hello again!
Hello! How can I assist you today?Today I'm hoping you can help me with the NASA GMAT program. I know you have some familiarity with the program. The first question is ... GMAT uses MATLAB. I do not have a license but could secure one for a fee. Will GMAT perform any operations without MATLAB? What are the limitations that will occur if MATLAB is not present?
Yes, I'm familiar with the GMAT program, and I'd be happy to help you with your question.
GMAT does require MATLAB to be installed on your computer in order to run some of its functionalities. However, GMAT also has built-in scripting capabilities that allow you to perform some operations without needing MATLAB. So, while MATLAB is not strictly necessary to use GMAT, it is highly recommended to have a MATLAB license in order to take advantage of all the features that GMAT offers. The limitations of not having MATLAB installed when using GMAT will depend on the specific operations you are trying to perform. If you are using GMAT's built-in scripting capabilities, you can still perform some operations without MATLAB. However, if you want to use some of the more advanced features, such as MATLAB functions or external MATLAB code, then you will need to have a MATLAB license.
In summary, while GMAT can be used without MATLAB to a certain extent, having a MATLAB license will allow you to take full advantage of GMAT's capabilities.
<snip due to Apache Internal error>Thank you for your assistance! I'll try installing Python 3.9 per your suggestion. Catch you next time.

It appears that Python 3.9 must be installed to match the existing version of GMAT, even though Python 3.10 is installed by default in the current version of Ubuntu.

GW Johnson is continuing development of spacecraft mission plans using an Excel spreadsheet. He can come pretty close to what a more advanced tool would show, but it is limited in what can be done. The current challenge (as of November 2024) is to plan a hyperbolic trajectory for a mission returning from the Moon or Mars, and an elliptical orbit of a Space Tug that would be assigned the duty of meeting the incoming spacecraft and delivering it safely to LEO.
The challenge for the software we are seeking is to find the least-cost solution for this particular mission. This particular mission is going to become increasingly important as space travel to and from Earth increases in coming years. The idea of trying to use aerobraking in Earth's atmosphere is already bordering on risky, and it may well become impossible if Earth implements Space Traffic Control, as seems highly likely.
All it would take is for a Moon mission to plow into a Starlink satellite to set off the dreaded Kessler Syndrome.
GMAT is a free, open source, NASA sponsored software package to perform spacecraft flight analysis. It does have the disadvantage (from my perspective) of requiring a MATLAB license, which is free for students and affordable to corporations, but a stretch for my budget as a non-student. The last time I checked I think the fee was $100 per year.
In any case, here is a snippet that Google found:

For a non-student, non-profit organization to access MATLAB, the most suitable license option is typically the "Non-Profit License" provided by MathWorks, which offers a discounted price compared to the standard commercial license, allowing non-profits to use MATLAB for research and development purposes.
Key points about the non-profit MATLAB license:
Eligibility:
To qualify, your organization must be a registered non-profit entity with a recognized charitable status.
Cost:
The non-profit license usually comes at a significantly lower cost than the standard commercial license.
Application process:
To obtain a non-profit license, you'll need to contact MathWorks sales and provide documentation proving your non-profit status.
Other relevant license options:
Academic License:

If we had more active members we might have one who is pursuing an Aerospace degree and is eligible to use the school license.

Maybe the way to approach this is to ask if anyone ** out there ** reading this forum has access to GMAT already, and is actually doing projects with it.
For that person:
The problem we'd like to address is the feasibility of designing a Space Tug to dock with Artemis II on it's way back from the Moon, and deliver it safely to LEO.
The Artemis II Orion capsule is equipped with a defective heat shield that will put the astronaut's lives at risk if it is used. It appears that NASA is committed to using that heat shield, regardless of the risk.
A Space Tug made using SpaceX hardware could (theoretically) dock with the capsule on it's way back from the Moon, and provide retro-propulsion sufficient to find a secure orbit in LEO. The heat shield is more than capable of handling an ordinary LEO descent.
The challenge (as I understand the problem) is to find a solution that brings the capsule on a hyperbolic trajectory close to a Space Tug in an elliptical orbit such that the relative dV between the two is manageable with the quantity of fuel that can be carried in the Space Tug, taking into account that the Space Tug has to accelerate itself from LEO to attain the desired orbit, match orbit with the capsule, and then decelerate itself and the capsule into LEO.
From what I've read, GMAT is powerful enough to handle this problem.

