An article was already started called airborne observatory which focus more on the astronomical applications of NEAR space. This discussion is created to discus the military and commercial uses of this space. Near space includes the regain from 50 thousand kilometers to 500 thousand kilometers and can be occupied by many vehicles including rockets balloons and gliders. The military is considering using this region for surveillance but says such applications could take a decade to develop. There is concern that such balloons could be big targets and difficult to defend against a country possessing sophisticated SAMs. I am left to wonder what if instead of a few big balloons a swarm of little balloons was used to form a giant interferometer. With advances in image processing and adaptive optics how clear an image could such a swarm of balloons give. If such a swarm of small balloons could be continuously launched from the ground the balloons would occupy many altitude levels and perhaps clear 3-D images of the ground could be obtained.
