Re: China beginning a space race? - Fallout from NASA's China Snub

Not sure how the lunar night trick worked but this could have been something needed for mars...

A lunar day equals 14 days on Earth, and a lunar night is the same length. The Chang'e-4 probe switched to a dormant mode during the lunar night due to the lack of solar power.

China's Chang'e-4 probe survives 600 Earth days on Moon's far side

Chang'e-4 probe have completed work for the 21st lunar day on the far side of the moon and is currently in dormant mode during the lunar night due to lack of solar power. The rover Yutu-2, or Jade Rabbit-2, has far exceeded its three-month design lifespan, becoming the longest-working lunar rover on the moon.

Re: China beginning a space race? - Fallout from NASA's China Snub

It appears that snubbing china back then has turned into a bonus for china...
China prepping for mission to bring back material from moon

The mission’s key task is to drill 2 meters (almost 7 feet) beneath the moon’s surface and scoop up about 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of rocks and other debris to be brought back to Earth, according to NASA. That would offer the first opportunity to scientists to study newly obtained lunar material since the American and Russian missions of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Chang’e 5 lander’s time on the moon is scheduled to be short and sweet. It can only stay one lunar daytime, or about 14 Earth days, because it lacks the radioisotope heating units to withstand the moon’s freezing nights.

The lander will dig for materials with its drill and robotic arm and transfer them to what’s called an ascender, which will lift off from the moon and dock with the “service capsule.” The materials will then be moved to the return capsule for the trip home to Earth.

Re: China beginning a space race? - Fallout from NASA's China Snub

They are currently about 20 years behind NASA and NASA are 20 years behind Space X, if Space X are on the right track (and I believe they are). Doesn't mean they can't catch up in 5 years because they have huge resources but getting to Mars is more than just about the application of brute force. As with Apollo, you need an open mind as well as an open cheque book.

NASA Boss Bill Nelson Says China 'Aggressive Competitor' After Mars Landing

https://www.newsweek.com/nasa-bill-nels … ng-1593241
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said China's successful rover landing on Mars is a warning to the U.S. government that the space agency faces stiff competition in the future.

Testifying before the House Appropriations subcommittee on the president's 2022 space-related budget request, Nelson called China's space program "a very aggressive competitor," saying NASA now realises it doesn't own the lunar surface.

China's space agency landed a rover on Mars over the weekend, making it the second country ever to do so, after the U.S. Nelson issued a message of congratulations in a statement published by NASA on Wednesday.

He said: "As the international scientific community of robotic explorers on Mars grows, the United States and the world look forward to the discoveries Zhurong will make to advance humanity's knowledge of the Red Planet."

Nelson struck a rather different tone on China's achievement while testifying that same day, reflecting on the country's plans to explore the moon and the pace of the U.S. program.

He told the assembled congressmen: "They are getting ready, and have already publicly announced, that they want to send three big landers to the South Pole of the moon, and that's where the water is. And we are still a year or two away from a much smaller lander going there.

"What I'm saying is, we're suddenly realising that we don't own all of this. And it is a very aggressive competitor."

Nelson uses Chinese Mars landing as a warning to Congress
https://spacenews.com/nelson-uses-chine … -congress/

“I want you to see this photograph,” he said, brandishing one of the Zhurong images. He argued that the landing was evidence that China was serious about sending spacecraft to both the Moon and Mars, including, eventually, human missions. “I think that’s now adding a new element as to whether or not we want to get serious and get a lot of activity going in landing humans back on the surface of the moon.”

Some news items and science feats each year from China, maybe maybe month but I do not believe the Chinese are racing... yet
Russia may have actually got their first with a craft that stayed alive for more than 100 seconds and didn't return much data, as for 'Firsts' perhaps both NASA and CNSA have an obvious interest in discounting the Russian Mars program.
However there is that superstition of a Mars curse, it seems to be unlucky for some, not an easy landing.

Only NASA JPL and China have mastered landing on Mars.

NASA statement

NASA Statement on China’s Zhurong Mars Rover Photos

NASA Administrator Sen. Bill Nelson issued the following statement Wednesday after the China National Space Administration’s release of the first photos from the Zhurong Mars rover:

“Congratulations to the China National Space Administration on receiving the first images from the Zhurong Mars rover!” Nelson said. “As the international scientific community of robotic explorers on Mars grows, the United States and the world look forward to the discoveries Zhurong will make to advance humanity’s knowledge of the Red Planet. I look forward to future international discoveries, which will help inform and develop the capabilities needed to land human boots on Mars.”

CNSA’s successful landing of the Zhurong rover last week makes it only the second nation to ever land successfully on Mars. Zhurong joins active NASA missions – the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers and Insight Lander – in exploring the surface of the Red Planet.

China is gaining ground in space. Should the US be concerned?
https://www.space.com/china-space-advances-us-concerns

Nelson is not alone in his concern. Melroy was questioned about China's activity in space during a Senate hearing on May 20 andpointed to China's numerous recent achievements. "It's not just the landing on Mars, which is very impressive, but also a couple of landings on the moon, and of course the new construction starting of a low Earth orbit space station," Melroy said.

"China has made their goals very clear — to take away space superiority from the United States," she added.

Not everyone feels the same way.

"I think China is a long way from taking away space superiority," Burbach said. Rather, he added, "I think China is moving into the number two slot if there's a global pecking order for space capabilities." Burbach also raised the issue of what "space superiority" means, as "if we are talking about who does the most exciting or most challenging [things in space], I think the U.S. still is in a pretty good position."

China is good at copying things and of course that means getting the needed information by alternative means.

We lost our chance to have china as a partner long ago without something being traded to gain there trust....

Chinese university completes space-based solar power ground test facility

https://spacenews.com/chinese-universit … -facility/

The facility is designed to collect solar energy and convert it into direct current electricity. This is to then be converted into microwaves for transmission via an antenna over a distance of 55 meters.

It includes technologies for concentrating light and photoelectric conversion, conversion of energy into microwaves, microwave transmission and waveform optimization, microwave beam aiming measurement and control, and microwave reception and rectification.

The work was led by Academician Duan Baoyan, a leading Chinese expert in SBSP. Duan is a co-author of the proposed SSPS-OMEGA (Orb-Shape Membrane Energy Gathering Array) concentrator system for generating electricity in geostationary orbit. The new facility is designed to test and verify technology for the OMEGA system.

“The research on space solar power is currently a hot spot in the world,” Duan said in the press release. He noted however that the realization of SBSP would take generations.

“To use an analogy, heaven and earth transmission is like common prosperity,” Duan said, in a modified machine translation of the statement. “That is the ultimate goal and must take many years and many people to achieve it, but we can start working on it now and start from where it is most likely to be achieved.”

The OMEGA modular system is presented in comparison and contrast to NASA’s proposed SPS-ALPHA (Solar Power Satellite via Arbitrarily Large Phased Array) project.

China’s Next Lunar Relay Satellite Blasts Off
https://www.universetoday.com/166252/ch … lasts-off/
Communication between spacecraft relies upon line of site technology, if anything is in the way, communication isn’t possible. Exploration of the far side of the Moon is a great example where future explorers would be unable to communicate directly with Earth.  The only way around this is to use relay satellites and the Chinese Space Agency is on the case. The first Queqiao-1 was able to co-ordinate communications with Chang’e-4 landers and now they are sending Queqiao-2 to support the Change’e-6 mission.
