Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/10/26 Thursday <<-- Days of the week are ** NOT in ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in December on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/11/19 Friday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 5 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 150 degrees

Solar Longitude: 129.2 Sol Number: 277  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      128.7 Previous Sol:276

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion occurred on Sol 152 at 71 degrees Ls.
Aphelion occurred near 70 degrees Ls on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Note#3: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   237,590,135 km [23.1 km/s] Difference is -152222 <= 6919 km/hour at 6.0 on 11/19 (time:6:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   237,742,357 km [23.1 km/s] Difference is -160980 <= 6879 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/18 (time:8:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   237,903,337 km [23.1 km/s] Difference is -161719 <= 6853 km/hour at 8.6 on 11/17 (time:8:36)

Observation: The sky view is ** filled ** with objects and very few have been recorded and given identification by humans or their robot assistants
And! ** All ** the location assignments are from the perspective of Earth.  The entire catalog needs to be adjusted when inter-stellar travel begins
The work that lies ahead for the astronomical community is daunting - there is work ahead for centuries

Next up: Galaxy PGC 906607 RA 14h 45m 28.5s below path Day 0 about 20 hours ahead
PGC 912126 above PGC 910684 below Day 0 about 15 hours ahead - Day 1 about 8 hours behind

As a general observation ... In recent days I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.
The site: theskylive.com does a terrific job of matching the view from Earth towards Mars, against a background of actual astronomical plates.
I wish there were a way (or rather, I wish I ** knew ** about a way that may exist) to enlarge the view until the entire galaxy is in view.
Update 2021/07/30 I wrote to an astronomer to ask if there might be a web site with a view showing the galaxy in context of a given view.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending noticeably down and East as seen from Earth
In recent days, the curve has been slowly bending down through horizontal.

Earth Distance 2021/11/19 378,417,919 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/18 378,916,799 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/17 379,415,797 (decrease)

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.

Light travel in one second is (about) 300,000 kilometers. The distance covered in one minute is about 18,000,000 kilometers.
Light travel time today is between 20 and 21 minutes. Communications delay would be 40+ minutes round trip. [20:360,000,000][21:390,000,000]

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.  Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement continues.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 277 is in Month 10 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month  10 extends from Sol 252 through 279. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 09
Direct path to source: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 57#p154257
Sol 277 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. <<== The current year on Mars is 36
Per www.planetary.org this occurred February 7, 2021 (on Earth). The new Mars Year is 36.

The next Skip Day will occur in December (estimate: 15th) on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may not be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.
The next cycle began on the first Sol of the period of coincidence. The  alignment of weekdays interval is in the range: (310 - 337)
Use Search Term Alignment to find the first day of a period of coincidence.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/11/02 Monday <<-- Days of the week are ** NOT in ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in December on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/11/23 Tuesday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 5 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 150 degrees

Solar Longitude: 131.1 Sol Number: 281  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      130.6 Previous Sol:280

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   236,891,380 km [23.2 km/s] Difference is -180824 <= 7063 km/hour at 9.7 on 11/23 (time:9:42)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   237,072,204 km [23.2 km/s] Difference is -159508 <= 7027 km/hour at 8.1 on 11/22 (time:8:06)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   237,231,712 km [23.2 km/s] Difference is -177514 <= 6988 km/hour at 9.4 on 11/21 (time:9:24)

Next up: Pair: Above: TYC 6155-558-1 Mg11.37 Below: TYC 6155-719-1 Mg11.53 Day 0 about 10 hours ahead
HIP 72784 Magnitude 8.15 Day 0 below path and about 12 hours ahead - Day 1 about 14 hours behind

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.

