Re: 3D Printers

For Mars_B4_Moon ... re #302 ... Thank you for finding and showing this report on advancing 3D Printer capability.

Advancing to metal over (traditional) plastic is a major step.

The idea of collecting space junk to feed the printer is interesting, so I am hoping for updates on how the developers imagine that might be done.

3D Printing on the Moon is an interesting possibility .... certainly the raw materials, abundant energy, and (relatively) inexpensive transport to LEO seem to imply some significant opportunity.

Re: 3D Printers

In open space collecting and reusing whats collected make sense if you are planning on building something where you are but expending energy to go collected means you are just being a space janitor. Which then means where are you going with the collection?

Re: 3D Printers

Some may know I have a (small) shop at Shapeways...

Every now and then they update their capabilities .... here is a snippet about metal ...

Metal 3D printing allows for innovation like never before, and infinitely so. No matter the scale or volume, designers and engineers can make complex geometries previously impossible with conventional methods; in fact, many traditional manufacturers today provide 3D printing services along with their other offerings, meeting customer demand for new technology as well as allowing them to enjoy the benefits of rapid prototyping, mass customization, and optimization of industrial parts.

Interesting.  There is currently a deficit of low and mid-range computer chips here on Earth.  Not every chip has to be a high performance Pentium processor.  Most times, simple logic systems are good enough.  Chips are light enough to transport to Mars with very little cost.  But the waiting time for delivery of any specific chip will be many months.

From Meat to Moon Homes: 3D-Printers are Printing the Future
https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/meat-moon-hom … re-1700129

China is 3D printing a dam. The Yangqu hydropower plant, a 560-foot-tall dam on the Tibetan plateau, will be completed within two years, officials say. Built completely by robots, this will be the world's largest-ever 3D printing project. Like much of what China does, it goes big or stays home, and once again, the Middle Kingdom is wowing the world by embarking on another record-breaking 'Great Wall' mission. But just the fact that 3D printing technology has advanced far enough to print a structure as large as a 590-foot-tall dam is in itself astonishing. The only possibly concerning element of the Chinese massive printing project is the complete exclusion of human workers. Should the Chinese be successful in relying on 100% robotic construction, some will see it as a harbinger of things to come for many workers – even in what is traditionally thought of as a human labor-intensive industry such as construction. That said, setting aside concerns about robots and jobs, the answer to "How will 3D printing change the future?" increasingly seems to be: in every single possible way imaginable.

"We're big fans of SpaceX and Starship. But there's got to be more than one company working at this."
https://futurism.com/spacex-tom-mueller … -elon-musk

A pair of space startups have teamed up to launch the first-ever private mission to Mars — a highly ambitious plan, Ars Technica reports, given the fact that neither of the two have yet launched a single rocket.

The companies, rocket company Relativity Space, and payload delivery service Impulse Space, announced the joint venture today, promising the "first commercial payload" to Mars using Relativity’s "fully reusable, entirely 3D printed launch vehicle, Terran R."

While the startups have a long way to go to successfully launch a mission to Mars — let alone safely land anything on the planet — they do have some serious engineering experience to work from.

Impulse was founded by Tom Mueller in September of last year, who has the rare distinction of being the very first employee that SpaceX hired almost two decades ago.

Re: 3D Printers

The link below may be another look at the news highlighted by Mars_B4_Moon in #320

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technolo … 6b7c9c41db

In a blog post, the academics explained the development could allow for essential tools and rocket parts to be manufactured on Mars itself, solving a variety of problems associated with the need to transport heavy payloads to the Red Planet.

“In space, 3D printing is something that has to happen if we want to think of a manned mission because we really cannot carry everything from here,” explained Amit Bandyopadhyay, a professor at WSU. “And if we forgot something, we cannot come back to get it.”

3D printing on Mars
Not only are space missions limited by cargo capacity, but carrying heavy materials into space is also exceptionally costly. As explained in the blog post, it costs in the region of $54,000 for a NASA shuttle to place just one kilo of material into Earth’s orbit, let alone transporting it to Mars.

Astronauts could 3D print tools and parts from titanium and Mars dust
https://newatlas.com/materials/3d-print … mars-dust/

Scientists Are 3D Printing Fake Moon Dust Into Useful Objects
https://futurism.com/scientists-europe- … th-objects
The idea is that a moon colony will be able to make its own stuff.

The scientists partnered with Austrian company Lithoz to develop a 3D printing technology that first mixes the regolith with a special kind of glue that hardens when exposed to light. Then they 3D print it into a particular shape and bake it inside an oven — similarly to how ceramics are hardened inside a kiln.

“If one needs to print tools or machinery parts to replace broken parts on a lunar base, precision in the dimensions and shape of the printed items will be vital," says Advenit Makya, an ESA engineer working on the project in an ESA blog post.
