HI-SEAS
Have you thoroughly absorbed their "reality of awareness"? (IE - Full Description)

"Team Processes"  -  "Effectiveness"  -  "Stress Management"
"Resilience Training"  -  "Mental Block"  -  "Shared Social Behavior"
"Psychological Effects  -  "Team Building"

- James S. Martin Jr., re birthed as Zeus would, would seriously smite something.
    ( rest his soul )
- Kim Stanley Robinson would have no problems writing a new book titled:
"Beyond Aurora - Return to the Planet of the Political Social Apes"
- Scott Adams would profit from another Comic Strip of Animal Husbandry in the Work Place.

The nasa peeples (spelled the way you see it) have "issues"
Intellectualization is not eight words (counting syllables).

Their description of the Habitat (as per April 29, 2013)....
"We will be providing more detailed information on the Hab,
including updated photos and the various systems,
as the crew settles in for the mission ahead."  [ seen today" May 6 2017 ]
OK... where is it?

Some of the most educated / collegiate minds, all happily certified by nasa to embark
into the dark world of isolationism (6 words).   I'm hoping Mensa wasn't onboard.

The "media coverage" of this outweighed the actual off-world experiments achieved.
This is pathetic - is this the best nasa can do?
Countless youtubes and facebook blah blah blahs of "their experience".

Where are the instruments to aid discovery?
They have an entire scientific arsenal of paid-for devices, and
they're armed with wi-fi work stations.
No one goes to another planet without the instruments of their trade.

This is me, pointing out what's missing. This is not a ranting post for derisive replies from others.

Ask yourselves - what would you do while on the surface of Mars?

#77 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Researchers invent novel catalyst to convert carbon dioxide » 2017-05-05 19:27:18

OK.. it's a mazing how a few keystrokes can render different results.

With Low Temp plasma Techniques, we get two things we can work with
1. Dry Reforming of Methane Using Plasma-Catalysis
2. Methanation of CO2

Below 200 degrees (F), High Voltage Plasma, and a Nickel Coated Anode,
these things are possible, right now as we speak.

THIS would be yet ANOTHER excellent working experiment at the MDRS.

So Glad You Asked That Question... Thank You.

We Have Several Worlds of Portable & Remote Operating Abilities
Android - Microchip PIC - Raspberry Pi - Arduino.
(there's obviously more, let's just keep the numbers down)

Soon as a Remote Rover GPR/Magnetometer is put into action, THEN, we'll see some action.
True, this is NOT used enough...

Other uses NEEDED NOW are:
- EVA Suit Health Monitoring
- Remote Magnetic Clinometer
- Synchronized Seismic Sensors
- Other Station Telemetry (Data Feeds)

Let's go a bit further to the Off-World Side of Life, yeah?
You're on Mars and you DO NOT have: Cable, TV, AM/FM, Wolf Blitzer, or Fox News.

The Martian Atmosphere can handle up to 7.5 MHz for HF Communications.
Everything else is Line-of-Sight VHF, with Repeater Stations.

That means on this planet with all our happy little analog stations,
no one is talking to anyone else.

So.... What Would the Licensed Ham Radio Operator Use For Comms On Planet Mars?

There are over 726,000 Ham Operators in the U.S.
Less than two (2) have actually been on Mission at the MDRS.

The Past Three Years, I've seen a rise of "Interests Groups" of many levels.
SEDS - STEM - Mars None, and about thirty other titled themes...

The actual pattern seen here is an increase of intellectual Run-Ups, Starters, and Crowd Funding.

Lovely websites - eye catching graphics - beautifully profound one-liner Titles.
boasting the catch-phrases of:
"We Will Get There"   "We Will Reach For..."    "Our Future is There"    We Are Working Hard"
Etcetera and Etcetera.

All organizations debuting their best foot forward, in their own individualistic right...
and in a constant flow of repetition.
Amongst the cacophony... the letter "I" is found from the term "Team Work"

This is best summed up by having three wrist watches on one arm - which one tells the right time?

Keep the Youth & Community Colleges to Maker_Mars, and align the Young Adults with
the Aerospace Engineers Apprenticeship Programs.

This is not a "new order"... this is protocol of progress.

"Would You Entertain a Red Dragon - Mars Direct - Sample Return Mission for 2018 ?