I don't expect anyone in the current membership to be interested in the details of how to set up a run.
However, if you start the video and advance the play cursor to 5:36 or so, you will be able to see animation of the program computing a Hohmann Transfer.
What may be of interest is the iteration... the program tries multiple times until it exceeds the orbit of the target object.

This does not seem such a hard problem. Of course the solution depends on how much manoeuvrability is left in either spacecraft, and what their actual orbit is when the heat-shield problem manifests itself. The Artemis must at least be able to correct its course enough to avoid immediate reentry: it must raise it's perigee to well above the atmosphere.
When it then arrives there it can use most of its remaining propellant to slow down, loweing its apogee (which otherwise would be somewhere neer the Moon) and orbit time. It can then remain in that orbit until the space tug is prepared to meet it.
In the mean time the space tug would be launched, or when already in orbit, match that orbit to pass through the Artemis its perigee at the time the Artemis will pass through it. Starting from LEO of the wrong altitude you would raise the apogee while under or above the Artemis its apogee, and when you reach that apogee, fire the engine to adjust the perigee to the altitude of that of the Artemis. By selecting the apogee you can adjust the time needed to arrive at that peogee, to match the arrival of the apogee there.
When both get there, the tug accelerates to Artemis velocity, getting into the same orbit, for meeting it. If the Artemis did not have enough propellant left to significantly decelerate at perigee, both would now be in an orbit that stretches nearly to the Moon. The delta-V to get it there would be in the order of 3km/s. And to get back into LEO it would need a similar delta-V.

For HG Muller ....
Thank you for engaging with the proposed problem. Your task is to design the burns that the astronauts must conduct to match orbits with the tug, and to supply the burns that the tug must conduct to reach the docking point. We ** do ** need to update the Artemis flight to III.
This is a Three Body problem. It must be solved while the vessels are in flight, taking into account the perturbations of the Moon, the Sun, the Earth, and potentially other objects although their influences may be small.
It may be possible to solve this problem with a Python program, but if you can achieve that, you will be the first human in history to pull it off. While the astronauts on the Artemis II flight survived, the flight itself was risky, and all such future flights will be risky. A thriving Space Tug industry will (would) be able to reduce risk of re-entry from beyond LEO. That will especially be true for Mars Return flights.
Just to give you a sense of what your Python program must do, here is a "tree" display for the GMAT system I just downloaded and unpacked.

