The high ground control to space

At one time the thought was that if the military controlled the high ground that you would win in any war. That subsided to one of detante and friendly cooperation to which we enjoy other than going around in LEO for the most part.
Peace these days those does seem a bit fleeting as of late. So long as its a peace keeping force no problem.

Congressmen Propose a New Military Branch: The 'US Space Corps'

This week, the House Armed Services Committee voted 60 to 1 in favor of the creation of a new military branch to be called the United States Space Corps... The United States Space Corps would be the first new branch of the military since 1947

Congress Could Be Launching a New Branch of the Military... Into Space

Congress is proposing a "Space Corps" that would potentially fight in space and protect U.S. assets in orbit.

Kind of comical the image with this story....
baecfd0456300095397c444eacea09ad

But the real story is as follows
Creating real starship troopers will add to existing $45 billion military space cost

A US congressional committee is proposing that the US armed forces add a new military branch called the United States Space Corps. If this is passed it would be the first new branch of the armed forces since the Air Force was created in 1947. The Space Corp would provide “combat-ready space forces” that enable the commanders of the combatant commands to fight and win wars. The Space Corps would fall under the Air Force in the same way the Marine Corps works with the Navy. The 2018 Air Force space budget: it grew at least $1.5 billion. That’s a large increase considering the total budget request is $10.4 billion. For perspective, the entire Defense Department space budget last year — known as

https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2017/07/c … dgets.html

The DOD has been spending $25-30 billion per year on space. There is also the National Reconnaissance office (about $15 billion) and the National Geospatial intelligence office (about $2-5 billion). The military and spy satellites and other non-NASA space activities are about 2 to 3 times as much as NASA budget. This level of spending is before a large human or robotic space corp is created.

The Space Corp will probably add more bureaucracy and more spending.

The US Marines have been $35 to 45 billion of the Navy budget.

The Space related US military and Spy agency budgets are already over $45 billion per year.

But I guess the extra costs will be worth it so that we can defeat the bugs.

Things that fall under space:

So where is all of the money coming from.????

The Space Review article In support of a forming a US Space Corps now

The X-37B spaceplane on the runway at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center after landing May 7. Would efforts like the X-37B be better off under the control of a separate Space Corps in order to best meet national security space needs?

Not bad for a project tossed out when constellation was started....

Re: The high ground control to space

What's interesting is if you dig far enough into the material, the purpose is becomes self evident. In any conflict, adversaries will look to gain a strategic advantage by curtailing or denying a strength of their foe. The counter then is to plan a step ahead and look for ways to mitigate any disruption to your tactical or strategic advantage.

Anti-sat and other similar technologies look to degrade space based assets. Since these are fast reaction first strike weapons, and the target assets (read sats) are not easily hardened, the goal is to provide on-demand launch capability to redeploy/replace lost systems. Part of X37B mission is to provide the military the capability to replace lost sat assets, or based on the mission, recover/attack other assets.

Space corps is a natural evolution of the military arm, similar to what we are seeing with cyber warfare.  The creation of another formal arm will allow it to compete for scare resources, so instead of the airforce making a biased choice, space can argue as a peer (so the theory goes). More than likely airforce and navy will see a budget reduction with any space arm being primarily a UAV or logistical support arm.

There will be no space marines with pew-pew guns.

Re: The high ground control to space

Why the military's Space Corps isn't dead yet

Congress will not create a new branch of the military dedicated to space this year, but lawmakers who support the move and defense experts say it’s only a matter of time. National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) does make several changes that lay the groundwork for the so-called Space Corps to become a reality in the near future.

The House version of the NDAA would have created a separate branch of the military dedicated to space known as Space Corps. But the White House, Pentagon and the Senate fiercely opposed the Space Corps plan. They acknowledged the United States needs to do better in space, but said creating a new military branch would be premature and could just add more bureaucracy that ultimately hinders the military’s space operations.

The most consequential move the NDAA makes toward eventually setting up a space branch is the independent study.

As Clark noted the Air Force continuating of the X37B is an important to making sure that the US does keep its control of the high ground.

Re: The high ground control to space

I think StratoLaunch must play some part in our assured access program.  We need affordable anytime launch vehicles and low cost short life cube satellites meant to be regularly replaced and manufactured in batches.  Each successive batch can take advantage of the latest improvements to sensor and communication technology, rather than having expensive and protracted develop-deploy-maintain cycles.  It's a more robust space defense model for keeping the specialists gainfully employed and it also reduces the effects of failures or combat losses from ASAT weapons.

These missile defense systems that attempt to hit incoming warheads with a missile are also hideously expensive and difficult to effectively employ.  We need to spend a lot more money on making rail guns operational systems using guided projectiles that put shrapnel into the flight path of the incoming warhead like a giant hypersonic shotgun blast.  After that, MW class solid state lasers mounted to aircraft like B-1 bombers are next in line for development and deployment.

There will always be special missions and vehicles or other hardware required, but those use cases should be exceptions to the overwhelming majority of defense missions.  The "new space" model is using commodity hardware that merely runs special software for national security purposes.

For this new "Space Corps" proposal to be of any utility, it must absorb the resources scattered throughout the US military and intelligence infrastructure at USAF, USN, NRO, and NSA.  After that, it must act like an integrated part of the military that provides services on demand.  That's a tall order for such a unit to fill, immediately after the command stands up.  Anyway, it looks like that's not going to happen in the near future.

Trump praises military, calls for 'Space Force' as new branch of armed forces

President Trump praised members of the military Tuesday, saying the administration will give them the “largest pay raise in over a decade,” while touting successes around the globe, and even suggesting the creation of a new military branch — the “Space Force.”

The president spoke to thousands of military men and women at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, Calif., Tuesday, following his visit to review border wall prototypes.

“I have a message for you straight from the heart of the American people, and you know what that is — we support you, we love you and we will always have your back like you have ours,” Trump said, also praising military spouses and families for their service.

“For too long, the men and women of the United States Armed Forces have been asked to do more with less,” Trump said, listing “underinvestment,” deferred modernization and maintenance, old equipment and having “fewer ships than we should, fewer planes than we should, and fewer of you than we should.”

“Today I am very proud to report that all of that is changing, and as you have seen, all of that is changing quickly,” Trump said, noting that his administration sees “peace through strength.”

“I’m talking the largest military buildup since Ronald Reagan, and one of the largest buildups in the history of our nation,” Trump said, noting that the proposed military budget would be $716 billion in 2019. “We are investing in the greatest weapon, the most beautiful weapon. Our most brilliant weapon — you.”

Re: The high ground control to space

The weaponization of space and creation of space debris is a serious problem for all people on Earth who use space tech. I also believe this isn't the first weaponization by Russia, they in USSR times normally carried a gun in case their cosmonauts landed off track in the wilds of Siberia, and the Salyut 3, although  a "civilian" station was equipped with a "self-defence" gun which had been designed for use aboard the station,  some report it was a 23 mm Nudelman aircraft cannon, or possibly a Nudelman NR-30 30 mm gun.

Reagan called upon American scientists and engineers to develop a system that would make Nukes obsolete with new fringe George Lucas Luke Skywalker ideas however some ideas were real and not fringe science, people have started blowing up satellites in ASAT tests and elements of the program reemerged in 2019 with the Space Development Agency (SDA)
