O.K. there is a couple of people trying to make the best out of the images:

I hope for some interesting data from the gas chromatograph.
Who was responsible for not switching on the second transmitter ? NASA or ESA ?
Anyway - that was ...... missing words...

A prophecy ?
Thank you for your thoughts, cassioli.
But I have no confirmation yet.
Strange...I asked this question a couple of times but never got a "yes" or "no".
I seems to me that the rovers are not equipted to detect surface or subsurface water (ice, brine).
I wish that NASA would decide to test that hypothesis.
But I think their attention is fixed to the bigger "puddle" now.
Can't wait to see more images...
By the way:
Does anybody know if the rovers would be able to remote sense liquid water (brine, acid) or ice (snow) on the surface ?
But what happened to the berries at the puddle area ?
Why is this area berry-free ?
Is there a puddle at the bottom of this image ?
Also interesting: Berry close up analysis by someone...
"What the hell is there, under the red dust of 'Mazatzal'?!?"
Good question ..
There is a coating rich in chlorine ans sulfate:
[http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/ … 7R1_br.jpg]http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery...._br.jpg
There are at least two layers inside the coating
( see [http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/ … 0401a.html]http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/ … 0401a.html )
Below that coating is basalt.
NASA:
"Its outer coating or rind, on the other hand, appears to be of a different constitution. Scientists are still puzzling out the implications of these data."
Any ideas about the coating ?
"Which brings me to a puzzling observation: The lack of rocks at Eagle crater and its general area."
Interesting. That question did come to my mind suddenly yesterday, too.
I have no explanation....
any geologists ?
Interesting find..I'm not sure...could be something moving..could have been a hidden rock...
interesting !
Reminds me of proliferating yeast. See the following site for visible example:
Of course there is a big gap regarding dimensions (a yeast cell is only a few microns long).
And I would find it very unlikely if these marbles were single celled organisms.
I could rather imagine some kind of a higher developed spherical bacterial colony...or the fruit body of some kind of "mushroom" living inside rocks or inside soil..or...whatever...
Yes...and...
Look at that one ...
[http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/ … 52M2M1.JPG]http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery....2M1.JPG
It looks like (JUST SPECULATION !!!) the big "thing" has two "channels" connecting it to one of the marbles.
The lower left marble shows bifurcation (mirror symetry) again....
Very interesting indeed.
Seems that we have a couple of new interesting marbles in the new images:
1. A flattened type (like a sphere deformed from pressure from one or two sites)
[http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/ … 33M2M1.JPG]http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery....2M1.JPG
2. A marble with a "leaf like" substructure
[http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/ … 53M2M1.JPG]http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery....2M1.JPG
Does it point toward any haypothesis or against any hypothesis ?
Any explanations ? New Hypothesis ?
All I can say is "strange, strange, strange..." but that means nothing...
The "leaf" looks particular starange, doesn't it ?

What do you think ?

I found a siencedaily announcment of the paper.
[http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 … 065947.htm]http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 … 065947.htm
Ups...I thought it was the most recent. Or is it ?
I meant a recent (2003) paper stating that the geometry and orientation (in chains) of magnetite crystals inside the ALH globules can only be explained by the action of bacteria.
I will google again and come back later...
Does anyone else remember ?
Yes there was a back and forth on this topic for quite a while, but since that relatively recent paper there was no more "against life paper" coming up.
The latest results on ALH84001 brought some very strong evidence for bacteria. See for yourself:

Muliticellular Life ???
Why not ?
We have no example for what happened on mars.
Billions of years of evolution of a whole planet under water shortage conditions...bringing certain kinds of evolutionary pressure ( need for UV protection or nearly water dense hull,...).
It's hard to tell.
