Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americ … .stm]Robot Soldiers

It seems that they have developed these "robots" to do the really dangerous street sweeping in Iraq. How long will it be before they can be controlled far away from the war zone ie in Siego Garcia. Or how long before they put ones which are not a development of a bomb disposal robot and are infact a pure purpose "Terminator".

The Marines have something like this as well. It's not a new concept, the military has been thinking along those lines for at least 10 years or so.

Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

Not to mention there was a movie on robotics called I think Johny 5 alive but thats another topic.
I find that the military has develope robotics to this level but that Nasa languesses in the past wishing that it had something that could fix the Hubble with. But in the same token to make the Moon or Mars beyound work we will need simular technology in robotics.
All that it needs now is a Freind or foe Identifier and a gun to make a modern foot soldier.

Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

Well, I'm not overly optimistic (is that the right word to describe advances in killing people?) about the prospects of robot infantry in the near future, but we could have robot/remote mini-tanks (compact car size) in short order. Such a vehicle could be well suited to urban warfare operations, drive them in, clear an area, look around with IR, radar etc. for sniper positions, mines and the like and establish a defensible perimeter before bringing in troops.

Small anti-personnell helicopters could also be useful in the same sort of settings.

But such devices still have to complement the grunts, not replace them. A robot is no substitute for people on the scene, as we Marsies can surely attest.  big_smile

The movie was called short circuit. I saw it in elementary school and science at that time I haven’t seen as many movies I still remember the name very well. I also had the computer game once for the commodore 64. That takes me back a little. How old are you space nut?

As for the military applications I agree with cobra. Anyway, terminator I am sure could still be taken out by a RPG so robots won’t rule the world for a while. Was it Leonardo devinci or someone else that said technology is an extension of the body. I conclude by this the stronger are technology the stronger are people. Forget the fact the modern coach potato cannot Carrie the weight of a Sherpa in the high Himalayas. Then again neither can most mountaineers.

Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

What must be remembered is this a very quick conversion of a robot designed for completely another purpose. To make it function I assume they have increased its speed at the expense of increasing the batteries and cost. And then again look at it is small and if it is the size of the British version called the wheelbarrow then it will be a very hard target as it size and speed will make it a very hard target to hit. It will also be a very tough target able to survive the effect of near misses.

It is the principle of making these machines and it will simply now give those people working on them a legitimacy for the next more lethal purpose made device.

Right now the army has to be controlled by people. I assume human operators would identify targets from there array of cameras. Thus it is still a peoples army and any authority must must as a minimum keep the army happy to maintain power. Even a terminator could not function without the proper supply line. Until nano technology really becomes productive people can still cut off the supply lines of an AI army with planes and missiles. As long as all the AI has the proper security and the proper human overrides an AI army can’t ever become take over the world. As for one segment inflicting control and segment over another group of people that has happened thought history and  thus the threats aren’t the technology but the tendencies of the worst of human kind. The prospect should be looked at in terms of the benefits it will bring to the western way of life. As for foreign operations, the technology can help to insure a much lower degree of civilian casualties.

Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

We already have Predators which have been armed with ordinance. But though it has been technically possible for a combat ground vehicle to be automated and controlled by teleprescence there seems to have been a reluctance to do so.

It was this I refered to by the principle of the thing.

Now that they have started to operate these machines it will increase the status of the other projects that have been going on. Soon purpose built and more effective devices will appear in the arsenal of the US and probably any other state that can afford them. They may be teleprescence but this is only due to the very poor status AI has at the moment.

Of course from a Robotic enthusiasts view it really is a good thing as it will only increase the science which like many things discovered in War where later put to more peace time purposes.

For anyone who is interested the Batteries on the SWORDS program armed bomb disposal robots only have a charge of 4 hours. Pity as I would really love a robot with one that could last over 14

Unmanned aerial vehicles make more sense than unmanned ground vehicles right now.  I think we will see much more extensive use of UAVs before robots become common on the ground.

Just make it bigger and add an engine.

Interesting though telerobotic I wonder how much it has gained from the Carnegie Mellon entry into the DARPA grand challenge. A very interesting design still though especially those missile pods probably a tow derivative.

And another interesting side show. A major corporation planning to develop and build a range of battlefield energy based weapons.

Still though it is an early stage of Robots coming to the battlefield it is very "terminatorish".

It looks too small to be a TOW derivative, I suspect they're launchers for smoke canisters.

Though I don't see any reason why you couldn't just bolt a big bracket on it to mount a TOW or some other anti-armor missile. It might make it too tall though and raise the center of gravity too much. Probably not worth much on its side.  :hm:

Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

Not those 8 small tubes they are definitly grenade/smoke launchers but if you look to the front likely those two boxes hold LAW derivative missiles for anti armor use or something similar. They also seem to have a heavy machine gun for anti personal use.

Still it would be reasonably easy to have side launched heavier missiles. And if set lower on the frame it would increase stability.

edit Grypd 14/02/2005

Sorry Cobra really meant to say LAW not TOW but there is still likely plans to have those carried by this Robot.

Hmm, the gun looks (vaguely) like an M249, though I could be mistaken. If that's the case those two boxes still look too small for a LAW, to me anyway. Not that a low-res CG model is definitive.    ???

But TOW or LAW, I'm sure there are plans to outfit the unit with anti-armor missiles of some sort. Woe to the Third World conscript who takes an outdated Soviet tank up against a remote control truck.   :hm:

Re: Robot Soldiers - "Terminators" are here?

TB2 is a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned combat aerial vehicle UCAV its Primary users Turkey, Ukraine

Bayraktar Drone Flies Through Russian Su-27 Jet Wash
https://funker530.com/video/bayraktar-d … -jet-wash/

Footage recorded by a Ukrainian TB2 Bayraktar drone over the Black Sea shows an incident in which a Russian Su-27 combat jet intentionally disrupts the flight path of the drone with its wake turbulence, commonly referred to as jetwash.

It's not immediately clear why the drone wasn't shot down. It's possible the Russian pilot wasn't able to distinguish its nation of origin as Turkey flies their own Bayraktar drones over the Black Sea. It's also possible the aircraft were in international airspace and not worth the geopolitical fallout of engaging it.

Ethiopian forces have reportedly been using the TB2 against the TPLF in the Tigray War. Satellite images have shown TB2 drones in Harar Meda airbase, and debris of MAM-L guided munition have been found in Tigray. On 7 January 2022, a drone strike killed nearly 60 civilians and injured dozens more in a camp of internally displaced people in Dedebit in Tigray; the missile used was a MAM-L exclusively used with the TB2 drone.
