NASA is going to send a list of names to Mars on it's next rover mission.  So if you want your name riding around Mars on a little robot that someone told me is ugly and looks like the junkyard dog of robots (personally I think it's kinda cute big_smile ) you can sign on here

Well, it appears Josh and I are already Mars bound.  You didn't tell us if you signed on to go to Mars with Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Cindy.  Should I take that as a sign that you don't like the junk yard dogs of robots either? smile

Four of my favorite 18th-century philosophers are getting their names sent to Mars as well!  Voltaire would be happy to know that he didn't write _Micromegas_ in vain...

By the way, a photo of the rover was included on the certificate page, to the viewer's left.  I don't know, it's kind of cute as far as robots go...

I know this is going to sound suspiciously like bragging, but, as a long standing member of The Planetary Society, my name has been sitting in The Carl Sagan Memorial Station on the floodplains of Ares Vallis since 1997.

    YEAH, YOU'RE RIGHT!!! It is bragging!! I can't help it ... it's something I'm very proud of!
    I've been a financial member of TPS since I first heard of their existence and have responded to most of their letters begging for donations over the years. I did all this because I think if you really believe in something, it's not good enough to just talk ... you have to actually DO SOMETHING about it!

    I sometimes imagine future natives of Mars putting up a large plaque, rather in the style of the American Vietnam War Memorial, with all the 100,000 names of The Planetary Society members of 1997 inscribed on it.
    If there is an afterlife, I'd be smiling from ear to ear to think that my small contribution was actually recognised by the people of the New World I'd always wanted to see but never could.

What exactly -is- the Carl Sagan Memorial Station?  What's it comprised of?  I've heard of it, but haven't seen photos or illustrations.

It's just what we named the platform on which Sojourner originated. Or what we call Sojourner and Pathfinder together. Carl Sagan had died only a few years earlier (at a pretty young age, for an astronomer), and of all the things he enjoyed most, Mars was one of his favorites.

That's right.
    The great man died on Dec. 20th 1996 at the way-too-young age of 62.

    Pathfinder became The Carl Sagan Memorial Station as a mark of respect.
