Treatment of Women

For SpaceNut .... there did not appear to be a topic appropriate to the opening post ...

The link below is about decline of population in Russia ... however, it seems to me the principles at work in this situation apply to all human cultures where males have been dominant for centuries if not millennia.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-putin-de … 24696.html

“My husband would like to have more children but I definitely don’t want to be dependent on him financially and lose my professional activity... I just see no point,” Poshenko told The Daily Beast. “It is strange that authorities expect women to have two or three children, to exchange their own personal development for the state’s national goals.”

Domestic violence is reported (according to the article) to be a significant problem in Russia.

Women are choosing not to support a culture that demeans women, by not supporting the culture.

Re: Treatment of Women

I believe Mars will be a strange place not just a unique place with thin air and dust storms covering the planet, its soils and chemicals unique, in the color of its sky, it is possible Mars will be unique and alien when it comes to the 'Rights of Women'. It could also be an odd place in the eyes of Mars law and Human Rights for the Male sex, the right of the animal, the right of the AI machien robot, the Married man and the Baby and Child. Mars could have a form of Corporate law, Global Imperial Law and a mix of active duty Women in the military law and it may even have elements of the Rightwing or Marxist Socialism. I had ideas on this recently I went deep in thought, I guess speculative day dreaming stuff for a few mins a few days back and some ideas came to me, I will hopefully have time to write up a longer posts perhaps very relevant to this topic and reference our own Earth's history and exploration.

Some interesting moments in US history took look at might be the 14th which addresses citizenship rights and equal protection under the law and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves. Before the year 1776, women voted in several of the colonies in what would become the United States, but by 1807 every state constitution had denied women even limited suffrage. and another to look at is the 'XIX' the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution part of the worldwide movement towards women's suffrage and part of the wider women's rights movement.

Russia and the older gobal vision of the scifi Cosmonaut on the planets? I don't think the scifi visions of a USSR in Space will ever be, it's hard to predict our future sometimes scifi gets it correct other times not. Russia does have great rokcets and it did some amazing space feats, its this werid mix of European West mixed with Asian East I guess I don't fully understand them. So why did Communism historically grow so much there, why do they have very little history with Western style democracy, why is there corruption, an oligarchy, why are there powerful Mafias and  why Violence Is Becoming the Norm in Russia? Long Winters, the culture of Alcoholism, Poverty and Drug Addictions probably contribute to break down of family. The Russian culture historically has seen Dictator and Tsar for many years, Stalin could have been one of the worst killing even more than Hitler including murdering his own Russian people, the turbulent 1990s in Russia are easily eclipsed by the violence of the Middle East, Latin America and Africa, the Russia chaos maybe it is not as bad as people say and homicide rates are lower when witnessed by Venezuela, Africa or the Middle East and several other Latin American countries?

Crime and rights on other planets?
Even if Mars is harsh for people I do not believe it will ever be as cruel a dn backwards as Saudi or the Middle East where women get stoned to death, some of the condemned to death were traditionally executed by gunfire, in more recent years they have routinely been beheaded or Iran with its acid attacks in the Iranian city of Isfahan or Afghanistan where women are getting attacked today.

Re: Treatment of Women

It will be a long while before Mars can afford to not have it's womenfolk be highly educated... the bigger problem re. having children is most likely going to be ensuring women can have the children they want to have, not trying to get them to have more than they want (actual fertility rates lag significantly behind desired fertility in the West, and the problem seems to be biggest amongst the well educated -- women want to have 2-3 kids, but don't).
