Robot cooks are rapidly making their way into restaurant kitchens

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2022/08/02/rob … chens.html

Jake Brewer, Miso Robotics' chief strategy officer, said such machinery will soon be commonplace in restaurants.

"I believe that if anyone wanted to, they could go see a robot working in a restaurant in 2024, 2025," Brewer said. "You can go see robots cooking right now and that's only going to grow week over week."

Scientists can now build structures with swarms of flying drones.

https://www.globalconstructionreview.co … ng-drones/

Researchers in Switzerland and the UK have developed flying 3D printing robots that can build structures on the wing as bees and wasps do.

They say the technology could be used to erect or repair buildings in difficult spots like disaster zones or in the upper reaches of skyscrapers.

The drones cooperate to deposit layers of material guided by a digital design, adapting their movements as they go.

Re: Robots becoming useful...

Not sure if truly a good thing, I think a skilled human cook is something to appreciate and the chef from different cultures that owns and/or manages restaurants and their staffs, maybe the robots could be skilled AI robotic assistants holding on to the cuisine artform while still keeping that human element.

Re: Robots becoming useful...

For Mars_B4_Moon ... Your post #90 provides a frame for discussion if anyone is interested in pursuing it ....

I would offer (as a starting point) that there is a major difference between the mechanical activities involved in food preparation, and the planning of a delicious meal that is served on time to a variable number of humans, and which contains all the vitamins, minerals and bulk materials that are needed for a healthy diet.

I would offer the suggestion that the preparation of french fries is NOT a high level skill that a chef would be paid a handsome salary to deliver, day after day.

Re: Robots becoming useful...

The arrival of the Tesla Robot in five years provides plenty of time for creative NewMars members to think about how to use them.

As just one example of many that I hope this topic will show, I would use mine to shell peanuts for my wild life.  I live in a dense urban neighborhood, and a neighbor objects to peanut shells discarded by squirrels and various birds, so I've had to shell the salt-free peanuts before setting them out.  The labor required to shell peanuts is not high level, but it ** does ** require a surprising amount of dexterity. I am hoping the Tesla Robot will have the finger articulation capable of this simple food preparation task.

Taking the recent post by Mars_B4_Moon as a guide, I consider setting the shelled peanuts out for the "customer" is a chef's responsibility, while the shelling itself can be delegated to a kitchen assistant.   It might be argued that delivery of the "meal" to the "customer" could be delegated to a "server", but on the other hand, a chef can make those decisions, depending upon circumstances.

In general, I see automation as amplification of human capability, and arrival of the Tesla Robot in five years ** should ** result in a multiplication of human capability comparable to what we observe with the Internet and the ubiquitous cell phone.

Re: Robots becoming useful...

The Google search engine has helped NewMars members to prepare posts on a great variety of subjects.

The Bing search engine (Microsoft's entry in the field) has seemed OK to me, but it is about to get a power boost...

It was earlier reported that Microsoft is planning to boost its search engine Bing experience by leveraging chatGPT abilities to take on rival Google Search.

The recent update — along with other factors like having diversified business across the tech ecosystem — could help Microsoft surpass rival tech giants like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META), said AI and Web3 expert, Alex Valaitis.

I note with some interest that the search engine that reported this enhancement is Bing.

If any NewMars member has an experience with either of these engines that seems unusually cogent, please let us know.

I attempted to try chatGPT at openAI.com, but got a message ...

"too many redirects" ... "try deleting your cookies"

That was on a box that has been working fine for everything else, so I'm not deleting cookies.

Deleting cookies is probably a good idea but I don't think it is likely to be needed for anything else.

Re: Robots becoming useful...

For Mars_B4_Moon re #98

Thank you for the link to the report on research and development and live testing of the lizard model.

It seems to me that there is no limit to the size of this mechanism, aside from delivery mass limitations.

Your observation about payload capability seems right for a very small demonstration device.

I see no reason why this design cannot be extended to two or more meters in length.  The software to control the mechanisms should be able to transfer without any changes.

Bravo for a great find, and for all the updates you've dropped off recently!

North American companies notch another record year for robot orders

https://www.reuters.com/technology/nort … 023-02-10/

With human workers demanding higher wages and low birth rates decreasing their supply, the demand for robots is increasing. 2022 was yet another record year for robot orders in North America. The robots are expanding from assembly to material handling and other fields. Automobile industry is still the largest purchaser of industrial robots. But interest in robots from other industries is growing
