Benjamin Franklin is credited with first using the term "battery" in 1749 when he was experimenting with electricity. Franklin's term was a play on the military term for weapons functioning together. The capacitors he used in his experiments were glass panels coated with metal on each surface.
The word "battery" has historically been used to describe a series of similar objects grouped together to perform a function. For example, a battery of artillery. The connection with electricity stems from the similar action of these devices discharging power.
The word "battery" comes from the French word batterie, from the Old French word baterie which means "beating, thrashing, assault".

Re: Definition and History of the word Battery

I am NOT surprised to find Ben Franklin associated with the use of the word "battery"

Dr, Franklin is recognized for invention in all sorts of areas, and he was a pioneer in study of electricity.

The word appears to have been appropriated for all sorts of purposes since 1749.

Aside from the original military association, the word appears to be associated with electricity.

Re: Definition and History of the word Battery

A rechargeable is seen as stored since it can be depleted and then restored while the chemical process starts it with the value as full awaiting to be used but not so much being able to be restored or refilled. The first was a static charge much in the mode of a capacitor in a jar as plates that are separated but kept with a distance to allow for the Columb of charge to appear upon the plates.
