One of the best movies of 2005 is an underrated film by the name of Serenity
214-i.jpg
http://www.gm.tv/index.cfm?articleid=16659
Serenity stole the show at Edinburgh Film Festival this year with tickets for all five screenings selling out in record time. At a recent multi media screening, it received spontaneous applause, from an audience which is often hard to please.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

I saw serenity and liked it alot, it had good action, some funny jokes, and is one of the few good scifi movies to come out in years. It is better than star wars ep 1 and 2 and just as good as ep 3. The movie did alright at the bockoffice this opening weekend. I bet that the movie serenity will make more than enough money from DVD sales and international movie ticket sales to make a big profit.
I would really like to sea a more firefly movies, like what happened to star treck movies. Star treck too was a short lived TV show but went on to make many movies.
In serenity the movie is based in a really big solar system with hunderds of planets and moons all terraformed to be like the earth. Such a place would be a terraformer dream come true. I was thinking about it and such a solar system is possible. A large central star type F with 2 type G star in orbit, or two brown drawths. Such a system with star having many rocky and gas gaint planets could have have hunderds of moons and planets that could be terraformed. Triple star sytems exist, also we are learning that there are many types of solar systems so are own example of neatly spaced planets might not be common.
I know that some exoplanets solar system found have very large multi jupitor mass planets in stable orbit in the life zone of there stars. Such big world could have many earth or mars sized moons all easily terraformed.
Then these far off solar system are colonized due to there great distance from earth they will each become there own society and branch of ManKind. Each will be there own solar kingdom or empire, and other than old radio signals like tento 50 years old contact will be limited among the different star systems. But you guys knew that too. Any ways I like scifi that diferent from the star trecks or star war were every one just simple travels with FTL ships across the space. It just seems too good and easy way to get around the vastness of space.

Serenity is one of the greatest scifi movies of all time.

And Firefly was one of the greatest scifi TV shows of all time.

I love them.

I literally cried at the end of Serenity.

You really don't need to see the original show to understand the movie

The Firefly - Serenity idea
it is a cool universe, there are zero aliens in this universe ( none discovered yet - or maybe mankind is the only real self aware creature in our Galaxy),
the feel of a space colony is very real, the law & culture is harsh, there is no faster than light for most of the ships & and rather than having Earth type planets the terraforming ideas are great.

you can view clips from the old firefly show here

If you still really want to get clued-in, are a bit say 'unethical' or unscruplous and afraid you may be lost
you could try to download a single firefly episode from limewaare, kasaa, or napster type stuff
some say the 'Train job' or 'Bushwhacked' are good to get into the show quickly, or you might find a written review of some of the old episodes online

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

No, no, if you even download it, download the pilot episode. But if I recall, the DVD set is ridiciulously cheap, I think I got it for $20. They only made 13 episodes, and only like 10 of them actually aired on FOX.

You don't need to see the show to understand the movie.

But if you see the show first you will appreciate the movie so so much more.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

I think the Matrix. It echos something that I feel like I have always known, ever since I understood the concept of "infinity" as it applies to time.

In an infinate universe with infinate time, EVERTHING is a statistical certainty.

Lately I've been watching more of the Matrix than I even choose to.  (Frequently it's the only thing on.)

To the point that it bothers me about how much didn't get mentioned in the movie(s) that COULD have.

Such as the possiblity that the human race could have volunteered to become incorporated.

The idea that the machines wanted the human race as a "battery" was WEAK, and a rather stupid pretext to put in an ad for Duracell.

With thousands of years of human development being oriented toward immortality, and current advances in artificial intelligence and data storage being what they are, it is obvious to me that the end-point of this trend is the ability to permanently store the data "identity" of every human being for all eternity.

And if you can do that, you can also create an electronic environment in which to allow it to "execute".

So why so nefarious and simple-minded a "plot"?  You "wake" each human every thousand years or so and ask them not only whether they would like to be "real" or not, but also what kind of "illusory" existance they would like to have for the next thousand years or so.

So the whole "Heaven & Hell" concept gets fleshed out a bit.

Do what you are supposed to do for a period of time (say a lifetime or 20, it doesn't matter) and you get to spend the next hundred thousand years romping around in bed with the playmate(s) of your choice.

There's an eternity in which to experience everything, so a few thousand years here and there means nothing.

So yeah, the Matrix for sure.  Best Scene was when Neo meets (what's he called...) "The Architect", I guess.

I think about alternative timelines about this scene.  How about The Architect reveals that the WHOLE POINT had been to "grow" (or identify) his "replacement"?

On the list of things for me to do lately is to re-play the part where the Oracle is talking to Neo in the Basketball Courts; where she says something like "I just LOVE candy".

That scene kind of flashed by me the other day and it occured to me that she was eating some candy at the time.  And it was red or blue, I can't remember.

