Ahh, this is why I get for trying to satisify everyone.
But really, all you guys have given me some very useful ideas, and if it wasn't for them I may not have implemented what I have done with it. So don't worry about it. But hopefully now we're at some crossroads where users are happy with what usergroups represent.
Just know, that usergroups are so small time.
The real thing, the REAL thing, is the wiki.
Yes, your forum username and password work there.
Now, I am off until this evening!

Oh good God, where's this gonna go.

Take the whole weekend off, you've earned it.

And while you're off for the weekend, C.C. undoubtedly will fill up the Wiki with revolutionary visions, MWUAHAHAHA!

Heheh, the old wiki, usemod, was underutilized, but it was pretty crappy, you couldn't even customize the look or anything. I am slightly disappointed no one has jumped the gun and started adding content, but I blame that on the front page being the default unedited page.

What does one do with a "wiki"?
Offline
fill it.
But I'm not sure how the peer-reviewing will work here ...
And then: has this some kind of 'official' status, i.e. must the content be MarsDirect stuff, or can anyone just add what she/he/it want?
Questions, questions...
Offline
fill it? To what purpose?

Rxke, it's register only, so only forum members can edit it, and I don't think forum members want to look naughty editing the wiki in a bad way (wiki's are presistant, so every edit done can be seen in the history), ah, the wonderful thing about communities, members treat each other relatively nicely otherwise they look like jerks, even two of our most unfriendly posters to one another seem to be getting their act together (not saying who, and don't speculate here, I'm just observing out loud).
clark, heh, I showed it to you first and your was something like "whoa cool," so you're telling me that was like "whoa cool, wtf is Josh about?" I see how it is.
A wiki is a site that lets you arbitrarily add and edit content. I was going to, later on, suggest that you add content from your Martian Chronicles usergroup to the wiki, as in, say, Creative Content or something. You could have a whole section for yourself with your writings there.
Once the front page is up and it looks nice and it directs you to stub pages, I am sure people will contribute, if not from NewMars, new users from outside of NewMars.

Rxke, think marginally Mars related as the norm. A bio page, for example, wouldn't have to be Mars related, but if you were putting up poems, it would be nice if they had some relation to Mars. This isn't an official Mars Society Wiki per se, but maybe one day, once it has a lot of content, it could be.

Bit of unsolicited advice, "Every great play needs a director."
I know you have this whole "anarchy rules" kick, and I'm on board with the fundamental precepts of such thinking, but like everything, there is a time and a place.
I think it is a cool idea, but I am a bit inhibited because I see nothing but blank pages, and almost no direction on what to do, or where to go.
There is no coherency to the project. Not complaining, just observing.
If it is a community endeavor, how is the community represented? How is it made relevant to the people here?
Maybe you need to find someone willing to help build some bones into the thing, to help others understand where they can direct their energy to flesh it out.
And no, I am not volunteering.

Oh, I absolutely agree, which is why I said I was "blaming the lack of content on the main page." People don't know what the heck to do, and I need to set some page guidelines, and stuff. I wasn't going to "introduce" the wiki until later, but I let the cat out of the bag. I mean, seriously, usergroups? Tee hee. A wiki can be far far greater than any small circle of writers or whatever ever thought about being. Adrian had the right idea initially, but the software wasn't up to it. People were contributing, though. We had something like 100 pages. A lot were by me, and my pet projects, but they were there. Heh, I stopped editing it when I learned Perl to install a table/HTML modification to the software (having written the mod), and http://www.newmars.com/forums/viewtopic … 517]Adrian didn't implement it. That little bugger.

Agree. Put something, anything up for starters. If only a template article and subsections. Then it's just a matter of filling in the blanks...
Now no-one knows what kind of format will be used etc...

Stuff to add?
A page on the VSE;
A page on Mars Direct;
Mars facts;
Mars related links (Is Oliver Morton still blogging Mars?)
By the way, the link to the wiki won't work (as of this post)
= = =
New Mars probably should get a new home page as well. See Josh, its like pulling a thread on a sweater.

If we use Wikipedia stuff, we'll have to change the licensing arrangement to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: … nse]GNUFDL rather than Creative Commons' Attribute licenses which is currently on there (I personally think the attribute license is far cleaner than GNUFDL, and Zubrin and others with a Libertarian mindset would probably prefer it). This is kind of important. Don't want to step on toes.
The link to the wiki works fine for me, and I don't see anything wrong with the database, so I dunno what happened for you Bill.
I'm going to set a nice front page up, but like I said, no time for that at the momment (been popping by ocassionally this weekend). I mean, anyone can jump in and go for it, obviously (which was what I was kinda hoping for, mawh), but yeah.
And the front page, we might change it to WordPress, what do you think?

And as we said: we really need a 'scaffold,' to know how things will be organized, heehee..

Is that as robust re: peer-reviewed editing as the Wiki-engine? (Never heard about WordPress 'till now, looks good, but IS it good?)

I wish I new about the wikki before. I may of tried to incorporate more of my post material into it. What should be in the wikki? I wonder because there are so many good wikki’s out there.

Okayay.
I started desecrating the wiki, or nobody else will have a try.
Nothing much, just some lame 'yeah, we know that already' stuff, but one has to begin somewhere, no?
(EDIT:) Oops, I see Bill one-upped me. Nice one, Bill, but it's a bit hidden, no?
Which leads to the first problem: both Bill and I made an entry for Robert Zubrin (whaddayasay, fanboys, we?)
How to clean up the mess?