Gemini tells me that the ".m" files listed in the tree shown in Post #13 are MATLAB files.
In answering this question, Gemini reported there may exist an open source equivalent of MATLAB.
This question is about a software collection called GMAT. This is a free resources sponsored by NASA. I have downloaded the package and unpacked it, and inlooking at the tree display, I see python programs but I also see files with the file type of "m". For example, FindTheMoon.m is shown ahead of FindTheMoon.py.
Do you have any idea what the "m" file is?
***
The .m files you are seeing are source code files written for MATLAB, a high-performance commercial computing and simulation language widely used in aerospace engineering.Because MATLAB is an industry-standard tool for orbital mechanics and trajectory design, NASA’s General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) includes native support for it. Those .m files are typically sample scripts, functions, or interface drivers that allow GMAT to communicate directly with MATLAB to perform complex mathematical computations or data visualization.
Alternatively, if a user does not have an expensive MATLAB license, these .m files can often be run using GNU Octave, which is a free, open-source equivalent.
Why You See Both .m and .py
GMAT provides duplicate examples to accommodate different programming ecosystems:
• The .m file is for users who integrate GMAT with MATLAB / Octave.
• The .py file is the exact same mission example rewritten for Python users.Since you already have Python on your machine, you can safely focus on the .py versions of those scripts to interact with the GMAT API.
Are you planning to use GMAT to simulate interplanetary transfers like the MMX mission or a basic Earth-to-Mars trajectory? I can help walk you through how GMAT utilizes script files if you want to get a basic simulation running.
You are the special version of Gemini that supports Google Search. Your performance is outstanding considering the context. However, to continue this, I will shift over the the full Gemini account, where we have memory that persists. Thank you ** very ** much! I had no idea that Octave is available, and since i cannot afford MATLAB I am definitely interested.
***
You are very welcome! Discovering GNU Octave is a fantastic milestone for anyone diving into aerospace simulation on a budget—it will serve you incredibly well as a free, powerful alternative to MATLAB.Thank you for the kind words! Before you make the transition over to your full Gemini account, here are a few quick tips to help you get Octave up and running with your GMAT installation:
• Compatibility: Octave can natively run the vast majority of .m scripts out of the box. If a GMAT script calls standard mathematical functions or matrix operations, Octave will execute it perfectly.
• The GMAT Interface: When you open your full Gemini account, you can ask for help configuring the specific environment variables needed to link GMAT to Octave, as deep-space tools can sometimes be finicky about path settings.
It has been an absolute pleasure collaborating with you on the history of Soviet exploration, JAXA's ambitious MMX mission, and deep-space orbital mechanics. Safe travels on your transition to the persistent memory account, and have an incredible time simulating your own trajectories to Mars and its moons!
Whenever you are ready in your new environment, just let me know if you would like a sample script template to test the connection between Octave and your GMAT files!
There is a hint in Gemini's answer above that there might be Python equivalent code written to perform the same functions as MATLAB. it true this would be a confirmation of HG Muller's prediction that Python might be able to replicate MATLAB. I'll be pursuing that hint.
If there is a reader of the forum who has direct knowledge of GMAT or space navigation using other tools, this topic is wide open for contributions to help with the education mission of the Mars Society as a whole and this forum in particular. See Recruiting Topic for details.

In this post I have converted over to the "official" Gemini running from Google. This version has memory which Google Search does not.
I opened the new chat with a quote from Google search (the post above), and here is the reply:
Our conversation this morning started out about MMX, the new JAXA mission. We branched to discussion of GMAT, and we learned that Octave may be able to replace some functions performed by MATLAB. There is a hint in the material that perhaps someone wrote Python scripts to emulate the MATLAB code. I have GMAT installed but not yet running. I'd like to make GMAT available to our forum members, but have failed in previous attempts, primarily because I do not have a MATLAB license. There appears to be a possibility we might be able to run GMAT effectively without MATLAB.
Here is a post containing relevant replies from Google Search: <snip>

Exploring Python Equivalents in GMAT
It is fantastic to see how the pieces are coming together for bringing GMAT to your forum members without the financial barrier of a MATLAB license. The hint regarding the matching .py and .m files is spot on, and it completely validates the architectural path toward a fully open-source workflow using Python or GNU Octave.
NASA's integration of the GMAT Application Programming Interface (API) uses SWIG-generated wrappers that expose the exact same core simulation mechanics to both Python and MATLAB/Java environments. This means that for nearly every MATLAB driver script or example package provided in GMAT, a direct Python counterpart exists to perform identical trajectory simulations, parametric scans, or targeting sequences.
Comparison of GMAT Integration Options
Integration Method: MATLAB / Octave (.m) versus Python (.py)
Primary Engine: MATLAB or GNU Octave runtime versus standard Python interpreter
API Bridge: Java/MATLAB interface wrappers versus SWIG-generated Python modules
Licensing Cost: Commercial (free via GNU Octave alternative) versus completely free and open-source ecosystem
Execution Style: Script-driven or interactive command execution across both ecosystems
Using the .py scripts allows you to bypass the need for MATLAB entirely while leveraging a standard Python environment to drive GMAT's core numerical engines, propagators, and force models.

