Re: Artificial Intelligence AI

First, thanks to Mars_B4_Moon for all the searching and posting of interesting/valuable links with brief descriptions of how they might be helpful.

Second, for anyone in the forum who might be thinking of learning about machine learning, or perhaps even venturing into a career using it, here is a snippet from one of the links provided by Mars_B4_Moon:

Today’s BCI users have much finer control and access to a wider range of skills. In part, this is because researchers began to implant multiple BCIs in different brain areas of the user and devised new ways to identify useful signals. But Hochberg says the biggest boost has come from machine learning, which has improved the ability to decode neural activity. Rather than trying to understand what activity patterns mean, machine learning simply identifies and links patterns to a user’s intention.

Machine learning is applicable to business operations.  Patterns of customer activity, or of financial transaction risks, are examples of fields in which machine learning is worth while for businesses.

Smarter satellites: ESA Discovery accelerates AI in space
https://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Smar … e_999.html
Could we capitalise on the Earth-based digital revolution to make our satellites smarter? ESA Discovery is funding 12 projects that will explore the potential of applying the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing paradigms to make satellites more reactive, agile and autonomous. This could generate new practical applications that support life on Earth and our exploration of other planets.

Over the last decade, rapid advances in computing techniques, combined with exponential growth in the amount of data being collected, have led to a true revolution of AI feeding on big data on Earth.

'Milley: West Point Cadets Should Be Ready for Robot, Drone-led Wars'
https://www.voanews.com/a/milley-west-p … 83679.html

I understand we are seeing war everywhere so perhaps there is some logic to be wary or fearful of what AI might bring.

So what happens when political idiots get freaked out by reality and start screaming everything in the entire universe is 'RACIST'

AI can predict people's race from X-Ray images, and scientists are concerned
https://www.thesciverse.com/2022/05/ai- … x-ray.html

meh... I can too, I can almost tell you with a certain degree of accuracy any race region a person is from by looking at their skull and I don't need a super-computer thingy. It's called having a photographers eye or painters eye or anatomy or think like a Cop doing forensic science. Labeling someone accurate of mixed ethnicity is difficult because they have cross-features which are less 'pure' looking characteristics, however find bits of an arm or, hip, or skull or thing bone and you can re-build the person, using your logic and imagination. People have done this for many many years before computers, you had  Forensic Sketch Artists rebuilding 50,000 year old Cavemen and Cavewomen, it was something detectives did regular to identify the racial ethnic character traits of a person BEFORE any artificial intelligence or DNA science.
Do you think hundreds of years ago da Vinci or Michelangelo, people from a time when a Church was the local Pravda Ministry of Information Political Broadcast Temple, back when people robbed graves to study and discover the secrets within bodies and the internal art and anatomy of man, during these times would they da Vinci or Michelangelo have been utterly freaked out with themselves because their eyes could see the difference in people?

Could computer algorithms mistakenly apply racial bias when analysing photographs like these?

Racial bias? I never really understood the Nu-Left hang up and issue with race, its like they fear that people might be different? An Ethnic Race is an Ethnic Race much like a a Mouse is a Mouse or Chihuahua a Chihuahua or a Rat is a Rat or a Wolf is a Wolf or a Rabbit is a Rabbit or a Wolf is a Wolf or a Hare is a Hare, certain races might have certain 'conditions' people from Asia might not take diary products, Caucasian Whites with different bones, living near seas and lakes and rivers might float better than Africans, the Congoid Nilotic African Black Negroid type might jump better, they could play basketball better, they might have a different brain size and Lower IQ ....not all these traits are true within every ethnicity you do have freaks people who are super smart compared to others, taller or smaller compared to others but why be fearful of the mathematical number and reality of scientific biological averages? However I don't get the political fear of reality? Are they simply concerned the entire human condition is not blended into some mongrel gray goo brown tanned white yellow mongrel races of a mixed races together, where no person has no trait that makes them different and we are all like multi colored multi political party gray faced looking robots from some video game?
I don't see what's making people so politically stupid its like they fear reality likes its some 'taboo' want to be scientifically retarded they want to believe everything is the same? and ignore historical and biological reality, maybe its the tv and politics or maybe a fear of some scifi  dystopia movie. Maybe they fear an imagined reality that some AI or government is going to chase down people and massacre and genocide them like Stalin did to his own, or Hitler or like PolPot did in Asia, or Africans did to each others races in the Congo? Maybe they fear some fictional thing which has never happened or yet to happen?

