I would like to express my deep appreciation that both GW Johnson and tahanson43206 virtually attended Dr. Bell's excellent presentation. The attendance was below normal--probably due to a PBR (Professional Bull Riders) event at the local arena and a gun show in town. Our core group of regulars was there, tho'. The weather was also the first shirt-sleeve warm day this Spring.

Wyoming is a bit chillier than central Texas.  We've reached 90 F once already,  and are headed there again this week. 

It's been over a quarter century,  but my experience in Minnesota said that those folks think it is swimming weather,  once the ice pack breaks up on the lakes.

Yes,  I know.  I have seen it.

I was there 2nd half of winter 95-96 and for winter 96-97,  which were both 100-year record-setting winters for cold and snow,  even by Minnesota standards.  That was a real education for a Texas flatland boy. 

We moved in between Christmas 95 and New Year 96,  during a local heat wave.  It was 17 F.  Then it dropped below 0 and stayed there.  From New Years' Day to mid-March,  there was not one single day when it was not at least 20 below 0 F for the morning low,  and never got above 0 F for the afternoon high. 

That stretch finally broke mid-March,  when the wind died and the sun came out.  It felt warm.  We were all running around the snowbanks outside in short sleeves,  myself included.  Because it felt warm.  The actual temperature turned out to be positive 3 F.

The worst day was Feb 2,  1996,  in Mankato,  MN.  It had been -30 F all night with 40-knot winds.  It was -31 F in Mankato that morning,  with an afternoon high of -14 F.  Up in the arrowhead region near the Canadian border,  it was -61 F (not a wind chill).  200 miles further NW at Winnipeg,  it was -84 F,  again not a wind chill.

The next winter was not quite as cold,  but even snowier.  About 10 miles west of me,  the snowpack was 20-30 feet deep all the way to Montana.  I thought my thermometer was broken,  because it said -10 F every morning from November to March.  I found out it was not broken when we moved back to Texas,  and it went to 104 F.  I had 2-to-5 feet of snow in my yard all winter long.  The meltdown was only 2 weeks long,  in mid-April,  which caused massive flooding in multiple states.

The city of interest in the case of today's presentation by Oldfart1939 is Denver.

There are a number of interesting looking videos, including the one by Dr. Bell that GW Johnson and I attended online.

YVAA Winter Lecture Series #5 is the one featuring the talk on Dr. Harold Urey and his experiments with lightning to start life.

Update midway through the video...

This presentation is (from my perspective) very well done... The slides are excellent, and the talk itself is audible. if there were microphone problems I didn't notice anything.

The biography of Harold Urey includes his support of the Manhattan Project during World War II.

At the 18+ minute mark I see an AI generated image ... clever use of the technology

The talk itself is about 33 minutes ...

I'm hoping other NewMars members will take the 33 minutes to attend this presentation and perhaps ? provide some feedback for Oldfart1939.

The activity that is the focus of this talk might well have occurred on Mas as well. If that is the case, then the robot explorers should find evidence in their study of the regolith.

Update at 25 minutes mark .... we are looking at the same slide for the last 10 minutes of the talk...

It reads:

What are the next experiments?

- The addition of sulfur compounds to the atmosphere
- Run it again under volcanic conditions
- Optical activity of amino acids

I'd like to encourage you (Oldfart1939) to prepare this talk for another meeting, and add slides to illustrate the ideas you are discussing in the audio.

I'm not sure what the slides would look like, but the AI artists might be able to come up with something interesting.

Question ... how long to take a sample?

Very slow process ... Tai Chi dance the engineers have to perform to move the samples.

There is a second robotic arm to stow the sample

Question: ... can the rover pickup samples ? No... the rover cannot do that

A new rover is needed to pick up the samples

Question ... what are the black parts of the pictures ... those are landscapes assembled from multiple pictures.

Question about slide 35 ... the black section is the rover itself ... it is expensive to send data.

Possibly it was how long will the equipment last ... ? 80 years ?

A greater concern is funding ... NASA's budget has to pay for keeping these missions going.

The equipment may well outlast funding....

We were having more than just microphone issues, and I was using a club-provided computer that wasn't responding to my commands. But we need to thank Stefanie Rickhoff for her inputs to this talk.
More really GOOD club news is: we now have a donated "Obsession" Dobsonian telescope sporting a 12.5"  Zambuto mirror! This will be used at our club star parties held at the Pictograph State Park later this Summer. The same anonymous donor has given an 18" "Obsession" with it's Zambuto mirror to the Bozeman, MT Chapter of the YVAA.

Thanks for the link to that interesting review of the two "landings" and in flight video reporting.

The hint I picked up is that the next test might involve attempting to land on a platform in the Indian Ocean.

If there is a NewMars member with insight into how to find out movements of the SpaceX barges, it would be interesting to know if one of them is moving to the Indian Ocean. That would be a long trip, so it might have started already.

On the ** other ** hand, perhaps another barge is under construction ? in India ?
