Re: Scientists Behaving Badly?

For a bunch of scientists with the aim to ensure a species survival this is sure what I refer to as a major S*** up.

http://www.livescience.com/environment/ … Scientists mistake nearly makes fish extinct

The worst thing about this is the scientists blithely saying sorry we made a mistake. Wiping the majority of the adults out has put this fish into a severe shortage of active genetic material. This is almost as bad as extinction.

*Hi Grypd.  Yeah, I saw that article.

If science in general goes the way of medicine and its practitioners, we are in a bit (at least) of trouble.

Wanting to do as little as possible for as much money as possible; drinking and even doing drugs on the job (haven't we all heard of a doctor passing out during surgery at some point, because he/she was so "loaded"?), etc., etc.

There's too much laziness and unwillingness to be held accountable, much less BE responsible, nowadays.

Maybe the older generations build only for the upcoming generations to screw it all up.  Wouldn't that be the ultimate irony?

And yes, these half-assed "apologies."  Give me a break.

Referring back to medicine (and medical science), I recall a pathologist whom I worked for at the beginning of my career (mid-1980s).  He was very unhappy with the latest batch of graduated M.D.'s, saying "this" generation was very different from folks in his generation (he was 65 at that time); more careless, callous/indifferent towards patients, greedy and unscrupulous, etc.  Ethics and standards going downhill, in other words.  Yes, I recall his being troubled *then* about the future of medicine and medical science.

Hopefully it'll all get better before it gets even worse.  But I rather doubt it.
