Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

All I'm doing is putting up some empty 'coathangers', in a very random way, to boot...

idea behind this is that it's probably more tempting that way for people to try and edit existing stuff, than create new pages by themselves....
Then again, it looks pretty empty that way...

Keep it up Rxke, you're doing a great job smile.

I concur.

Empty coathangers are a terrific idea since edits are easier than thinking up new pages.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

There's a LOT functionality missing on a 'new' Wiki, it seems. for instance, I halfheartedly imported some helppages from the 'real wikipedia,' but one should expect those pages already be there when installing one from scratch, no?

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

Nah, they're not there by default. And it seems the math thing will have to wait a bit. Everything compiles and works fine (surprisingly our host has Ocaml), but it still claims our dependencies are not up to par. There seems to be a solution, but I don't see a plugin for MediaWiki.

BTW, Rxke, nice job so far, you might want to look in to using templates. big_smile

I guess, I’ll have to use images in the short term. Do you guys know if there is a way to upload them or do I have to link them to external images?

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

I enabled uploads. Just make sure the content is free to use, though I'm sure equations and the like fall under that category.

Here's a link to the upload page: http://www.newmars.com/wiki/index.php/Special:Upload

what a job!

BTW, just got a mail delivery failure for Dr. Levin, I wanted to paraphraze his work, (re: the Viking lifescience experiments) but he asks to contact the author (him, duh) for permission, but the contactadress is dead.

Well done John, and I don't see the dupe users you're talking about, so it's all good.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

The link to the wiki works fine for me, and I don't see anything wrong with the database, so I dunno what happened for you Bill.

How many tech support staff does it take to change a light bulb?
'My light bulb is working fine and I have the same type of light bulb.' smile

Anyway...

Will the wiki be intergrated into the forum? That is will the database tie auto link terms in a post to the wiki? If you have ever used trillian then you know how wonderful such a function is.

If someone has never met a term you use they follow the link...

That is an awsome idea and should be no problem. All we need is a custom bbp code for wki links.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

You guys will have to forgive me on this one. I am at dooly's and don't have a spell check. I just did a whole buch of pages for all the links to my page:
http://www.newmars.com/wiki/index.php/Orbital_plane
and none of them are spell checked. I know not all of them are mars related but I am think that the more pages we have the more pages we have for search engines to index and on these pages we can try to give it a newmars flavor by using mars related examples or perhaps insert pomes or story exerts written by our members. Also it is more pages people can find will doing google searches which will hopfully lead people back to new mars.

Will that make it automatic for keywords? Like if I type 'Zubrin' or 'Ares' or 'Project Orion' they get underlined without my interaction?

Or course I don't mind. smile  I expect what I write to be edited to death. That is the idea of a wiki. Everyone keeps working on it and making it better and better. I was woried other people might mind if I create too much editing work for them. However, I think if we keep working on it in differernt directions it will eventually come together.

Well, you might not want it automatic because it might not link to the right page or the links might distract the reader. Rather what you would do is type something linke this [wiki]Zubrin[/wiki] and it would take you to the Zubrin page of the wiki.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

John,
Nice stuff, I did some editing, but there's still stuff I think is wrong, but being non-native English, it's sometimes hard to remember how something in maths is written in other languages...
I added some internal links, too, Wiki is now getting pages with several internal-working!-links! big_smile

BTW: AmE or BrE?

Centre or center of the Earth? Color or colour etc...

Tea or Coke?  lol
