Re: Food for Thought, what does a garden need to grow

It's a reasonable working assumption that whatever is grown on Earth can be grown on Mars either in Earth-replicating facilities or specialist high CO2 facilities, with or without hydroponic, aquaponic and aeroponic technologies. Pollination may be an issue - but gravity is unlikely to be, I feel, given how many different plants have been grown in zero G.

We should start with the things that we know have been grown successfully in farm towers and Antarctic bases e.g. lettuce and other salads. Nutritious bean shoots should also be an easy early win.

There's no big rush with at least 500 tons of supplies coming in on Starships every two years. Most of the basic food stuffs - grains, pasta, dairy produce, meat and so on - can be imported in for a few years, maybe even a couple of decades before it becomes necessary to supply the growing Mars population via Mars ISRU  agriculture.

Re: Food for Thought, what does a garden need to grow

I think that as far as food growth goes we need to solve what needs to be planted when in order to keep a sustainable pattern of foods for use and not one crop of another as we need many food groups to stay healthy.
Its that multiple crop that takes a foot print planning from seedling planting to harvest as we need to be able to set the next crops to be planted once we do harvest what is already growing as we do have a limited area to grow food within.

Sure is easier to make foods when the crops can produce what you need rather than take it with you. Yum...

Ingredients

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick/63 grams) unsalted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for greasing the pan and melted for brushing
    1 1/2 cups (360 milliliters) whole milk
    1/4 cup (50 grams) sugar
    4 1/2 cups (643 grams) unbleached all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (one 7.5-gram/0.25-ounce packet)
    1 teaspoon kosher salt
    2 large eggs

Need some substitute eggs...

RobertDyck has placed other recipes in a variety of topics but a good chef needs lots of them to keep smiles on there faces.

That Mossarium design

Fish, Snails, Caribou, Shrimp and Pikas relative of the Rabbit.

What We Can Learn From Moss — Mosses can grow in space, survive in ice for 1500 years, clean up oil spills, remove arsenic from water, and grow everywhere on Earth. Moss teaches us there are no limits to how versatile an organism can be.
