There was/were one incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.
Occasionally vendors send updates on software or new features on offer. That WAS the case today. NewMarsMember has opened an account to try Microsoft Azure using a free 1 year trial. The purpose of the account is to provide a place for upgrade of the FluxBB software currently running the forum, thanks to the generous support of the Mars Society.
Update: With the assistance of ChatGPT4, the installation of a working LAMP system into an empty Linux Ubuntu Virtual Machine is complete. The package is working, with active links to the Apache test page, and the PHP information display. Loading the database is complete. We are ready for a test of the updated forum software.
Dropbox is offering to increase free disk storage to 16 Gb in return for enlisting friends to use Dropbox.
That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.
Google announced that they have extended their policy on inactive accounts. Now they will wait two years before deleting an account.
NewMars.com is back online after an unscheduled outage for extended maintenance. Work is under way to maintain the site.
An Email Outreach campaign to former NewMars members is on hold. One member will be reviewed per day, for 3+ years.
Recordings of the 25th Anniversary Mars Society Conference are now available on YouTube.
We are happy to welcome former members back into the active community. It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned". In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access. You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below. Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply. SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address. If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to NewMarsMember@gmail.com email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.
For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects. We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions. We don't need more folks in that specialty. We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Just letting you know that when I type in www.newmars.com, I get a 404 message about not found. Quote:
404 Not Found
CIPI CIPI CAPA CAPA DUBI DUBI
A query of that phrase gave this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEDXB2bAr9o
But was able to get in by asking the question "What happened to newmars.com?" then scrolling down to a answer that included newmars.com and so then clicking on it got me here.
Weird.

For Void re #1310
Thank you for this report! I have seen the same thing. The failure seems to be limited to the level above the forums.
Hopefully our webmaster will be able to investigate to see what might have happened.
NewMars.com has been running for 20+ years as an unprotected http site. We may be forced to upgrade to https.
The hacker/scammers who put 19000+ fake accounts in our database are still pounding on the door.
Another forum that has not shut off the registration option (as SpaceNut has done) has accumulated over 20,000 fake accounts, and more worrisome, at least one of the hackers has found a was gain posting admission to the forum. That should not be possible, but obviously is ** is ** possible. There must be a bug in the 2012 era forum software.

NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were two incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning.
The Apache index.html was simplified to point to the list topic test script.

Just letting you know that a query for New Mars Forums, or https://newmars.com/forums/ and other attempts could not find this web site on the search engine bing.
But I had an old reference in my browser that worked: https://newmars.com/forums/index.php
Just letting you know you can kill this post.

NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were two incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning.
Today's email were again from Microsoft, about Azure. The decision to change to Pay-As-You-Go is risky (from my perspective) but it apparently triggers new email from Microsoft. These were about how to save money.
The Apache index.html was simplified to point to the list topic test script.
In related news, a small script to perform updates of the database was installed and tested with success. The installation is ready for a forum package, if one becomes available. An attempt to install phpBB3 is complete, and the test web site is running.
