The quake that occured in Indonesia did not create a Tsunami luckily as it was we believe a sideways movement Earthquake rather than a vertical one that caused the Boxing day event. What was good for everyone was to see how fast the message got across even without a proper tsunami detection and warning system. The beaches and coasts around the bay of bengal etc where cleared very quickly especially Thailand. The loss of life was due to it happening past midnight local time and a lot of people where killed in there own bedrooms.
But what is even more interesting is that the Earthquake was expected we knew it was going to happen we just could not know the exact date. The trouble is that we believe that there will be another sooner rather than later. And this one may cause the water movement that we fear.

Treb, I just hope for their sake of course that another earthquake doesn't strike. But for OUR sake I hope one (especially of a high magnitude) doesn't occur on the 4th of July, or the 5th. Those rumors that perhaps the U.S. is planting bombs on the ocean floor and detonating them to get at the Muslims population would start up again. :-\

What rumors? That's a pretty crazy rumor to try to get someone to believe. The most powerful nuclear weapons ever created don't even approach the tiniest fraction of the raw power released on the Boxing Day earthquake. Powerful as H-bombs may be, a few dozen pounds of fusing deuterium cannot possibly come near the power of billions and billions of tons of crunching, grinding bedrock. Besides, sure seems like one heck of a waste of a bomb. :;):

Mad Grad Student, against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain.
I've heard about those rumors too. Basically they occur because conspiracy theories run amok in certain parts of the third world - every random event is caused by some sinister bunch of people, generally working at the behest of the US, Israel, or UN. It's related to the black helicopter-New World Order types in the US... I suppose it's witch hunt hysteria dressed up in modern clothing. The crops caught disease because witches cast evil magic spells; earthquakes in the Indian Ocean are obviously caused by secret US agents blowing up nukes.
I suppose in a few centuries we'll have people on Mars posting messages that their terraforming efforts are part of a secret plan from the old planet to take Mars away from them, or something. If we ever meet up with aliens, I'd like to ask them if they have paranoid conspiracists dreaming up weird explanations for mundane but rare things, like believing that supernova are caused by rogue government officials blowing up stars for some mysterious, nefarious purpose.

Australia To Build Tsunami Warning System
Australia is surrounded by 8,000 kilometres of active tectonic plate boundary capable of generating tsunamis with the potential to reach our coastline within two to four hours. One-third of the earthquakes worldwide occur along these boundaries
The December 26 catastrophe that killed about 217,000 people on Indian Ocean coastlines is tragic in that some warning systems could have saved lifes but only if they have under ground bunkers to protect them as the waves go crashing over there heads.
IMO lots more than a warning sytem is needed but it is a start.

*That earthquake left a 620-mile long rupture plane on the ocean floor. 1000 km. ::shakes head:: The study is from ENS/CNRS, a research institute in Paris. They've used "60 Global Positioning" system. Study focused on southeast Asia.
They're reporting small but "significant" continued seismic jumps which are clearly detectable...including out to 3000+ km from the quake's epicenter.
Vulnerability of region mentioned. I'd say.

I got two things to get off my chest here.
1: The people who live in the coast of Indonesia keep getting warned. There is going to be another Earthquake. Another. So why are they still there? You guys already had two. Now get your ass of that area and go inland. If there is another Tsunami. Don't complain. You got warned.
2: Money? Alot of the money that was given by people have been wasted. People are still living like they did in January. Maybe we shouldn't have been so genorus. Then the Government wouldn't steal the small amount of money they have.

Actually I can answer that the majority of the people live at the coast as the inland is a miserable jungle full of malaria and other nasty things. There is also a severe shortage of farmland which is why fishing is a lot more important to them than is the global averadge.

Can't they go into the Urban Cities? If they could the increased work force could be beneficial to their country.

I always thought it was the weapon platform on the Atlantis that did that?
Seriously though when the hell are we going to get of our buts and install an early warning system for Tsunami? If an Alarm is as good as a bouy displaced from its mooring anchor by the energy of a tidal wave, why dont we have them out there?
We can sit there as security council members and claim to be doing what is right, but its little more than a bunch of factional warlords with veto over the rule of the majority when we dont.

The problem for a warning system is not the detection of the Tsunami it is how do you actually give the alarm to the populace. Most pacific and indian ocean nations are poor borderline poverty stricken and cannot afford televisions and radios we would take for granted. Any system of public warning sirens would need a reasonably constant maintenance rota as well as an assured power supply all of which are not in place.
I wish it was a simple answer but in this case for the likes of Indonesia to be effective will take a lot of work and we are not just talking Indonesia here are we. There is the whole african coast as well as mainland Asia/India to do as well.

So why dont we require all the privately owned sattelites to carry a Tsunami Early Warning Component as a legal requirement the way we require a black box flight recorder on airplanes. That way they can all get global coverage and transmit Tsunami Warnings on Radio channels.

Actually for the country it is going and its ease of building and maintenance and more importantly its comfort this design is a dream for many people in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. If you actually look at the features you will see why. It is raised off the ground on Concrete blocks as such it will not be eaten by the insects living on the ground or rot in the high tempature and humidity enviroment. The high pitched roof allows water to run off quickly and even better be collected and since it will be made of plastic it will not rot and especially not leak. The raised platform allows air to circulate as well as the batten type walls so allowing cooling to occur in an enviroment with no electrical air conditioning. If we could put solar panels in they would have the ultimate luxury electricity.

Make the system solar powered, since it only takes minimal power to be in monitoring mode. Add some batteries for the high current for the siren and tie it back into a satelite digital dish to recieve the command to alarm. Place these on poles just say a half mile inland so as to keep from being wiped out, on any such events.

Hotels baulk at signal receiver cost; No takers for tsunami early warning system
Not a single hotel in tsunami-prone Phuket province has hooked up with the tsunami early warning system. Provincial authorities have met local hoteliers twice, urging them to install satellite signal receivers so they can get the early warning signal directly from the Nonthaburi-based National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC), which relays the warning via the satellite.
So far, no hotel has installed the equipment.
The province has 19 tsunami early-warning towers.
Quake triggers tsunami in Solomon Islands
A massive undersea earthquake sent a tsunami crashing into the South Pacific nation of Solomon Islands on Monday, destroying at least one town and leaving at least four people missing, officials said.
The Pacific region, from Australia to Hawaii, went on high alert for several hours after the magnitude-8 quake struck between the islands of Bougainville and New Georgia, though officials canceled a region-wide tsunami warning after the danger period passed.reports indicated water had risen 20 meters (66 feet) higher than normal high-tide levels.
The U.S. Geological Center said the magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck about 10 kilometers (6 miles) beneath the sea floor about 350 kilometers (215 miles) northwest of the Solomons capital of Honiara at 7:39 a.m. (20:39 GMT Sunday). It later upgraded the strength to magnitude to 8.0.
