The next Zoom meeting(s) is/are scheduled for (Today) Sunday. We will be using the Professional Mars Society account.
Note: The Mars Society Zoom account is reserved for 7 PM Pacific Time on the Second Sunday of each month.

Time for project meeting: To be determined as needed
A special Zoom is in the works for Saturday February 5th, at 2 PM Houston time. This is intended to be a dress rehearsal for a presentation by GW Johnson, using the slides and notes recently published in the GW Johnson Postings topic. We would appreciate a (small) audience for feedback. We've requested someone from North Houston chapter and now have a confirmation. The rehearsal will provide an opportunity for details of how to present slides via the Zoom share to be worked out. In addition, the volunteer will have an opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Johnson in a small audience setting.
Time for later meeting: 1:00 UTC Monday <<== kbd512 is host for this event. This is an all-subjects open meeting.
Request: Please try to connect to the Zoom session shortly after it opens, as a courtesy to the host.
The first Zoom meeting for NewMars members was held Monday November 8th, 2021 at 1 AM UTC. It lasted for well over 4 hours.

We have 11,050 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through 18,344 are waiting for finishing touches. We have run out of Usernames that may be eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members. We are halfway through a campaign to repair posts that contain artifacts that prevent proper display. Scan of 77,000 posts out of 77,000 were completed and the end point was found. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in place. Code to perform updates is finished and tested. It is waiting for final approval.
Approval to proceed IS granted, the project will resume in December, 2021.
Equipment to be used for the update series was tested and found ready to begin work on December 1st. The process will last through July of 2022 and well into August. Posts 1-19800 have been updated. Current date in repair is 2003/09
A new schedule is underway, to scan to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified/certified post is: 3300
We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.
The author of a concept for a 17 person expedition to Mars has specifically requested participation by peers to help.
A proposal for an 8 member expedition is in review.
RobertDyck could use assistance of all kinds in development of the Large Ship proposal. There are three animation/drawing systems in play.
Fusion 360 is a version of commercial software by AutoDesk that is available for student non-commercial use. It requires a beefy computer.
Blender is a free animation package that includes drawing capability.
The Large Ship project may stimulate spinoff activities, such as a full scale greenhouse in LEO built to Large Ship specifications.
Large Ship has split into two versions. The original is a single rotating passenger vessel. The competitor is a counter rotating design.
The My Hacienda topic is in need of 7,800 individuals to populate a virtual community to simulate self-sustainability on Mars
The subject of abundant energy supply for the population of Earth (and Mars in due time) is under discussion in the Nuclear Power is Safe topic. It seems reasonable (to me at least) to suppose all fossil fuel power stations can be replaced with modular nuclear fission packages quite rapidly if the people of Earth decide that is a good idea. It appears the leadership of China thinks that is a good idea for their nation.
A book was recommended for discussion: Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy by Olah, Goeppert and Prakash
Abundant energy from modular fission reactors is continuing to receive attention.
A book was recommended for discussion: "Plentiful Energy" (about fission reactors).

Abundant energy from modular fission reactors is continuing to receive attention.
A book was recommended for discussion: "Plentiful Energy" (about fission reactors).

Recruiting High Value members for NewMars.com/forums, in association with the Mars Society

The author of a major book series took the time out of his busy schedule to reply to my inquiry about one of his earlier works.
I was astonished, and am (of course) most appreciative. He provided the item I needed, and (of course) pointed out that his latest edition (#10) might be a better choice, since the copy I'm studying is #6.
I took the opportunity to mention Large Ship as an ongoing project of this forum, as a part of the Mars Society association of activities.
It is remotely possible this distinguished person might pass the word along to someone who might be interested in helping.
If that were to happen, here is a top-of-my-head list of specializations we need:
1) 3D animation Virtual Reality model of Large Ship for engineering design (not for entertainment)
2) Engineering assistance ... we (humans) have never done this before and only have a vague idea how to proceed
3) Biological systems support - the Large Ship needs to keep passengers and crew in good health and in good spirits
4) Psychological support - The proposed living environment is unimaginable to most people alive in 2022
5) Architecture ... it is proposed to build two on-Earth models ... one for testing living conditions... the other to design subsystems.
6) Financial support ... the proposed models will cost millions of US dollars to build and to operate for extended periods.
7) Financial support ...the ship itself will cost more to build than the ISS, because it is much larger
8) Propulsion - advanced ... it is possible to send Large Ship to Mars with chemical propulsion, but nuclear propulsion is better
That list is enough for now ... plenty of other specializations are needed.