Take this picture.

One of these skulls is a Australian Black Aboriginal, the other skull is a Asian Yellow Mongoloid maybe Japanese or Chinese type skull ...don't get freaked out with yourself if your brain can tell the difference, can see there is something different about these bones.
Knowing the difference, and knowing some groups of people sometimes have different traits to other peoples does not mean you are suddenly going to run around doing massacres or go evil genocidal, seeing the difference between these bones does not mean you will start doing atrocity and wipe out millions upon million of people.
People are sometimes different and I don't understand the political fear of that simple scientific biological reality.

https://anopic.us/g4LWMioQ2plivLiInDoko … c8Uu4e.jpg

Even when the scans were taken from people of the same age and sex, the AI was able to predict the patient's claimed racial identification on these photos with amazing accuracy. With some groups of photos, the system achieved 90% accuracy.

I'm guessing I could do it with 95% better than an expensive AI machine
Science doesn't have a political bias, it is neutral and yet it is humans and their political madness that makes the problems of fear and book burning and war and murder?

I picked up an impression from the flood of reporting that the posts may NOT have been public.

It might be argued that a private web site is "public" in the sense that members can see the posts.

NewMars is "public" in the sense that any Earth citizen in any location with Open Internet can see the posts.

He was on 'Yubo' with his personal ID, Yubo is a French social networking app also used in the US designed to "meet new people" and create a sense of community.
https://social.techcrunch.com/2019/06/1 … cializing/

Messages Salvador Ramos sent to strangers online have begun to surface.
In them, he tells a person to kill herself, boasts about buying a gun, and in one online audio chatroom he comments that people deserve "to get raped".
Ramos had a number of social media accounts and used the same photos and usernames on them.
He was particularly active on an app called Yubo. It enables users to make new friends with people based on their location.
https://news.sky.com/story/texas-school … s-12621863
Screenshots show his account was verified with a yellow tick. This means he submitted evidence of his identity, including an official form of ID and confirmation he matches his photos.
He used at least two usernames on his accounts. He initially used his real name, but later changed it to "TheBiggestOpp", a username that also appears on his Instagram and TikTok accounts.
Ramos wanted people to follow him on his different social accounts. This screenshot of his Yubo profile promotes his Instagram username.
A 15-year-old girl in Germany told CNN she met Ramos through Yubo....
Ramos texted the girl to say he had shot his grandma and was going to "shoot up an elementary school".
Yubo users have alleged Ramos abused animals and livestreamed it on the platform, although no screenshots or recordings of this have surfaced.
He sent aggressive messages on the app. He told one girl on Valentine's Day that he would worship her before saying she should jump off a bridge.

Instagram Photos of Guns Emerge
https://heavy.com/news/salvador-ramos-i … ial-media/
The account included two selfies of a teen who appears to be the shooter, along with photos of two rifles. Another photo showed a person holding a gun magazine in his lap. The account followed multiple Instagram users confirmed by Heavy to be Uvalde High School students.
Another Instagram user shared messages she said the gunman sent her days before the shooting. That account was tagged by the gunman in his lone Instagram post. The Instagram user said in an Instagram story posted after the shooting that she does not live in Texas and does not know the shooter personally.

Ramos, who turned 18 last week, started writing on Facebook “approximately 30 minutes before reaching the school,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said of the “demented person” who brought “evil” to Uvalde.
“The first post … said, ‘I’m going to shoot my grandmother.’ The second post was, ‘I shot my grandmother,'” Abbott said of Ramos’ critically injured 66-year-old relative, Cecilia, who was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital.
“The third post, maybe less than 15 minutes before arriving at the school, was, ‘I’m going to shoot an elementary school,'” Abbott said.
https://nypost.com/2022/05/25/texas-sch … -facebook/
Facebook’s parent company, Meta, later insisted that “messages Gov. Abbott described were private one-to-one text messages that were discovered after the terrible tragedy occurred.”

