Re: Mars Society Questions

I was just wondering what you think of this part of the Mars Society charter and if you know of anything that is being done within TMS to fulfill it in the real world-

3. Conducting Mars exploration on a private basis.
Starting small, with hitchhiker payloads on government funded missions, we intend to use the credibility that such activity will engender to mobilize larger resources that will enable stand-alone private robotic missions and ultimately human exploration

We have earth analogues but what actual Mars exploration has TMS been involved in? Are there any detailed plans for such or taskforces for such steps to be taken?

Personally I have not found any but I could be wrong. In the meantime several TMS members from across the world, in concert with other groups like SFF, TPS, SpaceNow, 4 Frontiers, Mars Foundation, Red Colony and others have started to work towards this actual exploration goal at www.marsdrive.com At present we are in think tank mode but all help is appreciated.

Re: Mars Society Questions

The Mars Society worked on TransLife (an experiment to see how well mice grow in Mars gravity), and of course the Mars Analoug Research Stations are all experiments to exist on Mars itself (they're minor experiments). Also, they were pushing for the inflatable ISS module, which inexplicably got scrapped (it was a great idea). All in all the Mars Society does contribute, members are always trying to propose new ideas and get funding and backing by government.
