Diesel Vehicles

Does anyone here have any experience with fuel separation systems like Fass Fuel on their diesel vehicles? What are its benefits?

Re: Diesel Vehicles

I have a boat with a diesel engine. It is fitted with a proprietary filter/water separator. Is that what you mean, Sunpraiser?
I drain it down and replace it's filter every year  and carry a set of spares for it. I wouldn't go out on the boat without this device in good order. It all comes before the fuel pump so particles don't wear the pump. The Fass one doesn't seem to be so arranged.

Hmm, that clears things up.

Re: Diesel Vehicles

For SpaceNut ... This topic contains the word diesel... I am wondering if anyone can explain what the discussion was about?

I'm guessing there is a need to keep water (and other materials) out of diesel liquid being fed to an engine, but I can't quite tell if that is what elderflower and the other correspondents were talking about.

Re: Diesel Vehicles

In searching for topics with the word "diesel" in the title, I found this topic from 2017 once again.

Since no one answered my question about FASS I decided to ask Google Search. As usual with Google Search, the output is a continuous stream of unformatted text.

A FASS (Fuel Air Separation System) is an aftermarket diesel lift pump and filtration system.
It continuously polishes your diesel fuel by removing entrained air, water, and debris (down to 2 microns) before the fuel reaches your engine's high-pressure injection pump.

Why Install a FASS System?

Factory diesel fuel systems are prone to under-pressure and struggle to filter out microscopic debris and air bubbles. A FASS system corrects these issues by doing the following:

Removes Air and Vapor:
Air compresses while fuel does not. Removing air bubbles eliminates cavitation and noisy injectors, providing a solid, consistent fuel column.

Advanced Filtration & Water Separation:

It filters debris down to 2 microns absolute and removes over 99% of free water.Improves Lubricity: By completely conditioning the fuel, a FASS system improves your diesel fuel's lubricity by at least 10%, which prevents metal-to-metal wear and significantly extends the life of expensive components like your injectors and injection pumps.Improves

Performance: With cleaner, air-dense fuel, you will notice smoother idle, improved throttle response, and better overall combustion efficiency.

Common Configurations

FASS systems come in a few common variations depending on your truck's setup:Signature Series: Replaces your factory lift pump with a heavy-duty, adjustable electric lift pump and a dual-filter housing for maximum fuel polishing.

Titanium Series: Similar to the Signature Series but built into a smaller, more compact design.

Drop-In Series: Utilizes your OEM in-tank pump for flow while adding the inline air/vapor separation and fine filtration (ideal for DIY driveway installations).

I wonder how much of a problem impurities in diesel fuel actually is.  Oldfart1939 reported on his use of a system to clean diesel fuel in a marine applicaition.  I wonder if a marine application might be more subject to contamination than land based ones?
