The NewMars forum has a tradition of encouraging creative thinking.
We have thousands of posts that reflect inspired thinking about possible futures for the human race in space, and in particular, on Mars.
This new topic is itself inspired by a series of posts that occurred in 2020. The participants included creative thinkers and one engineer.
The imaginations of engineers are necessarily constrained by their training.
The imaginations of creative non-engineers are free to describe visions of possible futures that might or might not be possible in the Real Universe.
This topic is offered for NewMars members who might like to contribute to a collection of knowledge about habitats and related systems that are possible in the Real Universe.
A subset of those that are possible is those that are not only possible but practical at some stage of human development.
A subset of ** those ** are not only possible but practical in 2026 or near term.
In Post #3 we will pull over a set of ideas from a speculative topic to see what is possible in 2026.

In a topic about Deimos in "Human Missions" Tom Kalbus introduced the idea of creating a bubble for human habitation out of the materials at Deimos. Later the topic considered construction of an O'Neill habitat.
GW Johnson introduced the idea that additional materials for a O'Neill habitat might be required.
This topic is offered for NewMars members who might like to study the problem, and propose solutions that are practical in 2026.
We might begin with an inventory of materials needed to make a standard 20 mile O'Neill habitat.
We might then inventory the available materials at Deimos, and compare the results to the O'Neill requirements.
An asteroid might exist with the materials needed to complete the needed inventory.
I'd like to point out that this is an academic exercise, because an orbit of Mars is not a good place to put an O'Neill habitat.
The moons of Mars orbit so close to the planet they spend more than half of the time in shadow.
However, O'Neill habitats at the L4 or L5 points for Mars might be of interest, just as they have been and still are for Earth.