Uvalde School officials say they had been monitoring its students' social media pages using an advanced AI-based service called Social Sentinel, designed to recognize signals of potential harm found in digital conversations.
The district revealed Monday it had been using the platform 'to monitor all social media with a connection to Uvalde as a measure to identify any possible threats that might be made against students and or staff within the school district.'

Canadian Cops shoot Possible Gunman

A man was killed in Canada simply because he was walking down the street with a rifle near a school....well not exactly near maybe
Having a gun in Canada 130 metres away is an automatic death sentence?

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/man-fatally- … -1.5919803

The term "BB gun" is frequently used incorrectly to describe airsoft guns, which shoot plastic pellets (also often incorrectly referred to as "BBs") that are larger (usually 6 mm or 0.24 in in diameter) but much less dense than metal BBs, and have significantly lower ballistic performance. Toy Air gun laws vary widely by local jurisdiction and country.
In Canada the sentence is Death?

At a press conference  Toronto police chief James Ramer called the incident "traumatic" for all involved.

The SIU confirmed to CTV News Toronto Thursday evening that a BB gun was recovered at the scene.

"Whether the man was holding it or not, I'm not entirely certain at this point. But that will be something that the SIU investigators will be looking at," said Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the province's police watchdog.

When asked if there was an exchange of gunshots between police and the man, Denette said the available information does not indicate that the man fired at officers.

Texas school shooter Salvador Ramos sent social media messages prior to killings
https://www.al.com/news/2022/05/texas-s … firms.html

Speaking at a press conference Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, used an AR-15 in Tuesday’s attack at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. About 30 minutes before the shooting, Ramos made the first of three social media posts. According to the governor, the teenager posted that he was going to shoot his grandmother, then that he had shot the woman.
The third message, posted about 15 minutes before Ramos began massacring the pupils, read: “I’m going to shoot an elementary school.”
Investigators believe Ramos posted photos on Instagram of two guns he used in the shooting, and they were examining whether he made statements online alluding to the attack in the hours before the assault, a law enforcement official said.

Re: Artificial Intelligence AI

Questions arise on killer’s 90 minutes
https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/202 … 0-minutes/

It was 11:28 a.m. when the Ford pickup slammed into a ditch behind the low-slung Texas school and the driver jumped out carrying an AR-15-style rifle.

Twelve minutes after that, authorities say, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos was in the hallways of Robb Elementary School. Soon he entered a fourth grade classroom. And there, he killed 19 schoolchildren and two teachers.

At 12:58 p.m., law enforcement radio chatter said Ramos had been killed and the siege was over.

What happened during those 90 minutes in a working-class neighborhood near the edge of the little town of Uvalde has fueled mounting public anger and scrutiny over law enforcement's response to Tuesday's rampage.

The Uvalde school district, like many across the country, was also using measures connected to students' well-being in its efforts to prevent violence, documents showed. The district used software called Social Sentinel, which monitors students' social media posts for threats, and an app called STOPit, which allows anonymous reports of bullying.

Ron Avi Astor, an expert on school violence at UCLA, said that while emotional supports have improved school climate broadly, those strategies -- as well as the presence of campus police officers -- have been insufficient to prevent suicidal, deeply troubled young men from carrying out attacks.

The focus, he said, should be on referring high-risk individuals to mental health treatment while preventing them from buying or owning guns.

"We have to start talking about shooters and shootings differently," he added.

"The first security issue relates to using these gibberish prompts as backdoor adversarial attacks or ways to circumvent filter," he wrote in his paper. "Currently, Natural Language Processing systems filter text prompts that violate the policy rules and gibberish prompts may be used to bypass these filters."

"More importantly, absurd prompts that consistently generate images challenge our confidence in these big generative models."

However – though other algorithms have been shown to create their own languages – this paper has not been peer-reviewed yet, and other researchers are questioning Darras' claims. Research Analyst Benjamin Hilton asked the generator to show two whales talking about food, with subtitles. After the first few results did not return decipherable text, gibberish or not, he kept going until he did.