This post is a follow up on #15, asking about burn planning...
I am greatly encouraged by the potential for us to get GMAT running, and more importantly, doing useful work. We have members who want to design space systems for the Mars and Moon trade, as well as simple LEO flights with docking to existing objects. Before we go further, please investigate to see if GMAT can be used to generate burn instructions? For a burn, we need a vector toward a star, a burn duration, and a force figure. Can GMAT help us generate those?
***Generating Burn Instructions in GMAT
Yes, GMAT can handle this exact requirement, though it handles the "vector toward a star" part through coordinate frames and inertial orientations rather than raw celestial pointing inputs.
To break down how GMAT addresses your three specific requirements for a thruster burn:
1. The Vector (Direction)
GMAT does not typically require you to hand-calculate a pointing vector straight at a specific star for a standard orbital maneuver unless you are doing specialized optical navigation or stellar occultation modeling. Instead, GMAT handles burn direction vectors through defined celestial or local coordinate systems:
Inertial Frames: You can specify vectors in absolute frames like EarthMJ2000Eq, MarsMJ2000, or J2000, where axes align permanently with stellar reference frames (such as the vernal equinox and Earth's mean equator at J2000).
Local Orbital Frames: You can point burns relative to the spacecraft's motion using VNB (Velocity, Normal, Binormal) or LVLH (Local Vertical Local Horizontal) frames.
Custom Angles: For optimization and targeting, you can parameterize a burn direction using in-plane and out-of-plane steering angles (alpha and beta) or direct thruster Euler angles.
2. Burn Duration and Force Figure (Magnitude)
GMAT supports two primary types of maneuvers depending on whether you want a quick approximation or a high-fidelity physical simulation:
Impulsive Burns (Delta-V): Modeled instantaneously. You specify a velocity change vector component, and GMAT instantly updates the spacecraft's state vector. This is ideal for initial trade studies and preliminary mission design.
Finite Burns (Thrust Over Time): Modeled continuously via the FiniteBurn and BeginFiniteBurn / EndFiniteBurn commands. Here, GMAT explicitly incorporates your force figure (thrust magnitude in Newtons, defined by the physical Thruster object and fuel tank pressure) and integrates the equations of motion over a specified burn duration (seconds or a target-driven stop condition). Mass depletion and declining tank pressure are actively modeled as the burn proceeds.
Targeting and Optimization: Using GMAT's built-in differential correctors or optimizers, you can have GMAT automatically solve for the exact burn duration or steering angles required to hit a target orbit (such as a Mars capture or a LEO docking rendezvous).

This next post is about space navigation in the Apollo program:
Thank you for this reassuring reply. Before we go further, I'd like to find out how space navigation is done with humans on board. In Apollo days, astronauts carried a telescope and received training to align the capsule on a star before each critical burn was performed. Buzz Aldrin famously used that method during Apollo 11.
Apollo Era Celestial Navigation and IMU Alignment
You hit on a fascinating cornerstone of crewed spaceflight history. Buzz Aldrin—who earned his Sc.D. from MIT with a dissertation on manned orbital rendezvous and was famously nicknamed "Dr. Rendezvous"—mastered these exact procedures.
In the Apollo era, spacecraft relied on an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) containing three precision gyroscopes mounted on a gimbaled platform. While gyros maintain a fixed orientation in space short-term, mechanical imperfections, vehicle rotations, and electrical drift cause the platform to drift over time. If left uncorrected, a burn calculated on a drifted IMU would send the spacecraft off course.
To fix this, astronauts performed optical star sightings to recalibrate the platform before critical maneuvers.
The Apollo Navigation Setup and Procedure
The Hardware: The Command Module featured a 28-power sextant (SXT) and a wide-field scanning telescope (SCT) built directly into the cabin bulkhead, mechanically linked to the IMU.
Program 52 (P52): The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) routine used for IMU re-alignment. The astronaut would call up P52 on the DSKY (Display and Keyboard).
Star Selection: The computer would suggest or allow the astronaut to select a pair of known navigational stars from a catalog stored in the AGC memory (such as Rigel, Sirius, or Vega).
The Sighting: Using the telescope to locate the star and the high-magnification sextant to center the star's crosshairs precisely against a landmark or a second star, the astronaut marked the exact timestamp by pressing the "MARK" button on the DSKY.
The Calculation: By comparing the expected star angles against the actual measured angles, the AGC computed the physical error angles of the IMU platform and commanded torquing motors to physically realign the gyros.
Once the platform was squared away against the stars, the navigation system had a pristine inertial reference frame, ensuring that when the SPS (Service Propulsion System) engine lit up, the thrust vector pointed precisely where the flight plan demanded.