So I'd like to find out which and what the color might mean.

Also, I noticed the part where the black couple are talking in Zion (he was like the Pilot guy or something).  Anyways, I always tuned out during their conversation, but last time I saw the movie, I noticed that his wife's/girlfriend's hair was done in cornrows.  Noticed that the cornrows had been pulled back so that the hairline looked just like the outline of a marijuana leaf.  So now I wonder what these two are talking about.

Yeah, I guess that's my "favorite" sci-fi movie.  But I like a LOT of them.  Was "Bladerunner" the one where the guy goes around killing "replicants" ?  That really was a great movie.

Also "Rollerball" was a great flick to show the potential power of corporate TV.  Sort of like "Max Headroom", which was also great but I'll always believe that it was cancelled due to Corporate pressure. Old Star was great, but Next Gen fans are idiots and should be ashamed.  I liked Eddie Murphy's take on Kirk always f**** the "Green B****".

Kirk had his priorities straight.  I woulda done Spock's babe in a Vulcan half-second.  (Note to Trekkies: If Vulcans don't measure their time in "seconds", keep it to yourself. 1.  Because I don't care.  2.  Because I want to NOT know and 3.  Because I always try to avoid true freaks and weirdos.)

The "Butterfly Effect" was downright stupid and insulting, and easily wins my Worst Sci-Fi Movie in the last decade.  After the first 30 minutes, I loudly and openly ridiculed the movie in the theater, and threw verbal jabs at anyone that "shushed" me.  A movie so bad that I secretly hope for and wait to read in USA Today how anyone connected to that movie comes to some harm or other.  (The only possible redemption for that movie.)

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

I'm not a big fan of reboots, pre-quel, sequel, re-imaginngs, remakes, Hollywood doesnt really have any good ideas anymore but I agree Blade Runner is up there, I also liked the new Blade Runner aka BR 2049. The classic Arnie action movie Total Recall is perhaps better liked a cult favorite compared to the new Total Recall. I was never really a big StarWars fan, I would probably watch stuff like Trek or Stargate or Babylon-5 re-runs casually, Babylon-5 I thought had great writing but I did think the Star Wars movie 'Rogue One' was wrote well, good actors, very enjoyable. I do enjoy some of the Marvel DC stuff but I don't obsess over it, the Nolan film with Joker in the The Dark Knight was excellent and I thought Captain America The Winter Soldier a great movie. In recent years South Korean cinema has become strong, The Host in 2006 was a good Asian monster movie film.
Animations some I enjoy, sometimes I would recommend the classic Japanese animation Akira, some Disney Pixar comicbook stuff like Iron Giant and Wall E were pretty cool.
On tv and classic DVD I liked the silly original Trek, the series Firefly was very good, Dune is good, you have the 1984 Dune movie and tv but do they do the books justice?? I'm not sure? Stargate was entertaining it was first a movie then tv, entertainment whenever I watched it but I do not know enough about the show to say what exact episodes to recommend or what SG spin off was the best. I also liked classic old tv DVDs and screaming of old shows like Outer Limits, Twilight, the classic scifi show was fun. The horro scifi stuff Twin Peaks is also good but its not really scifi, its sometimes drama, sometimes horror, its not really any genre they made a continuation of it in recently years, I would describe it as Crime/Supernatural if anything but with the occasional weirdness of dark scifi, the German tv series Dark is also liked and Delicatessen is another cult hit set in a post apocalyptic world . "The Orville" on Fox is pretty good if you like that quirky odd upbeat humor, its like if  Galaxy Quest became a real tv show.
Movies with a Dystopian Future? Yeah forget the Matrix for a sec its reality, its this global Corona virus and Covid lockdown rule, we're all living in it.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

Some movies that keep popping up in reveiws, some are known box office hits others are lesser know cult hits

50 years ago, Andrei Tarkovsky made the most disturbing sci-fi movie ever
Slow and unsettling, this classic work of Soviet sci-fi will make you reconsider how we relate to each other.
https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/s … nniversary
Science fiction can predict or inspire mankind’s future. But the great Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky had no such aspirations for his adaptation of the equally great Polish novelist Stanisław Lem’s 1961 masterpiece Solaris; he just needed work. His previous movie, Andrei Rublev, played briefly in 1966 before censors shelved it until 1971, and his script for what ultimately became 1975’s The Mirror failed to gain traction in-between. A story as cerebral as Solaris hardly screams potboiler, but 10 million tickets sold can’t be wrong.
Whether or not Tarkovsky cared about how the human race might live in the decades to come, and whether he had any interest in where our technological advancements might take us, Solaris, like any thoroughly-considered science fiction narrative, does make one loose prognostication about our unspecified hereafter. No matter how far we go as a species, life is hard, people are lonely, and nothing can beat the comfort of the bubbles we make for ourselves