Some time will elapse before we humans are ready to confront the building of real Mars colonization ships. A few years? Many years? Who knows? That's not the point.
The real point is to work now on the more advanced propulsion schemes between now and then, so that one (or more) of these concepts might really be "ready to apply" at the appropriate time. Colonization missions are NOT exploration missions! Do not be fooled by any propaganda otherwise.
Chemical simply cannot do the colonization job adequately. Not at 8 tons propellant for every dead-head ton of payload shipped 2-ways (half at Earth, the other half at Mars). Neither can solid core nuclear thermal. Not at 4 tons propellant for every dead-head ton shipped 2-ways (all supplied at Earth). If you haven't been able to accept that outcome, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you. Or some beachfront property in Atlantis. Beautiful ocean view, 1200 feet, straight up.
Some scaled-up form of electric propulsion might serve well enough in the nearer term. What I identified for the longer term was that one or another of the gas core nuclear thermal concepts might work, and also possibly the nuclear explosion propulsion concept, given a workable solution to EMP effects.
As with partial-gee spin gravity effects, it is WAY FAR PAST TIME to simply get on with this kind of work. This is the kind of crap that NASA (and its predecessor NACA) was originally created for. Yet nobody has ever actually done anything truly substantive toward either issue.

The EMP effects of a fission detonation are the result of gamma rays interacting with upper atmosphere producing free electrons and then free electrons getting caught up in the Earth's magnetic field. The resulting electric field gradients cause power surges, especially in long exposed power lines. Surge protection trips out breakers, which must then be manually reset.
Smaller fission pulse units produce proportionately smaller EM spikes. Fusion bombs tend to release more neutron radiation but less direct gamma. So EM pulse effects are less pronounced. The concept I am presently working on uses milligrams of fissile material to produce a hot spot at the centre of an imploding lithium deuterium fuel pellet. EMP effects will be negligible, as will fallout. A bigger issue, which is far more difficult to solve, is that a drive like this will pump the Earth's Van Allen belts with high energy plasma radiation. This may damage satellites and imperil any humans in low orbit. The only solution would be to surround a pulse unit with inert material that reduces the average energy of the propellant ions. Unfortunately, that also dilutes ISP. Any decent performing space drive is a weapon of mass destruction in the wrong hands.

For GW Johnson re Post #618 ... this is an important contribution, and it needs to live in an appropriate topic
For Calliban re #619 ... this is an important contribution, and it needs to live with #618 in an appropriate topic
For SpaceNut ... this topic is about recruiting new personnel to join NewMars and contribute to achievement
Please evaluate the possible topics where 618 and 619 would fit. I will move them when you have made a decision.

For GW Johnson ... I am hoping you are acquainted with folks who can help with the recruiting campaign. Please invite such folks to think about candidates who might be both willing and able to make a contribution.
for Calliban ... the same is true for you, with the qualification that your circle of friends may have different interests than those of GW Johnson. Please consider inviting such folks to assist with the recruiting effort.
The set of ideas flowing from Large Ship Prime ** should ** stimulate productive activity by thousands of people, just as the Great Space Race of the 1960's caused competitive and productive effort by many thousands of people in the United States (and it's allies) and in the Soviet Union.

It appears the leadership of China thinks that is a good idea for their nation.

This is for SpaceNut primarily, but it concerns everyone ....
Under your leadership, starting with the decision to cut off and to clean out the spammers, I think I am seeing tiny signs the forum is moving ever so slightly toward accomplishing something in the real-Universe. The letters about an Engineering Lander for Mars, and an On-Orbit Refueling System are out the real world. They would not have been discarded, but they are probably languishing on a shelf somewhere. They will have made an impression on at least one person, and with any luck more than one.
Those letters are like bottles tossed into the ocean. They may be retrieved and used some day, or they may not. However, the knowledge and wisdom they reflect are NOT constrained in any way, and both are available to be delivered to new audiences.
Meanwhile, we have the Large Ship initiative of RobertDyck showing signs of life, and the work of Calliban on a (possible) hybrid fission/fusion/laser propulsion system is ongoing. Both of these activities are on the bleeding edge of what may be possible.
Unfortunately for the pace of progress, our efforts to bring new (contributing) members into the forum have not yet produced measurable results. We have new members all right, but they are ALL focused intently on their careers. We can hope that at some point they may decide to pitch a morsel into the stew here, but for now I'm assuming we won't see them for a while.
Not too long ago, you wrote a suggestion/idea/concept on one of your posts, that we might consider sending email to older members who we are finding as we update the posts from 20 years ago. I'd like to try to encourage you to do two things to get the process started.
WBA can be adapted to send email to former active members.
What would be needed is (a) a brief letter from you to the former members and (b) a list of ID's of people you want to ping.
The ** best ** way to do this is to send a letter to yourself.
If you compose a letter, and identify yourself as the intended recipient, then the ball is entirely in my court to make it happen.
I ** think ** WBA can perform this mission as is, but if updates are necessary, then I am willing to make them.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects. We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions. We don't need more folks in that specialty. We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