Earth Distance 2021/11/23 376,203,481 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/22 376,775,944 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/21 377,303,520 (decrease)

Month  11 extends from Sol 280 through 307. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 09
Direct path to source: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 57#p154257

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 284 is in Month 11 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month  11 extends from Sol 280 through 307. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 09

Sol 284 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/11/06 Friday <<-- Days of the week are ** NOT in ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in December on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/11/27 Saturday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 5 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 150 degrees

Solar Longitude: 133.1 Sol Number: 285  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      132.6 Previous Sol:284

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   236,210,380 km [23.3 km/s] Difference is -131015 <= 7199 km/hour at 9.0 on 11/27 (time:9:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   236,341,395 km [23.3 km/s] Difference is -224274 <= 7165 km/hour at 14.8 on 11/26 (time:14:48)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   236,565,669 km [23.2 km/s] Difference is -171037 <= 7127 km/hour at 7.5 on 11/25 (time:7:30)

Next up: a pair of stars: TYC 6173-7-1 Mg 10.17 TYC 6173-18-1 Mg 10.31 in path Day 0 about 15 hours ahead
Galaxy PGC 887622 RA 15h 04m 15.5s below path and 10 hours ahead on Day 0 - Day 1 about 8 hours behind

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.

Earth Distance 2021/11/27 373,962,962 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/26 374,404,175 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/25 375,115,282 (decrease)

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Business Opportunity: Publish Mars Business Calendar

This topic has been showing the value of the Business Calendar for Mars, developed with key suggestions from RobertDyck.

It is a distinct pleasure to work with this design.  The days of the week are ** always ** falling on exactly the same days of the month, Sol after Sol.

There are NO leap years or other shenanigans with inevitable departure of the business calendar from the astronomical calendar, because New Year's Eve is adjusted in length so that at midnight, the two calendars are back in alignment to the nanosecond.

There are four adjustment Sols, each on the last Friday of each Quarter.

A printed calendar would have images of Mars terrain or other suitable subjects.  It would have 24 months (of course), and it would include the Earth calendar in fine print to insure readers can coordinate between the two calendars.

There may be a market on Earth for a calendar along these lines.

We have at least one full Martial year of calendar postings saved in this topic to study, and the plan for the structure of the calendar is saved in RobertDyck's Holidays topic.

The first post in the current series is recorded on: 2019-03-17 14:37:11  - today is 2021-11-29 [Count of Earth days: 988]

I would be happy to work with an entrepreneur who would be willing to make the investments needed to launch a trial version of a print calendar.

This is the season when Earth residents restock their Earth calendars.  It is right in the middle of the Mars year, but that is not a problem, because the Earth residents would be using the Earth calendar embedded within the Mars one anyway.

Update at 13:03 local time:

A local user group published the announcement below for December workshops...

DECEMBER
WEDNESDAY WORKSHOPS

December 1
Electronic Holiday Greeting Cards
Not Your Parent’s PowerPoint

December 8
Make Your Own 2022 Photo Calendar at Home

I'll try to attend the one on December 8th, to see if whatever solution is offered might be adapted to make a Mars Business Calendar.

While creating a printed calendar for commercial distribution is ** possible ** it is not likely to occur, but if a digital calendar is feasible, it ** might ** be achievable by a single person, or perhaps a small team.

Observation: The sky view is ** filled ** with objects and very few have been recorded and given identification by humans or their robot assistants
And! ** All ** the location assignments are from the perspective of Earth.  The entire catalog needs to be adjusted when inter-stellar travel begins

Next up: a lonely galaxy direct in the path: PGC 875671 RA 15h 15m 33.1s Day 0 about 15 hours ahead.

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.

Earth Distance 2021/11/30 372,198,555 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/29 372,797,540 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/11/28 373,383,159 (decrease)

Sol 288 is Monday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

It's been a number of years since I've had to submit a resume, and in any case, all that was before the modern age of online submissions.

I'm interested in finding a partner to help to promote the Mars Business Calendar we've been testing here.

