Discovery Channel film crews have exclusive inside access, is the Mars Arctic Research Station (MARS). It was constructed at the Haughton meteorite impact crater on Devon Island in northern Canada, an environment described as a cold polar desert. NASA scientists have been finding an astonishing variety of terrain and natural features there that resemble those reported on the planet Mars.
Join the crew of the research station as they conduct experiments, go on away missions and learn how to get along in this harsh environment."

I saw part 1 of 2 on Discovery Science last night
Filmed in 2001, it was a fascinating programme
ZUBRIN himself was a larger than life character and when the first section of the habitat went over, exposing chaotic, if not hopeless health and safety organisation, one had only sympathy and support for all concerned.
Who financed this gigantic undertaking? The people selected to participate were all filmed by the Discovery Channel and were seen to be well switched on and motivated individuals
still, it seems pretty rich that all we get is 2 x 1 hour programmes?
anybody else see this material?
great great viewing and part 2 of 2 on Friday 27th (UK SKY, CABLE TV)
I got to the Swiss Alps euro and saw a 10 degree move but not 180 oh well - must have taken a wrong turn there somewhere
ok - any terraformers landing on Mars would ALL need to be highly proficient in first aid - ARE YOU?
let's see what kind of first aider you are!!
QUIZ 1
========================
You are out and about shopping on your own, for your latest edition of "Mars R US weekly," when suddenly you come upon a disorientated male who has collapsed - a few other people have stopped, but don't appear to know what to do
The man is breathing and has a pulse, but just seems to have fainted. There are no visible injuries either. You decide to SEARCH the person, to see if you can find any medical cards or identity clues
a) no, I would not search the man, I have no right to do so
b) yes I would search him but first I would ask a member of the public to be my witness
c) I do have a right to search but a search would not be necessary in this case
d) I would search him but there is no need for any "witness"
QUIZ 2
======================
Further down the road there has been quite a bad crash
A motorcyclist has been hit and come off his motorbike
You notice that he is laying on the road wearing a full face helmet
a) I would not remove the crash helmet in any circumstances, Doctors or Paramedics only
b) yes, as it is a FULL FACE crash helmet the helmet would have to be removed pretty fast to gain access for checking of possible head injuries
c) I would assess the motorcyclist's injuries first. If an open airway cannot be maintained for example - I would then remove the helmet