Working on a theme here...
For The Mars Society to to increase their presence on the TMRO Channel on YouTube.
Not one episode goes by, without the mention of Space-X

At some point in the near future - we will be witness to the Red  Dragon  Mars  Direct  Sample  Return

Let me say that again...
Red  Dragon  Mars  Direct  Sample  Return.

A Totally Autonomous Mission to Test the Waters of Mars Direct and
get something in return.... MARTIAN BITS !

So, it's probably a good time to REMIND the politician peeple Things that:
"the  purpose of spaceships is to travel across space and explore new worlds...
not to hang out in space and study the health effects of doing so..."
( Robert Zubrin - Nov. 2003 Committee on Space Exploration )

So - the TMRO Channel puts out MORE Space Info in one episode than
Washington does in 30 years.

True, the New Hermes Space Truck from "The Martian" is the way to go.

We've seen not one experiment where actual human tissue is monitored..
   OUTSIDE THE VAN ALLEN BELT.

Would prove a worthy endeavor for advances in "Rad Hardening Tissue Repair"

What's Interesting about the Sand Dunes on Mars is their content of OLIVINE.

Given that, and knowing how well the Voxeljet Company glues 3D Printed Shapes using
adhesive - it seems quite possible to to the same thing on mars using ANAEROBIC ADHESIVE.

               ( voxeljet_dot_com )

Olivine  -  the ONLY Substance on the planet mars to be a finely processed granular commodity.

Been sharing this notion with the Staff the past few years.
It's in the Title, yeah?... Maker_Mars ?

A very short title that kids can remember while Meandering in Maker Merriment.

This is an excellent arena where an Ultimate Contest can heighten interest.
Such as: "EVA Extreme" Challenge - groups make EVA Devices destined the
MDRS, FMARS, or ANY Analog Station for that matter..

But. the ultimate Prize is when their device gets selected to GO TO MARS FOR REAL !

Like Zubrin said: "Using Our Existing Technology"

It's Already here - Let's Use It To Our Advantage.

As seen from The Mars Underground Documentary... the 3rd Stage glides along with the Hab Module and
is cabled for the Gravity Dance during the 6 month transit.

This Third Stage is a very big & expensive piece of hardware that
should be parked somewhere - so it can be used for the same task
on the return trip.

So that "Humans will be seen as arriving in an upright position when they return"

OK.. Phobos is a good place to park it.
Can't miss Phobos, right?

Phobos makes for an excellent location as a Transit Terminal, TeleComm Relay,
Temporary Shelter, Supply Storage & Transfer Point and, a spot to park your Dinghy !

Having a good week for imagining.
...actually.. this is easy.

To have ALL ANALOG STATIONS on EARTH - AMATEUR RADIO READY.

Having ALL Stations Communicating to each other and sharing what they've explored.

Doesn't take a lot of neurons to imagine how you would communicate
when Mars is tattered with Habitat Stations, yeah ?

All it takes is for at least TWO LICENSED OPERATORS PER ANALOG

This might be one of the most evoking Topics.

Red Dragon - Mars Direct - Sample Return

What better way for Dr.Zubrin to put "proof of principle" to test than to have
all the Human Elements of Mars Direct ON BOARD the Red Dragon, for the purpose
of a Sample-Return Mission  ----  AT THE SAME TIME.

Never mind the impatient parochial social media.

"Dragon-Direct-Red-Sample-Returning"      (DDRSR )
That even sounds extremely COOL !

Here's the point - get the hardware there and prove that it works
The absolute proof is when the Reg Dragon re-enters Earth Orbit for Rendezvous.

THIS is where I would put my money !

It speaks better money spent than the political platitudes of intelectualism.

--  Imagine the reality of this concept  --
"The Winner of the URC Wins the Role in Having THEIR ROVER Operate One Year at the MDRS"

How about that - a Full-Size, Fully Functioning Rover, Operating one full year at the MDRS.
( or, FMARS, for that matter )

During that time, this "assigned rover" will have added BOTH Magnetometer & GPR performing an On-Going
Mission of Underground Geodesic Surveying to the farthest reaches of the Habitat.

- Half-Day Runs - 12 noon to 12 midnight
- Daily Recharges
- Personal Assist for Battery Change Outs
- Telemetry Data received and stored
- Collected Data interpreted with OPEN SOURCE Programmes.
- Sub-Surface 3D Visualized.
- End Result Sent To Mission Control
- Mission Control to prospective Off-World Geologists (and then, facebook)
- Rover Makers Achieve Serious Street Cred.
- Next Year - Start The Whole Process Over Again.

Sound Do-able?

The Sponsored URC would then have a "working return" on their investment.
Considering the cost of renting Geodesic Equipment ( GPRs, EM-I Sensors, Seismic, etc )

#90 Re: Mars Society International » Projects - projects we can do now to get to Mars » 2017-04-29 09:25:53

"Projects We Can Do Now"....     ( OK... let's roll up our sleeves )

- Promulgate a "Maker_Mars" program for MakerSpaces to produce EVA Experiments for the MDRS.
- Execute a SIM for Remote Piloting of a Supply Ship (UAV) to the Analog(s).
- TMS to Initiate Radio Communications to ALL Analogs on Earth (the way it should be - with no borders).
- Fabricate and use an ISRU device to produce Methane to fuel the Converted ATVs.
- Make an inexpensive Ground Penetrating Radar for fitting onto the Hab's Rover.
- Have and Encourage, Licensed Amateur Radio Operators for ALL Crew Members  AND  Mission Control.
- Gamma & Cosmic Ray Detector PERMANENTLY at the Habs.
- Improved EVA Suit DEDICATED TELEMETRY devices for Health & Position Monitoring ( NO GPS ! ).
- Geodesics Program, with Magneto-Metric and EM-I Detectors for Complete-Subsurface-Tomography.
- Sell MDRS Cook Books - proceeds go to The Mars Society.
- 3D Print a New Series of EVA Helmets WITH Heads Up Display linked to the Habs.
- Make use of RF Beacons and Line-of-Sight Communications (you're gonna need it, trust me).
- Test Different protocols of Telemetry under low-power & high-interference conditions.
- Determine best locations in Tharsis Region for Lava Tube Habitats for protection from harsh radiation.
- Produce a mock up of the Sample-Return Mission.
- MAKE the devices that are onboard the Sample-Return Mission ( might just actually go there ! ).
- Write "a proper" Technical Manual for the MDRS in Apollo Style ( not a camping booklet ).
- A Full-Sized, Permanent-Based ROVER, Power generated by Solar and Methane Generator to Battery Storage.
- A Single Prop (methane fueled), Ares Rocket-Plane Style of Drone, for FLIR Photogrammetry Survey of entire Hab area.

Of course, people will post whinny remarks about "we don't have money" or the typical "ahem.. no can do"

I DID mention about MakerSpace as the vehicle for "Maker_Mars", yeah?
Google them up, find one in your area, physically ask them, and make things happen, make us proud.
Simple.
The objective is to get the enthusiasts to actually make things that can actually be sent to MDRS, FMARS, Mars.

An excellent topic Robert.. thank you !

It's been a few Quarters since our last Mars Quarterly
Actually, almost four years.

Compared to the attention-span of today's social media, I'd put my money on a Quarterly.
I admire the concise articles to the matters at hand for our off-world adventures.

The prominent features I enjoy are the interviews amongst aerospace industry.
Would like to see more, including the latest happenings at the Mojave Spaceport.
Or, a nice plug for the TMRO Channel on YouTube.

Other articles-of-interest would be:          ( off the top of my head )
- Piloting the arrival of Supply Ships safely near the Settlement.
- Darian Calendar + Earth Calendar Dates of Meetings & Conventions.
- The Mechanics of ISRU - making and storing fuel & air resources.
- 3D Printing using the Martian Sand Dunes.
- URC Updates
- The Mars Society's MDRS Channel on YouTube.
- The Ariane Kitchen - featured recipes from the MDRS Crews
- Communicating Off-World
- Star Gazing from Mars
- Phobos / Deimos - GPS & Telecomm Stations
- Orbiting Satellite Matters
- The Human Body in a 38 percent environment.
- A Letter from the President ( RZ of course )
- The Earth Beneath Your Martian Feet ( Ground Penetrating Radar )
- Wrap ups and Mentions of previous Conventions

I would absolutely love to see a series of articles on "Red Dragon and the Sample Return".
The ultimate First Plan to test the Mars Direct Hardware!

To see the Quarterly continue is important because the reading presents the ideas and happenings
that must be read and understood - by actually reading the articles.
Not flipped through like a passing blog.

The Quarterly represents the Society's Purpose & Agenda.
THIS IS OUR BUSINESS.

Please write to the Editors of The Mars Quarterly and ask for an update !
Even if it means publishing every Martian Quarter.

Dave