The company shown in the link below appears to be located in Australia.  It has NO intake port for contacts, so I tried the job application page, which at least allows for input.  However, nothing I submitted to the resume port was accepted.  If someone in the forum has a  clue what they might be looking for, I'd appreciate any insights!

https://jobs.lever.co/canva

I've been testing a Mars business calendar for the past 900+ Sols ... I think the calendar has stood up pretty well, and hope that it might be of interest to Earth customers.  A calendar for Earth customers should (of course) include the Earth calendar in fine print, while the Mars one is in normal print. I'm looking  for ways to develop this calendar for fund raising for the Mars Society.  Anyone in your staff is welcome to look at the daily calendar posting on the forum, and to contact me via the NewMarsMember portal if there is any interest in a collaboration. tahanson43206 (th)

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Ubuntu provides a large library of free software.  Today it occurred to me to look at the Calendar offering.  The About dropdown shows authors and artists, so I decided to write them to see if anyone in the group might be interested in building a free ubuntu Mars Calendar offering.  There are many requirements for a software offering to be accepted by the Ubuntu managers, so I would not even consider such an ambitious idea if the Earth Calendar were not already present.

The Mars Society has a number of subgroups and many activities.

I am a moderator (Junior Grade) in the NewMars.com/forums.

The forum has been testing a concept for a business calendar for Mars over 990+ Sols, and I am cautiously optimistic that it would serve the business community well if it were adopted.

This message is to ask if anyone in your group would be interested in implementing the concept for a version for Ubuntu.

Long term, I would be interested in seeing this concept turn into a (very modest) source of income for Ubuntu and the Mars Society, if we can find a market for a print version featuring some of the beautiful Mars-scapes that NASA has transmitted back from Mars, and from satellites in orbit around Mars.

The design of the Mars Business calendar is described in detail in Post #82 of the Holidays topic at NewMars.com/forums.

You can see the daily Calendar posting refreshed each morning at NewMars.com/forums.

Input to the calendar comes from two web sites.  Both are acknowledged in the daily calendar update.

If anyone is interested in working on this project, please read Post #2 of the Recruiting topic.

Sol 291 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/11/13 Friday <<-- Days of the week are ** NOT in ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in December on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/12/04 Saturday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 5 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 150 degrees

Solar Longitude: 136.5 Sol Number: 292  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      136.0 Previous Sol:291

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   234,987,295 km [23.4 km/s] Difference is -182198 <= 7406 km/hour at 8.1 on 12/04 (time:806)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   235,169,493 km [23.4 km/s] Difference is -162422 <= 7383 km/hour at 7.5 on 12/03 (time:7:30)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   235,331,915 km [23.4 km/s] Difference is -182258 <= 7349 km/hour at 9.5 on 12/02 (time:9:30)

Next up: 3 TYC's and a mini-Boomer: HIP 75532 Magnitude 7.72 above path Day 0 about 8 hours ahead
Above TYC 6175-1244 Below TYC 6175-1077-1 Day 0 about 7 hours ahead - Day 1 near edge of view on right - about 18 hours past

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.

Earth Distance 2021/12/04 369,747,746 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/12/03 370,371,371 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/12/02 370,938,701 (decrease)

Sol 295 is in Month 11 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month  11 extends from Sol 280 through 307. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 09

Sol 295 is Monday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/11/17 Tuesday <<-- Days of the week are ** NOT in ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in December on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/12/08 Wednesday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 5 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 150 degrees

Solar Longitude: 138.5 Sol Number: 296  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      138.0 Previous Sol:295

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   234,269,953 km [23.5 km/s] Difference is -176794 <= 7523 km/hour at 8.0 on 12/08 (time:8:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   234,446,747 km [23.4 km/s] Difference is -170137 <= 7495 km/hour at 8.5 on 12/07 (time:8:30)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   234,616,884 km [23.4 km/s] Difference is -188937 <= 7468 km/hour at 9.8 on 12/06 (time:9:48)

Next up: Y shape: Galaxy PGC 857743 RA 15h 38m 03.7s top left - TYC 6193-949-1, TYC 6193-1229-1, TYC 6193-1258-1 about 15 hours ahead Day 0
TYC 6192-95-1 Mg 11.05 just below path Day 0 about 20 hours ahead - Day 1 about 6 hours past Mars

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.

Earth Distance 2021/12/08 367,181,973 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/12/07 367,803,306 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/12/06 368,420,522 (decrease)

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.