‘The Matrix’: THR’s 1999 Review
On March 31, 1999, the Warner Bros. sci-fi film made its U.S. theatrical debut.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ … ew-743651/
A cyber sci-fi blowout of wetware-boggling visual effects and advanced comic book storytelling, Warner Bros.’ The Matrix will open mightily and have a wide-open month to become early 1999’s biggest hit.
Word-of-mouth will be giddy, with young and mature males lining up for a technologically stunning movie that furthers the genre and features crowd-pleasing performances to go with the frequent scenes of gunplay and violence.
Kudos to the writing and directing team of Larry and Andy Wachowski — who debuted impressively with the small-scale, tightly wound Bound — for fashioning a brain-twisting, eye-popping thriller that recalls The Terminator, Total Recall and Stanislaw Lem’s great novel The Futurological Congress.

Why Wall-E is the Best Pixar Movie to Date
The little robot with a big legacy
https://newmediarockstars.com/2015/11/w … ovie-date/
You see, it’s not just a kids’ movie. By dealing with a message widely against humanity and the simple story of a lonely robot, Pixar did a great thing and made the film geared towards everyone and not just kids. There is a lot of heart and feeling that older audiences will pick up on, and plenty of beautiful animation and funny moments to make kids smile. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but Wall-E accomplishes this and more.

Arrival review: Denis Villeneuve's sophisticated sci-fi shows others how it's done. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner star in the drama which features aliens but is all about humanity.
https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/arrival-revie … ne-1585691
In the film, Adams plays linguistics professor Dr Louise Banks, who is recruited by the military when 12 shell-shaped aircraft descend upon Earth and station themselves in numerous, seemingly random locations all around the world. As expected, the ships turn out to contain aliens and Louise is tasked with translating their language so that the government can work out why they are here.

Gattaca at 20: Why it’s still one of the best sci-fi movies around
https://metro.co.uk/2017/10/24/gattaca- … d-7023410/
Today marks 20 years since the release of Gattaca in the US on October 24, 1997.
It’s a clever sci-fi movie starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law that still stands as one of the best of the genre.

Non-Review Review: Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan
https://them0vieblog.com/2013/08/06/non … h-of-khan/
In many respects, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan represents the franchise’s first true “reboot.”
There have been various points in the history of the franchise when the show has undergone a reinvention of some description, a radical shift from what it was into what it would be. The third season of Star Trek: The Next Generation represented such a dramatic update, a shift turn-around from the show’s first troubled two seasons. The third and fifth seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did something similar. Star Trek: Enterprise tried to affect some radical shift, but only managed to accomplish it in the third season. JJ Abrams’ recent summer blockbuster represented its own dramatic alteration to what Star Trek was or could be.
However, The Wrath of Khan represents the show’s first massive shift, the first point at which the franchise effectively evolved into something markedly different from what it had been before.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

Will Mars as a scifi subject be as popular as it was in the 1990s-2020, maybe starting with 90s Total Recall and peaking with Martian 2015 ?

The Mandalorian was an enjoy enjoyable tv show, its like a Western Frontier set in the StarWars universe, StarTrek Prodigy is a kids toon which features a hologram of Captain Janeway in its Animated Series

I will probably continue watching the next bla Superhero Marvel DC thing from Hollywood. However I feel Hollywood hasn't bee the same a while, its been collapsing long before the SJW political agendas or Weinstein scandals or economic down turns. I feel Hollywood has got too formulaic these past years, remake and another re-imaging followed by another reboot and prequel and sequel and remake, its all about pushing a product as much as possible. I feel S.Korea is at the stage where American was once was in its older eras of good writing and risk taking with indie movies. However all that said about remakes I enjoyed 'Captain America Winter Soldier' a lot, 'Logan' is a great movie and I will probably watch TopGun Maverick remake.

Tv shows? I still have this fascination with S.Korean tv and movie, tv Aelliseu deals with some and an event which might be explained by time travel, 'MOUSE' seems interesting, its like a mix between a horror, comedy and dystopia people trying to catch killers, another show 'Doctor Brain' suffered a horrific personal tragedy, he then conducts "brain syncs" with the dead of his family to access their memories for clues.

Calliban wrote:

The Japanese and South Koreans aren't interested in Woke Cultural Marxism.  They are Racial Nationalists.

At Cannes this year a lot of the winners are South Korea

I guess you can have some level of pride or nationalism without hating everyone else, you are friendly and trade with others but that does not mean you must hate your own culture?

Maybe one day S.Korea will make their on films about Mars or even one day in real life land robots there. There are some very unique conditions as to why S.Korean developed such big industries at home and why S.Korean culture and films are growing as an international brand.

Will there ever be another classic era of scifi

Seems DC and Marvel remakes will continue to be a thing, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a new Avatar, a new Transformers Remake, another Jurassic Park World thing.
