#29 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Europe build a Heavy lifter ( 100 tonne Euro-HLLV ) ? » 2007-11-09 12:43:41

As for other uses for the heavy lifter, Russia could request the construction of a space "dacha" in orbit with a launches of a heavy lifter, if anyone complains, they go straight to Siberia.

Sounds like my kind of leader.

"Comrade Putin! We have found body of anti-space Congressman at bottom of steps!"

Da, he make giant leap for all mankind. Time for make more Dioxin soup

#30 Re: Interplanetary transportation » What Would A Space Shuttle System Look Like If Built Today? » 2007-11-09 12:22:11

You could eliminate the main engines from the shuttle.

Like Buran.

You could also probably replace many of the heat resistant tiles with todays materials.

Thats how I would go.

There is a new book on Energiya Buran

Nice links here

Here is a concept for all the folks here who do artwork on conceptual spacecraft.--Put a block II type shuttle side mount against Ares V.

That would be NSWR. A good payload for Sea Dragon. A little kero for the first stage, uranium salts for the payload--sea water for everything else.

#34 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Xenon Fission Powered Reocket » 2007-11-09 12:01:28

Americium would work, but it goes super critical at a very small mass, has all the normal problems with radoactive waste, and won't genorate any net energy because it is produced from urainum with neutron bombardment, so it'd probably only be useful on some sort of exotic probe engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americium

Carlo Rubbia advocated Americium for spacecraft.

#35 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Using the Space Shuttle in some way? » 2007-11-09 11:53:28

In some parallel universe STS had the SSMEs/RS-68s under the ET--with EELV class Zenit strap-ons (only with two F-1s per strap-on).

And the Russians had the engines on their one flight orbiter...

#37 Re: Interplanetary transportation » SS2 - status » 2007-11-09 11:49:19

I think it is to be named after Fossett.

#39 Re: Interplanetary transportation » F-1 Rocket engine » 2007-11-09 11:45:45

RD-170 has somewhat greater thrust and is used for Zenit (the Energiya strap-on).

#40 Re: Interplanetary transportation » A solar sail question » 2007-11-09 11:44:31

It all comes down to surface area. Ares V is perfect in that its wide shorud will alow future membranes to open up--unfurling to huge dimentions.

It is thought the large hole in the universe might be a texture

“The possibility that this is a texture is very exciting,” said Professor Turok

#47 Re: Human missions » Alt.space debacle (GCNRevenger 's gonna love this) » 2007-06-23 12:59:18

I wonder if Musk (if he could get some others to help) could obtain plans for the Saturn IB. It used a cluster of Redstones of about the same size as the current Falson, and would actually be tiny compared to the Stick and carry about as much. But the rumor has it he is already rolling metal on Falcoln V/IX.

The Saturn is too much for Musk

Not if the other space start ups were to join him. Saturn IB is small compared to Ares I and Delta IV "heavy."

Alternate Launch Abort System (ALAS) Configurations (PDF)

This proposed design changes the aerodynamic shape of the protective fairing that extends over the Command Module. Preliminary analysis indicates that payload can be increased by 545 kg by reducing loads through the CM structure and therefore its mass.

I like the second version (on the right)
