We are happy to welcome former members back into the active community. It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned". In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access. You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below. Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply. SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.
SpaceNut is in the process of upgrading members from "banned" to inActive. Since there are over 1000 folks caught up in this situation due to the spammers, it is going to take SpaceNut a while to complete the upgrade.

The Recruiting Topic is updated each day.
To see it please click on the "Active" button.
The daily update shows a bit of the history of the forum, and explains a bit of our hopes for new members!
Your feedback is helpful, because we did not realize prospective members might not know about the Active button.
When you click on the Active button you will also see the Daily Recap. That feature allows you to see where the energy is in the forum on a previous day.

As we begin the process of discussion about membership, please think of this as like hiring into a position with a company. As you will read in the Recruiting Topic, we are looking for members who will help to pull on the oars, and are interested in a long term engagement.

8:28AM (0 minutes ago)Hi!
In my first reply, I included a URL that was intended to show you the very first post in the forum. After sending the message, I realized I had not updated the URL to point to the first post. Here is the the corrected link:
https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=1#p1You can see any post in the archive using this method.
Some numbers do not work, because a vacancy is left behind if someone deletes a post. This forum has been through some challenging times, so there are a few potholes here and there.
If you undertake a serious exploration of the history of the forum, you may run across damaged posts. We Admins have spent many hours editing our collection of posts to try to insure they are readable after all these years, but you may find one that needs work. Please let me know if you find one.

The gent who contacted us about membership sent a follow up message with a substantial amount of information. I have chosen one tiny element of the avalanche to share with NewMars members.
My sense of the situation is that this is a talented individual who is reaching out for opportunities to secure paying contracts.
I am reminded of PhotonBytes who showed us many examples of creative thinking and skill in use of modern digital tools.

I'd be interested in any comments our members might have.
I'd particularly appreciate an evaluation by Calliban.

NewMars members are invited to visit a web site created by our visitor. See post #1857
This post contains a copy of my reply.
Before composing the reply, I followed several of the many links that arrived in today's message. LinkedIn turned up a large number of members with the same or similar names, and I was not able to pull our visitor from that large collection.
I visited both of the web sites that were linked from his email. I get the impression this gent is far more advanced than anyone currently in our membership in skills needed for machine design. To have a member with this skill set would be a good thing, but skills at this level would be better matched with income earning opportunities, such as may exist in large corporations.
We have at least two members (and possibly three) who could evaluate the pump designs that appear to be on offer.
Here is my reply:
Dear Mr. Barrera!
First, thank you for your kind use of excellent English. I have studied Spanish, but have not used it enough to venture even a small conversation. For that reason, I am ** really ** impressed by your mastery of a second language, and you may well have proficiency in other languages as well.
***
My sense of your inquiry is that you are a talented and creative person with demonstrated skills and abilities, and that you are looking for opportunities to find clients who will pay appropriately for your services.
***
My sense of this is that you have cast a wide net, and in your net you find large corporations and a few tiny minnows, such as our little forum. While we are affiliated with the Mars Society, we are operating independently, so we have a slightly different mission.
***
I do not think your needs to find clients right now are a perfect fit for this group. I have created a post that offers a link to one of your web sites. Our members are free to visit your site and make comments if they are so inspired. We do have one mechanical engineer in the group, and we have at least one other member who has the knowledge to evaluate your web site.
***
Most of all, I think your impressive work will find application on Earth long before it finds application on Mars. Like most of the Mars community, our members are in the very early stages of thinking about how civilization will unfold on Mars.
***
Best wishes to you for success in finding clients for your offerings, because the day may come when your inventions are a perfect fit for the Mars project.

For kbd512 and all... our correspondent from Mexico wrote back and added a little video about the design effort in 1990.
The little video shows correspondence with major institutions including NASA, so something definitely happened in that period. However, if there is any news past 1990 I have yet to see it. Here is my reply:
Thank you for your most recent email! It seems you might have added the little video at the end. It shows work done in 1990, and correspondence about that work. My question is how the newmars.com/forums can help you? It is 30 years since that work was done. What has happened since? Are you now retired, or are you still actively pursuing the potential of your earlier work? We have a member who has expressed interest in adding a person with practical knowledge of turbines to our group. I am open to the idea, but am questioning how a person with your background would fit into Newmars.com/forums. I am guessing you have not had time to learn anything about this group, or it's 20+ year history, or it's potential going forward. I am interested in bringing new people into the group if they are going somewhere. We have had over 1000 members at one point, and are down to a dozen or so, and only one or two are practical people. I ask again... how can we help you? What are you doing that we might be able to support? *** Google just reminded me to ask if you might be interested in an online interview? The executive committee meets once a week on Sunday evenings at a time that might work for you in Mexico. It is currently 1 AM UTC. That should match up reasonably well with time zones where you are.(th)
In re-reading this message, I realized I under counted the number of practical people in our membership. Next time this comes up I will use a higher number. My interest is to increase the number of practical people in the active membership, if any are interested in becoming active in this group.

We received another email from our recent applicant. I have decided to decline the opportunity. I think this person is not a good fit for the group at this point in our history.
It seems unlikely we can help you. What is more, it seems you may be unable to help us. Your activity seems important so I hope you are successful. Please do not send more reports of your activities since 1990. I confess they are overwhelming.
You have shown no interest in us, but I have shown considerable interest in you.
Your application for membership is declined.
Naturally this is a disappointing outcome.
However, we are wide open for application from anyone who might think NewMars.com/forums might be a good place to pitch in to help other members and to receive feedback on activities that are Mars related.