How do modern spacecraft automate star tracker alignments compared to the manual Apollo sextant method?
Automated Star Tracker Alignments vs. Apollo Manual Sighting
While Apollo astronauts spent valuable mission time peering through a sextant, tracking star pairs, and punching coordinates into the DSKY, modern spacecraft completely automate star tracker alignments using electro-optical digital cameras and advanced pattern-matching software.
A modern star tracker (sometimes called a star tracker camera) acts as an autonomous celestial navigation sensor. It operates independently, constantly taking pictures of the night sky and comparing them against an onboard star catalog to figure out exactly which way the spacecraft is pointing in inertial space.
How Modern Star Trackers Work
Want me to explain how spacecraft use these star tracker quaternions to execute autonomous deep-space trajectory correction burns?
Solid-State Imaging: Instead of a human eyeball looking through an optical eyepiece, a high-sensitivity CCD or CMOS digital sensor captures wide-field images of star fields every fraction of a second.
Autonomous Pattering Matching (Lost-in-Space): If a spacecraft boots up or loses its orientation reference, the onboard processor runs "lost-in-space" algorithms. It measures the geometric triangles and angular separations between the brightest stars in the camera's field of view, compares them to an internal database of thousands of cataloged stars, and instantly computes a precise 3D attitude solution (Roll, Pitch, and Yaw).
Continuous Kalman Filtering: Once an initial fix is established, the star tracker works hand-in-hand with the spacecraft's ring laser gyros or fiber-optic gyros via a Kalman filter. The gyros provide high-frequency, smooth changes in orientation, while the star tracker provides continuous low-frequency absolute corrections to eliminate gyro drift.

This post is about the limits of the space navigation system used for Artemis...
Thank you for explaining how NASA has modified their space navigation systems to improve the automation. I understand this is a reasonable adaptation to the immediate needs for Artemis flights. Artemis I was successful as a fully automated flight, and I deduce that Artemis II was similar, in that the astronauts may not had to worry about space navigation. They had plenty to worry about, but it was at the next level up. I think this idea is dependent upon computing resources on Earth. Space navigators who reach Mars are NOT going to have that kind of nearby (3 seconds away) backup. Please evaluate that observation.
***The Shift to Deep-Space Autonomy
Your observation is spot on. For Earth-orbital and cislunar missions—including the Artemis flight profile around the Moon—the navigation architecture relies heavily on real-time tracking from Earth. Ground assets like the Deep Space Network (DSN) and Near Space Network measure precise Doppler shifts and range signals. Flight dynamics teams at Mission Control then compute state vectors and beam maneuver commands back up with negligible time delay.

