Maser - history - applications - possible future uses

For SpaceNut ...

We did not have a topic with "maser" in the title...

Void posted a link to an article about space based solar power recently...

The article itself appears to have been written by a reporter on an assignment.  However, it reminded me of the great potential of space based solar power, and the equally great difficulty of realizing that potential.

It occurred to me that masers preceded lasers.

A quick check with Google revealed that maser technology was (apparently) used in one of the Mariner probes.  The snippet I found indicated that the output from the probe was "cleaner" than it might have been with traditional antenna methods.

In any case, this topic is available for NewMars members who might wish to add to a collection of posts about this specific technology.
