Photon Assisted Takeoff And Landing Systems for Space Vehicles

This topic is inspired by a vision of Void

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 86#p214786

While the vision offered by Void in the post at the link above is limited in scope to use of particles with mass to assist in landing a space craft, the concept he provides, of the planet assisting the spacecraft, is well worth extending to the massless particles.

This topic is offered for those who might wish to research and report on technology that has been developed to assist with propulsion using photons.

A great deal of work has been done.

The powerful insight inspired by the work of Void, is to use the propulsive force of photons to assist with landing.

Whereas a space craft using technology known in 2023 must expend mass to land on a planet or other large body, the beauty of Void's insight is that the planet itself might assist the spacecraft to touch down gently without expending it's own mass.

A planet may be able to muster the power needed to deliver photons in sufficient quantity to make a difference.

This forum includes members who can perform the calculations needed to develop this concept further, and I hope that happens.

We'll lead off this topic with the work of Leik Myrabo, who did pioneering work in photon propulsion at rensselaer polytechnic institute.

I am hoping forum members will contribute to this topic, to build up an understanding of what it would take to assist with landing by drawing upon resources of an entire planet.  Void has proposed using mass, and that concept deserves further development. This topic is offered for support of the photon stream  concept.

It is my understanding that laser ** slowing ** of inter-stellar spacecraft has been studied extensively.  The insight that comes to us thanks to the creative thinking of Void, is that laser propulsion might be used to gently lower a space craft to the surface of a planet or other large celestial body.

The underlying principle is to harness the resources of a planet (or other body) to assist a moving spacecraft by providing force to remove momentum, and to allow the spacecraft to achieve the same velocity as the planet itself, without expending mass or energy.

The requirement for this concept to work is that the spacecraft must possess a "parachute" of material capable of reflecting photons without being destroyed.

This topic is available for discovery and posting of work done in this area, for inter-stellar space craft acceleration and deceleration.
