Human Learning

For SpaceNut....

We already have a topic for machine learning.

This topic is about human learning.

The process of learning is part of the experience of every member of the forum.

My guess is that everyone takes the ability to learn for granted, so that it does not seem noticeable when someone learns something.

If humans are going to succeed in living on Mars, a ** lot ** of learning needs to happen.

The article at the link below is a reflection on one way of learning, and how it might be applied.

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/the- … d-learning

My impression is that most readers might find the contents of the article to reflect common sense.

However, sometimes a subject is so close to us we may not be aware of it, like the air we breathe.  We (or at least I) only notice the air when it contains something obnoxious.

I think it is a reasonable guess that most humans don't know how to pass along knowledge effectively.

Most human cultures that I've learned a bit about (that is a small number of the total that have existed) seem to develop a practice of delegating education to specialists.

A culture can waver or falter if the education process is allowed to fail.  We in America seem to have allowed the COVID epidemic to put a big dent in our educational attainment.  I saw a study recently that indicated that wealthy families came through COVID with some modest learning loss, but that cohort seems to have recovered fully.  That is not the case for everyone else.  The losses remained, and achievement continues to decline due to the lack of the foundation that was missed.

The study authors offered a hint of a suggestion of what might be an explanation for the difference in educational attainment... those who recovered appear to have lived in homes where non-school education happened.

This topic is available for NewMars members who might wish to provide links to studies, or examples of successful learning activities, or to offer comments about successful efforts in or outside of school.
