because all the other fuels will be dried up . . . nuclear might be so common place that nuclear rockets may make more sence in a generation(human) or two.
He got it up there didn't he? I think the important point is he makes space stations cheaper and maybe even interplanetary spacecraft. Cheap rockets are of course still a problem . . . .

well, the news has spread to this website, but, it is still not confirmed; although, the article did give a new detail about a mountainside getting hit; probably, it's just taking time to get out in the wilderness to see the extent of what happened. This news item will surelly spread bigger and bigger as the news spreads from word of mouth.

usually, when a theoretical crisis like this is presented, an innovative solution is found which speeds the whole development;
well, 97 percent increase in nanotube purity got to put a pretty good dent in the materials problem for space elevators.
As for the statistical calculation that space elevators will be impossible to build, I just saw a spacedaily article about genetic algorithms being used on nuclear propulsion; certainly, advanced computing can be used on controlling the making of the space elevator ribon; if it turns out to need that much computing, what a technological marvel the space elevator will turn out to be!(yes, i view technologies as precious and the more marvelous the better! I have my own rationality about it all, but it seems to be all my own!)
i'm affraid I don't know all the latest results on nanotubes well enough to exactly say where they are in making bulk nanotube materials, even if I put in 'nanotube alignment' or something like that in yahoo or google; i'd say ask Liftport! They probably monitor the state of the art much more closelly than I there.
But! As I've mentioned, I remember seeing video of some kind of nanotube sheet maker that spat out about two or three meters of plastic sheet looking nanotube material in a few minutes time(this seems almost years ago now), so, they have the nanotube alignment problem down to some pretty good degree.
I'd post this here because it is a way of getting us out into space, even as a sort of interplanetary propulsion.

wow, did I say the earth is round? That space and time are flexible?
maybe I was right all along, we need to make a scientific culture - bare minimum, a science cultured corporation, if not a whole country; this is the only way to get space colonization funded.

i've recalled that what I knew about 80's anti-matter containers was not that they had just learned how to contain anti-matter, but they had just made and contained anti-hydrogen, so, physicists ability to contain antimatter was at a fairly high level even back then.
it's been awhile, so, I can't generate a reference link immediatelly, but I remember some recent news about scooping up anti-matter from the earth's own radiation belts; apparently, there is enough to scoop up!

250 million just to make and store the anti-matter; they've had anti-matter storage since the eighties at least, so they can't be too bad considering the pace of development in the particle physics industries; i guess all that basic research can really pay off!
