Re: a carbon beryllium compound or carbon lithium comp

Well, can one be made with enough tensile streangth? Remember it would be lighter.

Re: a carbon beryllium compound or carbon lithium comp

What would the micro structure be? Lithium is useless because it can only form one bond. Beryllium can form two bonds so maybe if the bonds are oriented along the length of the tube it would be useful. How does the strength of a beryllium-carbon bond compare to a carbon-carbon bond? Look up a table of bond strenghts. Chemistry wise I think there is a big problem because thermal equilibrium is a desorbed state so I don’t know if you can count on all Be bounds being along the length of the tube and what temperature you would need to keep the tube at so they would stay oriented properly. Moreover since this is not a natural thermodynamic equilibrium you would have to assemble the structure element by element. That is possible but I don’t think we have the technology yet to do this on the required scale.

I couldn’t find a table of bond strengths but maybe it can be estimated from the bond energy.

A Be-C bond isn't going to be stable enough to make anything out of. It would probobly be ruined by exposure to air rapidly... oh and be pretty toxic.

Re: a carbon beryllium compound or carbon lithium comp

what about a lithium, Be, C bond? All three of them used together is that possible?

Bonds are only between two attoms.

Maybe an entry-level college chemistry textbook might be good for you Errorist, they are pretty short if you skip the math and electronic configuration stuff.

Chemistry is an integral part of the art of space travel, and you would be much better informed and able to shape your ideas if you gained some understanding of the microscale universe.

For instance, you would know that a metal-nonmetal covalent bond, like the one between Be and C that you propose, would be very unstable if it were practical to make the bond at all.

Re: a carbon beryllium compound or carbon lithium comp

Chemistry is by far the most important and usefull science IMO.  Practicly every advancment that has made our current society possible is rooted in chemistry.  Practicly everything you eat, touch, wear, or use is built on a foundation of chemistry.  Without it, we wouldn't have got out of the stone ages, quite literaly!

Disclaimer: I am currently working on my BS in chemistry, so I am a little biased.  smile
