Re: Street People - Stories

Have you ever been walking down the street, or leaving a bank, or sitting at a cafe, when somebody passes you and you wonder what their story is?

It can be anybody: a pretty girl, a workman, an old but apparently unremarkable person, but you think, "I'm never going to see that person again, but they are a life, a story -- what did they see, what did they think, or care about? Did they lose someone? Did they fight evil? Are they evil? What will have happened to them in 50 years?"

Its like a whole life just walks right past you and you never get to hear the story. Just a wierd thing I do sometimes.

I make their stories up.

Re: Street People - Stories

I always did that with short articles in the newspaper.  It first occurred to me when reading the local section and there was a story about a local man who stabbed his brother to death over an argument over toilet paper.

The sort of life events that would have lead up to killing one's own brother over ass paper is something that still crosses my mind every once in a while.  There's something about the reduction of a person's life to a few lines of newsprint that falls somewhere between being bleakly depressing and having a wierd sort of haiku-like beauty.

Re: Street People - Stories

*Yes, Mundaka, I have.

IIRC (?) Dateline NBC was, a few years ago, running a special series wherein one of the correspondents would toss a dart at a U.S. map.  The city/town nearest or on the point was, of course, "it."  He'd pick up the city/town phone book, open it at random in the white pages, and put his finger down on a name.  Call the number, get a life story.  It was really interesting; just "everyday people" coming on camera and telling major events in their lives.  Lots of surprises, unexpected drama, etc.  Better, IMO, than typical Hollywood celeb drivel.

I often wonder about home life, siblings, where the person grew up, biggest joys and hardships and how they fared through it all...and mostly if going through life will eventually make the person a) somewhat bitter/resentful to the point of taking it out on other people or b) maintaining a sense of awe for life, nature, etc., and an upbeat/resilient nature.  Could be more options there of course, but to date those are the main "routes" I generally see people take...for whatever reason(s).

mirror mirror on the wall,
tell the story of us all,
in reflection do we see,
all the things we wish to be.

What, are you like 9 feet tall and covered with fur or something??... tongue

On another note, I recently watched a Netflix dvd called "Being John Malkovitch"...boy, that was one awesome movie.  It's about this puppeter that stumbles across a portal into the mind of John Malkovitch, and it just gets more and more surreal as it goes along big_smile   Truly a joy to watch..definitely one of those "mess with your head"-type movies...lol.  Highly recommended.
