It really does not say anything new, most of what was said there has already been discussed fully by people on these forums.
The article was a rather weak attempt as a wake up call to warn the USA that its lead in space is not large enough to rest on there laurels and to ignore the up and coming Europeans and China. But the space enthusiasts on this forum have already warned this but I doubt if any politician was really listening. In the future either China or Europe will do something that shows they are Major powers in space and that the USA is now in second place. It does not matter what this is either a manned attempt at Mars or Lunar landing but it will wake the USA up. Then the space race will be on again as the USA cannot afford to lose in being the master of space.

I agree: What a bloody shame another "Vietnamn" had to be started just when we could have argued that available government funding was at least feasible for a "Mars First" expedition. Now, who's first in the day-to-day human space transportion and supply operational activities? Certainly not the U.S. The so-called missle defense system reminds me of what we were doing with Nike antimissile-missile systems back in the 1950s, before cruise missles and/or container bombs were feasible. What's going on, terrorwise, wasn't inevitable during the Clinton administration--what a difference four short years make! Hopefully, not irreversible, but after another four such years. . . ?

NASA has way more things done in the past. Chinese still have much work to do, before they can push out their new designs but there might be a plan to do something big by the Olympics 08' such as an updated Shenzhou as Aldrin thought
going in orbit but not landing
or maybe sending robotics to explore the Moon
They still have lots of work to do before they can make it happen but the China economy and aeropsace industry is growing fast
