Perseverance Rover Landing Mars Society Watch Party

Mars Society Hosting Facebook Watch Party for Perseverance Rover Landing

The Mars Society will be hosting a virtual Facebook Watch Party for the upcoming landing of NASA’s Perseverance Rover on the surface of the planet Mars.

Launched on June 30, 2020, “Percy” is scheduled to set down on February 18th inside the 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero Crater, where it will then begin its mission to explore the nearby area in search of signs of past and present life.

We invite you to mark the arrival of the latest Mars rover by joining our live Facebook event (Thursday, February 18th - 11:45 am - 1:45 pm PT / 2:45-4:45 pm ET). Visit our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TheMarsSociety) for more details and to join the live stream on the 18th.

As with previous Facebook events, an online chat room will operate along side the broadcast, with participants able to ask questions and make comments. Senior members of the Mars Society, including its president, Dr. Robert Zubrin, will be online as well.

We look forward to seeing you then, and we wish Percy a successful landing on the Red Planet!

For SpaceNut re #2

Thank you for noting the Mars Society landing event!

This topic has been idle since 2021, and I thought this report would be a good fit...

The city where I live has a science museum.  Relatives are planning a trip to visit this museum in order to take in a special exhibit planned for June. I decided to visit the museum today, just to remind myself of what is there.  It's been a while.

To my surprise, the museum somehow wangled a full size model of the Perseverance rover and the Ingenuity helicopter.

I was astonished at the sheer size/mass of the rover, and of the helicopter.  All I've see before this are images, so had no sense of scale.

The exhibit includes a wheel that visitors can touch/feel/experience.

In light of reports of damage to the aluminum wheel due to sharp rocks on Mars, I paid attention to the shape of the wheel.

If anyone has questions about the model, I'd be willing to try to answer them.

Re: Perseverance Rover Landing Mars Society Watch Party

Our friends at NSS North Houston notified me that the Mars Society chapter in Houston is active, and in fact meeting on the same day this month.

I decided to ask Google what is going on with the Houston chapter, and was surprised at the robust results list:
