Re: Happy 70th Birthday Elvis!

*Yep.  Not his biggest fan by any means, but can't help loving that guy.  My mother and aunt visited Graceland in the mid-90s.  They said Elvis was a natural blonde (saw a photo at Graceland of him as an adult, with his natural hair color), and his hair was later dyed dark.  I still find that hard to believe, though.  :hm:  Both my parents were Elvis fans, in their younger days.

I remember a winter afternoon at my cousin's house, the year before Elvis died; I was 11 and the local TV station was playing Jailhouse Rock.  He came swinging around that pole with those tight black jeans on, doing his thing, and wow was I dazzled; immediately caught up in a spell.  It's the first time I'd ever looked at a man.

He was a generous soul, never forgot his roots, amazingly humble despite his mind-boggling phenomenal status.   Lots of things to love about Elvis.

My husband and I watched "Girls! Girls! Girls!" and "G.I. Blues" last night; American Movie Classics always honors his birthday with a run of his films.  There'll be another run of his films again tonight on AMC.  Unfortunately I can't recall the name of the one film I think Elvis truly deserved acting kudos in; it was a serious film -- a western.  He played the role of a cowboy really well.

Hard to believe he'd be old now.  :-\  Seems he should always be young and vibrant, like he is in those movies.

Re: Happy 70th Birthday Elvis!

Yeah, I've been an Elvis fan for a long time now, though some of his acting and the scripts of some of his movies tend to make me wince with embarrassment on his behalf! He often looked like he couldn't really believe he was doing some of that stuff.
                                               big_smile
The movie you're trying to remember may be "Flaming Star"(?), but I've never actually seen it myself. Don't know why - I think I've seen just about everything else he did on film.
He did get critical acclaim for his role in "King Creole", which had a kind of "Blackboard Jungle" feel to it and dealt with the seamier side of life. It was only later, of course, that his roles were all sanitised and 'Disney-fied' to fit in with a more wholesome family-entertainment style.
I guess you can't stay a rebellious mixed-up kid forever!

There are so many flaws in the Presley legend that you don't need to look too hard to find plenty of them but, when all's said and done, he was one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century and I still find myself turning the radio up when they play his songs.
It's not difficult to see what the girls saw in him; those looks and that voice. And I suspect the attraction for the boys was an underlying wish to be like him - so good-looking, so talented, so cool .. so different compared to our own boring klutzy lives!

Yep. Long live the King .. forever young!

*Hiya Shaun.  I know what you mean.  :-\  Unfortunately sometimes his (seeming) discomfort is translated onto the screen.  But heck, it's still Oscar-worthy I suppose, compared to how well I'd do in front of a camera.   But yes, I nearly cringe occasionally when he comes close to crossing his eyes in a "hyperfun" moment.

Yes, that's it.  smile  I checked with Amazon.com.  An editorial review says:

Definitely a contender for the underwhelming title of Best Elvis Movie, this handsomely shot Western actually makes Elvis act, rather than coast on his personality. (As though to underscore the point, the two obligatory songs are dispensed with under the opening credits and in the first scene.) Don Siegel was probably the best director the King ever worked with, and he draws a quietly smoldering performance from Elvis, who was still undeniably raw.

It's true -- he actually *does* act and this film isn't merely a vehicle for his personality.  It stands out in my mind, anyway.

I guess you can't stay a rebellious mixed-up kid forever!

What??  You mean when I turn 40 I'll have to...oh...hahaha, never mind.   roll

  "Blue Hawaii" is currently playing.  Really enjoy the role of Angela Lansbury as his mother -- and as snob extraordinnaire.   :;):

Yes, I suppose.  But fun in their own way; definitely a perk up for this cold, cloudy January weather -- like being invited to a party complete with likeable guests and no one's too drunk.  -laugh-  I also love the costumes, especially those of the gals; am always mentally picking out what I'd wear, as I simply love all things 60s.

Now "Mama" is asking for "some sugar" from "Chadwick" so I'd better go rejoin the party...