+ 1For a crewed Mars mission, that entire operational paradigm collapses.
AeroMorning.comThe Core Operational Constraints at Mars
Speed-of-Light Time Delays: Signal delays between Earth and Mars vary from 4 minutes at closest approach to over 22 minutes one-way when Mars is on the far side of the Sun. A round-trip conversation (or telemetry check) takes anywhere from 8 to 44 minutes.
Conjunction Blackouts: During solar conjunction—when Mars passes behind the Sun from Earth's perspective—communications drop out almost entirely for roughly two to three weeks due to solar plasma interference.
Time-Critical Dynamics: Mars Aerocapture or Direct Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) occurs within a narrow atmospheric entry corridor. An error during capture or retro-burn must be detected and corrected in real time; there is no time to send tracking data to Houston and wait for a trajectory update.
NASA (.gov)How Autonomy Replaces Mission Control
Because ground control cannot act as an active loop for time-critical burns, a Mars transit vehicle must carry its own "local Mission Control" onboard. This requires a fundamental shift in software and hardware architecture:
Optical Autonomous Navigation (AutoNav): Spacecraft use optical sensors to photograph target bodies (such as Mars, Phobos, and Deimos) against background star fields. Onboard algorithms process these images to triangulate the vehicle's position and velocity without ground intervention.
Onboard Trajectory Solvers: Tools like NASA's GMAT—or stripped-down flight software variants running onboard—must continuously run differential correctors to solve for Trajectory Correction Maneuvers (TCMs) independently.
Crew-in-the-Loop Decision Making: Flight software will handle the heavy numerical integration and state estimation, but human crews must be trained to evaluate, verify, and authorize autonomous burn plans locally, returning crew responsibilities closer to maritime navigation than modern low-Earth orbit operations.
In short, your critique hits the exact design bottleneck for deep-space exploration: Artemis tests hardware and operational procedures, but Mars will force humanity to cut the digital umbilical cord to Earth.

This post is about the GW Johnson business model for Space Tugs in the Mars/Earth system.
I cannot publish this most recent response because you have brought something into the conversation that is outside the scope of the business plan. This is NOT a criticism. A space tug is absolutely needed for an Aldrin Cycler or any similar system. We are NOT talking about that at all. The business opportunity is to avoid passing through the atmosphere of Earth upon return from Mars. Instead, the business would offer to dock with vessels arriving from Mars, and place them in LEO. On the outbound side, the business would save mass on the customer vessel that would otherwise be needed to reach escape from LEO. Does that help refine the question?
Refining the LEO Space Tug Architecture
Thank you for the clarification. That distinction completely reframes the business model, and it makes absolute sense.
Instead of a cycler loop, this business focuses on a dedicated, reusable LEO-stationed infrastructure asset that acts as a high-energy ferry:
The Outbound Leg: The space tug takes a lightweight customer vessel (stripped of heavy TMI propellant hardware) from LEO and provides the velocity change required to inject it onto a Mars transfer trajectory, then returns to LEO.
The Inbound Leg: A vessel returning from Mars arrives at Earth on a high-speed hyperbolic trajectory. Rather than plunging into Earth's atmosphere—which requires heavy thermal protection systems, heat shields, parachutes, and high-g deceleration loads—the customer vessel docks with the space tug. The tug performs a large propulsive braking burn to capture the vehicle and lower it safely into standard LEO.
Can GMAT Handle This Specific LEO Tug Architecture?
Yes, GMAT is exceptionally well-suited for modeling this exact operational profile because it handles both hyperbolic approach trajectories and closed-orbit rendezvous with high mathematical precision.
Here is how GMAT evaluates the mechanics of this business model:
Hyperbolic Approach and Capture Targeting: When a vessel returns from Mars, its entry state relative to Earth is a hyperbolic excess velocity (v-infinity). GMAT's targeters and differential correctors can model this incoming trajectory and automatically calculate the exact size, direction, and timing of the propulsive capture burn required to drop the orbital energy from a hyperbola into a closed elliptical orbit or direct LEO parking orbit.
Delta-V and Mass Budgets: GMAT allows your member to input specific engine Isp (Specific Impulse) and dry/wet mass figures for the space tug. By running simulations for both the outbound Mars injection assist and the inbound LEO capture burn, GMAT will output the exact propellant consumption per trip, letting your member calculate when the tug needs refueling.
Rendezvous Sequencing: GMAT can model the orbital phasing and proximity operations required for the space tug to match orbits and dock with the incoming Mars return vehicle at high altitude before executing the braking burn into LEO.
This type of mission design is precisely what allows commercial operators to prove out mass savings and payload multiplier economics before committing capital to hardware development.
Want me to outline the specific GMAT script components needed to model a hyperbolic Earth capture burn?
Yes
The first version of the reply went off into lala land with Aldrin cyclers.
