Much of the talk about gas core nuclear reactors has been about providing the needed power for various methods of interplanetary transportation but I can’t help but wonder the benefits of such a reactor on earth. With less moving parts because of MHD It has to have a long life and a high degree of reliability, with the high temperatures and pressures I wonder if a mix of fission and fusion could be substantiated . I wonder what the high efficiencies would mean in terms of reducing nuclear waste and prolonging the available supply of nuclear fuel.
Canada supposedly has a 100-200 year supply of uranium I am sure if there was more efforts to search for it they would find a lot more but with GCNR could that become a 1000-2000 year supply. In terms of providing long term power for man kind such breakthroughs would be fantastic. And of course with more power that would mean more energy intensive mining methods would be available on the moon and mars.
