Re: News about 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

This post is reserved for an index to notable events that may be recorded by NewMars members as the season progresses.

Based upon previous years, we can expect that SpaceNut and his neighbors will be able to collect plenty of free rain water, and perhaps run a wind turbine at full torque now and then.

An aircraft propeller would be strong enough to operate reliably in the winds that can be expected.

Re: News about 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

For SpaceNut re upcoming hurricane season...

I just paused a long conversation with ChatGPT4o about collecting thermal energy from the Atlantic ocean before it has a chance to enter the water, and contribute to raising the temperature of the water.

Taking Carnot into account, it appears that the best we might hope for is to remove 40% of the arriving solar energy.

However, that would mean that only 60% of the solar radiation would enter the water as a heat sink.

A factor to consider is reflection of radiation by the water.  ChatGPT4o estimates that percentage as 7%, so the net benefit (ie reduction of the energy flowing into the ocean would be 37%).

Saying this another way, 93% of the solar energy would flow into the ocean by default.  60% would flow into the ocean as a heat sink in the proposed scenario.

Thus, the flow would be reduced by 33% if the energy capture device is deployed and it works as advertised.

A benefit of the proposed system (aside from reducing heat inflow) is that the heat sink energy can be deployed some distance below the raft, so that there would be an upwelling of water which otherwise remains stratified.  This could encourage sea life in at least two ways.

Re: News about 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

For SpaceNut ....

You have created a new Projects Category, and you've made it visible only to registered members.

At present we have no projects defined, and I would like to offer this idea for a possible project.

Please keep in mind that the Projects category is not intended for discussion.  If we decide to put this (or any) idea into the Projects category, it needs to be done with intention.  We intend to accomplish something.

I asked ChatGPT4o to prepare a summary of our conversation yesterday...

Introduction and Background

Climate Change and Ocean Heating

  • []Climate change is a pressing global issue.
[]Ocean heating contributes to the intensification of storms.

  • Our hypothesis: capturing solar energy before it enters the ocean can help mitigate this.

Technical Feasibility

Solar Concentrator Systems

  • []Mirrors focus sunlight on a central receiver.
[]High-temperature energy conversion using thermophotovoltaic cells.

  • Efficiency: 44% conversion of solar energy to electricity at 1435°C.

Environmental Impact

Benefits of Reducing Surface Heating

  • []Creates vertical currents by transferring heat deep into the ocean.
[]Potential positive effects on marine ecosystems.

  • May reduce storm intensity by lowering sea surface temperatures.

Economic Justification

Dual Benefits

  • []Direct revenue from electricity generation.
[]Indirect savings from reduced hurricane damage.

  • Cost-benefit analysis: combining direct and indirect economic impacts.

Funding and Implementation

Potential Funding Strategies

  • []Public-private partnerships.
    []Climate bonds and green financing.
    []Insurance and reinsurance partnerships.
    []Catastrophe bonds (Cat Bonds).
[]Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and impact investing.
    []International aid and development funds.

Implementation Steps

  • []Pilot projects to demonstrate feasibility.
    []Collaborative research for validation.

  • Long-term agreements and incentives for stakeholders.

Conclusion and Next Steps

Summary and Global Benefits

  • []Capturing solar energy before it enters the ocean can reduce ocean heating and storm intensity.
[]Potential for significant economic and environmental benefits.

  • Suggested roadmap: further research, pilot projects, and international collaboration.

You have the ability to create in that space and only some members can post or create within it unless the attributes are changed.

Keep in mind that the suns energy comes in across lots of wavelengths and the red end of the spectrum is heat that gets absorbed in air, water and land. Any energy from the sun needs to be captured before its absorbed by any of these.

Re: News about 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

We have had a couple of tropical storms that have made land fall in the past few weeks with Tropical Storm Beryl forecast to become a major hurricane as it approaches the southeast Caribbean

Beryl’s center is forecast to pass about 26 miles (45 kilometers) south of Barbados, said Sabu Best, director of the island’s meteorological service’s director.

On Saturday, Beryl was located about 820 miles (1,320 kilometers) east-southeast of Barbados, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph). It was moving west at 23 mph (37 kph).A major hurricane is considered a Category 3 or higher, with winds of at least 111 mph (178 kph). Hurricane watches were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while a tropical storm watch was issued for Martinique and Tobago.

Why Hurricane Beryl's 'insane' intensification has experts worried

Category 4 storm packing potentially catastrophic 150-mile-per-hour sustained winds.

As GW noticed that it looked like the path was well in the area of space x launch buildings.

Hurricane Beryl is likely to hit the Texas coast Monday. Exactly where remains uncertain. as a Category 1 or 2 storm

Re: News about 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

This morning's Internet news included this item:

Hurricane Beryl tracker: Live updates as storm makes landfall in Texas; major power outages reported in Houston region
Hurricane Beryl roared ashore early Monday morning along the Matagorda Peninsula with winds reaching 80 mph.

Best wishes for a successful (damage free) ride through this!

Re: News about 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

For SpaceNut ...

Hurricane Debby is headed up your way.

Hoping you and the family are above the flooding that is predicted.

I asked Google if all power is restored in Houston after Hurricane Beryl, and there does not appear to be a clear answer, because (I gather) the main power utility does not provide all the information needed for an answer.
