I have applied the "unread topics mod" to the forum. It is not designed to "work" with the several mods we already have (such as the Calendar and Profile mods), but looking at the code I saw no significant changes that had to be made to get it to "work."
But, we'll need to do some test casing tomorrow to make sure everything is okay. Hand editing (well, copy+pasting) thousands of line of code can introduce significant mistakes (if you were here a minute ago you might have noticed).
There is a little orange icon on all posts in a thread now. If you click on that little icon, it will set that topic as "unread" to that point on. Think of it sort of as a bookmark. Click your last post in a thread, and you can come back there later on (by clicking on the same icon in the forums). All posts now, will be, intuitively, unread until you actually read them (assuming all is well with the modification, let me tell you, it was huge, half of our phpBB install is now a mod of sorts).
Let me know guys. And you know my email and PM, so shoot me one if anything goes bad today/tomorrow, and I'll be sure to fix it ASAP.
Consider yourselves my labrats.
edit: okay, I have found one bug and squashed it so far, but there seems to be another semi-annoying buy relating to daylight savings time, probably doesn't affect overseas users, but it does the locals. A simple fix is adding one hour to your time in your profile for now.

*Me grudgingly start re-reading ALL posts on New Mars, in order to 'de-orangeify' that icon, grrrr...*

All posts are unread for you?
If so it would be a simple matter of clicking "mark all posts read" in the given forums. It wasn't like that for me, though, and I just logged in with my alternate name, and only recent topics were unread... hehe, hope you were exaggerating.

Logging out and logging back in won't affect it.
It is also worth noting that Guest users' cookies will also give them this "unread post" functionality. Unfortunately it could result in more lurking, but as far as I can tell, activity actually goes up when posters see topics they have not read. In fact, that's why the server probably crashed before, I had set the session length to a day (so for all intents unread topics would stay unread), but we got really busy. Our biggest day was the same day that the SQL server crashed. And it was probably directly related to users' ability to see which posts they had and had not read.

I was kidding! " " means I kid, yes?
was just that your explanation sounded a bit like all posts would be orange and you had to read them to 'deorangeify' them...

All new posts will be.
But yeah, I kinda knew you were kidding. Still, discombobulated over here about personal life things...
Anyway, you have that "mark unread" button in every forum, so after you finish reading your favorite threads, just click it so the other threads you're not particularly interested in go away.
Things seem to be working okay, anyone let me know if any problems arise.

I have one little tweak to suggest... Now one can click 'new posts since last visit'
Sometimes I click and see there's nothing new I'm interested in (it happens! )
then it would be nice to mark that list as read... but there's no mark all read thingy.
Not sure it's possible, though.

Dangit. Sorry for the php stuff. Wanted to add TeX support, should be trivial, but I keep mucking up the path (well, the path is correct, but whatever, heh). I'll do it later when no one is around to be annoyed by the errors. Again, sorry.
The [tex]tex[/tex] tag won't work until I set it up properly. Just have to be patient.

Find a home, if you think it fits:
(And name it... I don't do names well)
My Mars, distant Mars!
I call to that great empty sky of night,
Words nearing where I may never tread.
My Mars,
Ruby lipped lover lounging
In pale sanguine umber skin
Light and lithe in dance
Among those shifting glittering incandescent sands
Soft wailing lost in moonbeams
And the long empty space between-
Mere distance measured in miles in millions,
No further than a dream.

you may find the name and place I put it somewhat paradoxical.

Who will control the water, the oil, the patnum? Will Multhus be proven right?
I think it could be cool if the games were mars related. Perhaps the odd game that is space related. However, Josh is doing a lot of work and I don’t think an arcade is a priority and I don’t know if we have the bandwidth. Perhaps if we had another admin working on it we could consider it.
P.S. I play my arcade game here:

We'd absolutely have the bandwidth, but I'm doing functional modifications, not entertaining modifications. Every addition is designed to enhance useablity, and I think an "arcade" would depreciate the quality of posts here and detract from Mars and space related discussion in general.

Oh, I noticed something you guys might not have noticed. But if you select text in the reply box, and then click on a tag, it'll automatically set the tag at the beginning and end of the selection. Pretty cool, I never noticed that. Hmm, this paragraph has "notice" quite a bit, also, did you notice that too? Heh.