"What do I think?" Hilton wrote on Twitter. "'Evve waeles' is either nonsense, or a corruption of the word 'whales'. Giannis got lucky when his whales said 'Wa ch zod rea' and that happened to generate pictures of food."

Moreover, adding other phrases like "3D render" to other of the phrases gives different results, suggesting that they do not consistently mean the same thing.

A Face Search Engine Anyone Can Use Is Alarmingly Accurate
https://dnyuz.com/2022/05/26/a-face-sea … -accurate/

PimEyes found photos of every person, some that the journalists had never seen before, even when they were wearing sunglasses or a mask, or their face was turned away from the camera, in the image used to conduct the search.

...

Unlike Clearview AI, a similar facial recognition tool available only to law enforcement, PimEyes does not include results from social media sites. The sometimes surprising images that PimEyes surfaced came instead from news articles, wedding photography pages, review sites, blogs and pornography sites. Most of the matches for the dozen journalists’ faces were correct. For the women, the incorrect photos often came from pornography sites, which was unsettling in the suggestion that it could be them. (To be clear, it was not them.)

Mr. Gobronidze grew up in the shadow of military conflict. His kindergarten was bombed during the civil war that ensued after Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The country was effectively cut off from the world in 2008 when Russia invaded and the internet went down. The experiences inspired him to study the role of technological dominance in national security.

Tatia Dolidze, a colleague of Mr. Gobronidze’s at European University, described him as “curious” and “stubborn,” and said she had been surprised when he told her that he was buying a face search engine.

“It was difficult to imagine Giorgi as a businessman,” Ms. Dolidze said by email.

Now he is a businessman who owns a company steeped in controversy, primarily around whether we have any special right of control over images of us that we never expected to be found this way. Mr. Gobronidze said facial recognition technology would be used to control people if governments and big companies had the only access to it.

And he is imagining a world where facial recognition is accessible to anyone.

Axon’s AI Ethics Board resigns over plan to surveil schools with armed drones

https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/06/axons … ed-drones/

'Don’t taze me drone'

flying taser problem...ethics halted plans this time.

What will happen in mix of Big Gov and Big Mega Corp Private Owned Society, Corporate Holy Tea Experiment Pennsylvania when  Blackwell was appointed in an unsuccessful attempt to impose an English government and was roundly ignored by Quaker settlers, the Corporate Theocratic islamist Monarchs of Dubai, the city state of Portuguese Macau in its later years but all these guys without the scifi robots. When a BigGov town is fully controlled by a single MegaCorp company with robots what will happen? You have a company town,  price gouged, private police, sponsored political religion propaganda and used debt bondage to keep their employees inside that political cage, howeevr towns without souls don't always last when the proverbial hits the fan a town can become a Dying Town or Ghost Town. Robots with tasers outside your kids school? Things would never go like that Sixteen Tons song, Simpsons toon, Twins Peaks or Judge Dredd's The "Cursed Earth"? Cultural situation of Dystopia Terminator Robocop to it? You can always paint up War Machine with power rangers cartoon colors for the kids, give the robot dogs a cute bark but a stronger bite. It's in video games and scifi already Sam & Max Freelance Police or Corporate Private MegaCorp Police. As the movie Blade Runner or Heinlein or those weird guys at Bilderberg and Davos and occultists at Bohemian Grove  said you will own Nothing int he new Privately Owned Society. Your new Jedi, Starfleet guy or SithLord or Sheriff dies don't worry you can rebuild him...why not try to make your Dog the Bounty Hunter bullet proof next time or put some NASCAR or NFL corporate political logo on the side? Corporate-Sponsored  machine heroes are coming to save the day,

Re: Artificial Intelligence AI

For Mars_B4_Moon re #49

Thanks for your discoveries posted in #49, and for all the links and comments you've been providing.

I was surprised (but pleased) to see the decision by Axon's Ethics staff (one person?) to resign in protest, but I suspect that was just a gesture, since management will no doubt receive a contract to develop working models for military use, if not for school surveillance.

Science Fiction writers whose works have crossed my path have imagined a future in which journalists/reporters employ smart drones to "get the story" without the risk of showing up in dangerous places in person.  Please keep a watch for any hints of developments along those lines.
