Re: Lets play. . . - Identify these song lyrics

Song and artist. Covers accepted.

I mighta joined the merchant marine,
if I hadn't learned how to sing;

On top of all that, I got married too early,
cost me much more than a ring.

I propose that whoever first answers correctly gets to post the next challenge.

After all the bad news in the world, I feel a need to lighten up a little. . .

Why does this remind me of mundaka?

Got a caribbean soul I can barely control
And some texas hidden here in my heart

anyway, your turn. . .

*My father used to sing little jingles/songs like that all the time.  I assumed he picked them up over his lifetime, but now I wonder if a lot of it wasn't during his Korean War service.  This sounds very familiar.  My guess for "author" would be Walton Walker...I remember my dad talking about him.  smile

Re: Lets play. . . - Identify these song lyrics

I have long thought these lyrics offer a good place to start riffing from. . .

Never got around to it, though.

http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/throwing.html]Throwing Stones

Picture a bright blue ball, just spinning, spinnin free,
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky,
Brush in some clouds and sea,
Call it home for you and me.
A peaceful place or so it looks from space,
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace
Is the human face,
But afraid we may lay our home to waste.

Re: Lets play. . . - Identify these song lyrics

Picture a bright orange ball, just dusty, empty sea,
Hopeful with what could be.
Terraform it with a slice of sky,
Underneath fly birds among the tree,
While flowers bloom with bumble bee.
A peaceful place watched far from space,
Pulling closer the human race.
Full of fragile hope, delicate as lace
Is this human pace,
Bust strong is the desire for a Martian taste.

Congrats on Ani, Bill.  big_smile

Hint: the author of the song committed suicide because of his political beliefs.

Mundaka, Cops of the World, by Phil Ochs.

Now, for something a little bit light hearted given the times.  big_smile

Little Johnny Jones, he was a US pilot,
And no shrinking violet was he.
He was mighty proud when World War III was declared.
He wasn't scared, no siree!

One of my favorite songs.  smile

Re: Lets play. . . - Identify these song lyrics

*Well, I hope Bill doesn't mind if I bend the proposed rules a bit (I have tried sincerely guessing previous questions)...

The skies are green and glowing
          Where my heart is,
          Where my heart is,
Where the scented lunar flower is growing,
          Somewhere beyond the stars,
          Beyond Antares.

     I'll be back
          Though it takes forever.
          Forever is just a day.
     Forever is just another journey.
Tomorrow I'll stop along the way,

And let the years go fading
          Where my heart is,
          Where my heart is,
Where my love eternally is waiting,
          Somewhere beyond the stars,
          Beyond Antares.

*One of my favorites (it also helps that Antares is my favorite star)...also, -who- sang it?  smile

"Beyond Antares"
from TOS "The Conscience of the King"
sung by Uhura

Mundaka, yours I still can't figure out.  tongue  big_smile

The nearest I can figure is Aerosmith's "Janie's Got A Gun"

Re: Lets play. . . - Identify these song lyrics

O friends, no more these sounds!
Let us sing more cheerful songs,
more full of joy!

Joy, bright spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men becom brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.

Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won a true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs,
Join in our song of praise;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.

All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike tast of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!

Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which he set on their courses
Through the splendour of the firmament;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.

You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your Creator?
Seek Him in the heavens!
Above the stars he must dwell.

Who wrote this, to what music is it played, and why is it important?  big_smile

Re: Lets play. . . - Identify these song lyrics

Well, if Cindy can break the rules I hope nobody minds if I jump in, too. Here's one I like, I couldn't remember all of the lyrics, so it kind skips around a little. Maybe I'll post one of my own later.

We're havin' a party
We're burnin' it down
We're buildin' an idol
He's sad, but he don't frown

He's the cream of the crop
So we're makin' him God
Start writin' this down
When I give you the nod

Smoky and the Bandit
And Saddam Hussain
Were staying up late
And actin' insane

The boys are all ready
They've laid out the plans
They're settin' the stage
For the man-made man

They've worked out the kinks
In your DNA
So sayonara kid
Have a nice day

Eat my dust,
And I'll clean your clock,
Do everything I tell you
And then we'll talk

Eat my dust,
I can be your man
You can be my
Sacraficial lamb.

A mind is like a parachute- it works best when open.
