http://www.spacedaily.com/news/lunar-05n.html]James Lovell(able) in the news again
*I can't believe it's been 10 years since the Ron Howard movie came out. Dang. I didn't know James Lovell had a bit part in the film! And I've seen it at least half a dozen times, and originally on the Big Screen. :hm: Better get my eyes checked.
Anywho, he'd wanted Kevin Costner to portray him. Prior to (just now) finding this out, I've also seen a resemblance in appearance between Lovell (in his younger days) and Costner. But I'm glad Tom Hanks won the role (much better actor than Costner).
Lovell's association with Hanks continues. One of Lovell's prized possessions is a 20-by-8 mural behind the main bar at Lovells of Lake Forest, the restaurant he and his family operate in Lake Forest, Ill. "Steeds of Apollo" by artist Luman Winter depicts the classic myth of Apollo, whose mission was to pull the sun across the sky.
The mural was commissioned in 1969 by the St. Regis Hotel in New York, and the Apollo 13 crew asked Winter to do the official insignia for their uniform patch. The mural dropped out of sight when the St. Regis was refurbished -- and Hanks found it at an art auction in 1994.
"He bought it and sent it to us," said Lovell, "and now it's on display in the restaurant."
That's cool.
To this day, Lovell acknowledges that his inability to touch down on the moon remains a major disappointment.
"Oh, yeah," he said. "I look at it and kind of figure, 'Gee, I was that close to it twice and never landed.'"
I can only imagine. :-\

A safe haven of luck and not of design. The fact that no other craft has ever had this capability should say something loud and clear for when we go to mars.
Have seen the show and did enjoy watching the review of history.

P.S.: When my husband and I went to see the movie when it opened at the theater, it was packed. We were afraid we wouldn't be able to find 2 seats together, so as to sit next to one another. We had to sit in the very front row. The audience was also unusually hushed and still throughout the entire film. The public still has a yearning for space. Too bad we aren't actually doing something about it (other than the constant and tired round and round in LEO crapola).

*Will put this here, rather than start a new thread.
It's about time they were honored. :-\ Gee whiz. Why not immediately after the mission? Or, at the very latest, after the 1995 movie? Better late than never, I suppose.
