Poundbury

Back in the early 1980s, the then Prince Charles, began construction of a new town which was based upon traditional architectural styles.

Charles was appalled by the brutalist architecture that was proliferating throughout Britain, with traditional town centres demolished to make way for concrere megastructures.  He wanted a town that woukd serve as an example for how beautiful human scale architecture can be constructed in a modern world.  Poundbury has been a great success and has proven to be highly desirable with demand for housing there outstripping supply.

The success of Poundbury is something I would like to see replicated on Mars.  We have discussed underground construction for Mars.  A similar option is to assemble steel frames on the surface and heap rock and regolith over them to balance internal air pressure.  This option is desirable because it allows construction of expansive spaces, within which we can build any environment we desire.  Under the rock blister, we could build towns which are based upon traditional Earth architecture.

Re: Poundbury

For Calliban re new topic ... Best wishes for success with this concept...

This post is reserved for an index to posts members may contribute.

In the US, very large under-roof structures were built for several decades.  That style became very popular, and it seems to have faded a bit, in favor of a return to the traditional open air concept.  However, in regions subject to extended bad weather, those gigantic malls remain successful.

This topic can become a repository of links to examples of the kind of architecture you've described, for study by serious students and interested readers alike.

Update: This topic can thrive if people with the appropriate skills, experience and interest are attracted to the forum to help add significant detail.
