#476 Re: Space Policy » Chinese Space Program? - What if they get there first » 2005-10-07 09:39:09

I just hope China puts off its plan to go to hydrogen Lox and kerosene lox. It would be less expensive to keep hypergolics for the time--and build a larger rocket like R-56.

Do a search for R-56 Monoblock at www.astronautix.com and look at the RD-270 engine.

I just want one good nuclear reactor on the moon--and you will have the power for a foundry.

#479 Re: Human missions » Space Elevator, Ho! » 2005-10-07 09:33:27

I actually heard the Liftport folks on the Radio. I'm glad they are getting some press.

#481 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Why don't we go to space in one of these babies? » 2005-10-07 09:29:53

JP Aerospace thinks they can get a very lightweight airship up to speed (ATO)

I don't think so.

#483 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Rocket Monopoly - United Launch Alliance » 2005-10-07 09:27:18

That would be telling.

On a serious note Mike Pence who suggested the NASA cuts seems to be in trouble. Sadly--so is Tom Delay--about the best friend NASA has in the Beltway.

One more reason to wonder about Space Elevators.

Sir, as soon as the Space Elevator touched ground, the whole global electrical circuit discharged itself. The tethers gone, the platforms gone, and everybody within 50 miles fell over dead with a heart attack--but I have good news

You saved money on your car insurance?

No--my car a diesel--is the only one that works--see ya!

#488 Re: Human missions » NASA's Moon Mission » 2005-09-23 15:35:22

Par for the course. It's the only way to get political support.

Good Kliper model

#490 Re: Single Stage To Orbit » Realistic solutions to the difficulties of SSTO? » 2005-09-23 15:31:17

What do you people think about this design?  It is SSTO, HTOL, 200,000 lbs. payload, using 3 rockets and 10 turboramjets.

It is a lovely concept. One day in the future that may be possible. It should have enough propellants--and 100 tons to orbit no less.

If it works.

One of my favorite paper projects.

#491 Re: Human missions » Ichabod » 2005-09-23 15:27:30

Write your Congressmen and Senators people! NASA is going to be the whipping boy again, all to feed gambling den rebuilds, moochers and fighter-jocks with F-22s and JSFs

#492 Re: Human missions » Neil Armstrong: Mars easier than Moon » 2005-09-23 15:25:43

If onlt these hurricanes had waited a dozen yrs or so.

#493 Re: Human missions » SRB booster for CEV » 2005-09-23 15:24:18

So you keep support--gut JPL and you still have your launch architecture.

Hehe, you won't be able to gut JPL, but you will be able to put them in check.  Force those fellows to come up with unified flight architecture that 80% of there future mission will be able to fly on.  I'm so sick and tired of JPL developing and entirely new vehicle each and every time they design a mission (and someone please teach them how to write a report while your in their "backside").  Other than that, good plan.

Somebody needs to tell those prima donna's what for.

#494 Re: Human missions » Down sizing the shuttle Army » 2005-09-23 15:22:52

It's up to Rita now if we even have a JSC.

#495 Re: Human missions » Vision Presents Opportunity to Axe ISS/SS » 2005-09-23 15:22:03

Right now, some 'fiscal conservatives' want to gut NASA in Operation Offset.

Do a search, and get out the knives.

#497 Re: Interplanetary transportation » ION Engines » 2005-09-23 15:19:08

Look at this chart. Look at the far right-hand side (middle right) You will see that an 80% NSWR rocket outclasses most everything. You don't need anti-matter

#498 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Rocket Monopoly - United Launch Alliance » 2005-09-23 15:15:07

And now comes "Operation Offset" with Moon/Mars to be axed to pay for Katrina. Nickels and dimes compared to Iraq, DDX, JSF, etc. (ULA probably behind some of that too.)

It makes me want to pick up a Kalashnikov.

#499 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Launch Loop » 2005-09-23 15:11:45

That is a lot like what James Powell has been advocating with his maglev projects.

#500 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Carbon nanotube material ready for practical applications » 2005-09-23 15:07:56

We will never beat hydrocarbons for density and ease of storage--but this will help.
