Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

I am looking for new members who are blessed with enough time and energy to participate for some time into the future.

We are also happy to welcome former members back into the active community.  It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned".  In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.

Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts.  Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool.  If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access.  You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below.  Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply.  SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.

GW Johnson has extended an invitation to readers of his ExRocketman blog, to visit NewMars. If anyone is interested in opening an account, just drop a note to the portal.

GW Johnson gave a presentation to the North Houston NSS on April 9th. This was a follow up to the Large Ship presentation given by RobertDyck on March 12th. Both presentations are available for viewing from northhoustonspace.org.

The next Zoom meeting(s) is/are scheduled for (Next) Sunday.  We will be using the Professional Mars Society account.
Note: The Mars Society Zoom account is reserved for 7 PM Pacific Time on the Second Sunday of each month.
May 8th ** is ** the Second Sunday, so the NewMars Zoom will be limited to two hours.

On March 13th, the Seattle Chapter kindly invited NewMars Zoom attendees to join their meeting.  I was impressed by the depth and quality of the discussions, and hope we may be invited to future meetings.

Time for early (European) meeting: 19:00 UTC <<== No host is booked. If you would like to see this meeting in action, say so.

Time for project meeting: To be determined as needed

Time for Early US/Canada/Mexico meeting: 0:00 UTC Monday <<== kbd512 is host for this event. This is an all-subjects open meeting.

Daylight Savings time took effect in the US ... The meeting hosted by kbd512 starts at Midnight UTC, and the NightOwl starts at the originally advertised time of 1 AM UTC.

NightOwl meeting: This is 1 hour into the Evening Zoom, and potentially of interest to Hawaii members.

Request: Please try to connect to the Zoom session shortly after it opens, as a courtesy to the host.

Update as of 2022/02/22 -- Scheduling of Attendance

Request: Please post (or email) your intention to attend a Zoom session, as a courtesy to the host.

The first Zoom meeting for NewMars members was held Monday November 8th, 2021 at 1 AM UTC.  It lasted for well over 4 hours.

There are nearly 8 billion people on Earth these days, and several billion have access to the Internet.  This forum is accessible to ** every ** Earth citizen with Internet access.  We ** know ** the site is of interest to spammers! Hopefully it is of interest to others who want to use their time more productively.

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership.  Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.

We have 11,199 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through  18,344 are waiting for finishing touches.  We have run out of Usernames that may be eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members. We are halfway through a campaign to repair posts that contain artifacts that prevent proper display.  Scan of 77,000 posts out of 77,000 were completed and the end point was found. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in place.  Code to perform updates is finished and tested.

Approval to proceed IS granted, the project will resume in December, 2021.

Equipment to be used for the update series was tested and found ready to begin work on December 1st. The process will last through July of 2022 and well into August.   Current date in repair is 2004/05. Posts have been updated : 1-39900

A quality assurance run is underway, to scan to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified/certified post is: 39900

We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

The author of a concept for a 17 person expedition to Mars has specifically requested participation by peers to help.

A proposal for an 8 member expedition is in review.

RobertDyck could use assistance of all kinds in development of the Large Ship proposal. There are three animation/drawing systems in play.
Fusion 360 is a version of commercial software by AutoDesk that is available for student non-commercial use. It requires a beefy computer.
Blender is a free animation package that includes drawing capability.

The Large Ship project may stimulate spinoff activities, such as a 3D Virtual Experience. Volunteers are needed. See Recruiting for details.

Large Ship has split into two versions. The original is a single rotating passenger vessel. The competitor is a counter rotating design.
Large Ship has also spawned a new topic dedicated to design and construction of an on-Earth Analog facility for living human beings.
Large Ship has also spawned a new topic dedicated to engineering design and construction on Earth of a flight ready prototype.
Large Ship has also spawned a topic dedicated to design and deployment of a Gravity Remediation facility for space travelers.

The My Hacienda topic is in need of 7,800 individuals to populate a virtual community to simulate self-sustainability on Mars

The subject of abundant energy supply for the population of Earth (and Mars in due time) is under discussion in the Nuclear Power is Safe topic.  It seems reasonable (to me at least) to suppose all fossil fuel power stations can be replaced with modular nuclear fission packages quite rapidly if the people of Earth decide that is a good idea.  It appears the leadership of China thinks that is a good idea for their nation.

A book was recommended for discussion: Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy by Olah, Goeppert and Prakash
Abundant energy from modular fission reactors is continuing to receive attention.

A book was recommended for discussion: "Plentiful Energy" (about fission reactors).

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership.  Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address.  If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to this email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Posts have been updated : 1-41100

A quality assurance run is underway, to scan to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified/certified post is: 41100

Posts have been updated : 1-42600

A quality assurance run is underway, to scan to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified/certified post is: 42600

We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

The author of a concept for a 17 person expedition to Mars has specifically requested participation by peers to help.

I do not remember if you are able to see the users email at the mod level.
If not I will work to port them and send them you way to prep an automated send out once we have the message format content.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

For SpaceNut .... nice to see we might be sending email to former members at some point.

Reminder ... The work we did with accounts (to convert spammers to prospective new members) included changing emails.

I can pull up a member's email if you provide the member's Forum Name.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

I should reset the ban on the real name user accounts but leave any notes so that we can see if they attempt to log into the existing user accounts.

Those other converted accounts we should target NSS members that would like them and get them chipping in with discussion.

Posts have been updated : 1-43800

A quality assurance run is underway, to scan to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified/certified post is: 43800

This is ** your ** forum, so what I'm about to say is purely advisory....

It seems to me that it might make sense (in this case) to stay with a positive confirmation by email.

As it is, old members are welcome to contact us by email. They have NOT done so.

To unban the accounts is to open them right back to attack by spammers.

Many (or at least a few) of the active members from 20 years ago will have left us permanently.

The ones I think are worth pursuing are those who were in college or just starting their careers 20 years ago.

I don't think we need more folks who are interested in commenting on the events of the day. We seem to have a generous and capable set of folks who enliven the forum with comments and links to active research and achievements.

The kind of person who ** I ** am looking for are those who have interests that blend well with the goals of the Mars Society, and who have the time and energy to make significant contributions to human progress.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

For SpaceNut re #595

You're certainly right.  I am recommending you stay the course, and encourage older members to apply for reinstatement using the new email system.

At one point, I got the impression you were thinking of unbanning older members and waiting to see if they ever log back in.

My recommendation would be to send them an email if you want them back, and let them apply via the email pathway.

We've been offering this service since Mars_B4_Moon came back on his own.  As you will recall, he complained about the registration system being closed off, but he figured out how to re-connect without our help.

As a result of his complaint, we set up the system we are offering now.

Any older member who finds their account locked is welcome to apply to become active again, using the email Portal.

We post a daily reminder of how that system works.  So far no one has applied.  But that could change if we send them email inviting them back.

For SpaceNut ....

We've been discussing the possibility you might want to send email to older members, at some point in the future.

This post is a reminder that we have nothing automated in place to accomplish that.  It will take at least a month to develop a script and whatever other changes to software to accomplish that.

When you do decide you want to try sending a test email to yourself, please include a 30 day delay in your planning.

There are nearly 8 billion people on Earth these days, and several billion have access to the Internet.  This forum is accessible to ** every ** Earth citizen with Internet access.  We ** know ** the site is of interest to spammers! Hopefully it is of interest to others who want to use their time more productively.

Posts have been updated : 1-45000

A quality assurance run is underway, to scan to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified/certified post is: 45000
